De La Hoya: Canelo vs. McGregor at 160 makes sense

de-la-hoya873

By Dan Ambrose: After saying for ages that Saul Canelo Alvarez is a 154lb fighter, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has suddenly changed his tune when it comes to interest in a fight between Canelo and UFC star Conor McGregor. De La Hoya says he would love to make a fight between Canelo and McGregor at 160. Some would say that De La Hoya will do anything to have Canelo duck Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, even matching him against McGregor do dodge the fight. A fight between Canelo and McGregor would make a lot of money, but it’s not likely to happen.

De La Hoya says he would like to speak with McGregor and potentially promote him if he were interested in a boxing career. McGregor is under contract with the UFC, and it’s unclear whether that would forbid him from fighting or taking part in any other sport while he’s with the UFC. As far as De La Hoya is concerned, the only fight that makes sense to him is a match between McGregor and Canelo.

McGregor says he’d be looking to KO Mayweather

mcgregor4

By Eric Baldwin: UFC fighter Conor McGregor just won’t shut-up about his interest in fighting 39-year-old retired former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. for some reason. Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions made it perfectly clear last week that there’s not going to be a fight between Mayweather and McGregor, because Mayweather is happy and retired.

That doesn’t seem to be sinking in with the 28-year-old McGregor, who continues to talk about wanting to fight Mayweather. McGregor picked up a boxing license in California last week. McGregor says that if he fought Mayweather that he’d be looking to knock him out. What McGregor doesn’t say is that he would likely need to have permission from the UFC before he could fight Mayweather.

Malignaggi wants to teach McGregor a lesson

malignaggi7

By Scott Gilfoid: If former two division world champion Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi (36-7, 7 KOs) gets his way, he’s going to be the one to teach UFC star Conor McGregor a lesson if he chooses to fight inside of a boxing ring rather than inside a cage.

The 28-year-old McGregor recently picked up a boxing license to fight in California, and he’s very interested in fighting retired superstar boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he comes out of retirement.

Ellberbe says Mayweather vs. McGregor isn’t happening

mcgregor4

By Allan Fox: Leonard Ellberbe of Mayweather Promotions says there’s no chance of a fight taking place between UFC star Conor McGregor and the retired boxing start Floyd Mayweather Jr. The 28-year-old McGregor made news this week by getting his boxing license to fight in the sport in California. However, Ellerbe sees it as a strategy for McGregor to expand his fan base by him name dropping Mayweather’s name frequently, and putting it out three that he’s ready to fight him.

By McGregor constantly saying stuff like that, boxing fans will likely discover him and start paying attention to his fights in the MMA. Ellberbe doesn’t think the UFC management honchos will ever give McGregor permission to compete in boxing, because it would likely end badly for him. McGregor is under constant with the UFC, and he would need their permission for him to fight in another sport like boxing.

McGregor still interested in Mayweather fight

degale-jack-mayweather-gervonta-11

By Allan Fox: UFC star Conor McGregor is still very much interested in facing former six-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match when/if he returns to the ring in the near future. McGregor and Mayweather would need to work out the money split for the fight to become a reality.

The 28-year-old McGregor reportedly wants $100 million for the Mayweather fight, which might be a realistic number if the fight creates the kind of interest that the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight created last year in their ‘Fight of the Century’ in May 2015. For the Mayweather-McGregor fight to bring in that many fans, it would require a lot of boxing fans to purchase the fight. They would have to believe that it was a fair fight in which McGregor had a chance of winning.

Ward says Conor McGregor shouldn’t face Mayweather in boxing match

Floyd Mayweather

By Eric Baldwin: It’s not a good idea for UFC star Conor McGregor to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match, says former super middleweight champion Andre Ward. He thinks the 28-year-old McGregor should forget about that. Ward would like to see a fight between Mayweather and McGregor. However, he suspects that McGregor is just using Mayweather’s name to get attention to himself by getting fans from both sports interested in him.

By name dropping Mayweather’s name, McGregor is making himself known to fans outside of the MMA sports by entering into the boxing realm. Hopefully, McGregor doesn’t start name dropping athletes from football, tennis and golf, because it really would be a joke by then.

McGregor warns Mayweather about name dropping

floyd

By Allan Fox: UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor says he’s still interested in fighting former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match under the set of rules of the sport. However, McGregor says Mayweather doesn’t have his money, and he wants him to stop name dropping his name all the time.

McGregor says that if Mayweather doesn’t stop talking about him, then he’s going to show up at his front door. McGregor doesn’t say what he’s going to do when he shows up at Mayweather’s house. He would obviously need to get through all of Mayweather’s huge security personnel before he could get to the “Money” man, who is quick on his feet and fast of hand.

McGregor said to Fighthype.com this about a fight against Mayweather:

Dana White: Mayweather is going to get kicked and elbowed by McGregor

mayweatherr63

By Allan Fox: UFC president Dana White says that he doubts the fight between UFC star Conor McGregor and boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. will ever take place between them. First of all, White says that the 28-year-old McGregor is under contract with him and his UFC organization.

Secondly, if Mayweather does want to fight McGregor, it would need to take place under MMA rules instead of boxing rules, which means that Mayweather would be dealing with being kicked and elbowed by McGregor in the fight. White says that would be for starters. He doesn’t say whether there would be grappling and submission holds allowed in the fight.

If that were the case, it would be impossible for the two fighters to face each other, considering it would take years for Mayweather to learn how to wrestle and use the submission holds that MMA fighters use in their contests. Mayweather is 39-years-old, and he doesn’t have years to learn how to wrestle, kick, and elbow like MMA fighters.

Mayweather gives up on Conor McGregor fight

floyd883

By Patrick McHugh: Former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has officially given up on the idea of fighting UFC star Conor McGregor. The 39-year-old Mayweather says he attempted to put the fight together but he couldn’t do it. Why exactly the fight couldn’t get made is unclear, but it might be due to the money.

Putting Mayweather and McGregor together in the ring would have been poison anyway. McGregor would be the equivalent of a novice, and it would have ended badly. If were an exhibition bout for the fans to see, it wouldn’t have been bad. But for fans to have to buy the fight on PPV, it would have been a real negative for the sport.

Mayweather said that if he came back, he would need to get a nine-figure payday. Getting that kind of money would be hard enough, because it would require a great opponent for the boxing ring, and a network willing to give Mayweather a lot of money.
