Is it too soon to say 2017 will be a great year for boxing?

Image: Is it too soon to say 2017 will be a great year for boxing?

By Juan Rodriguez: After having a disappointing and forgettable 2016, 2017 is looking bright for boxing fans. The lack of quality match-ups, an abundance of one-sided fights and many inactive champions left fight fans both upset and frustrated. Throw in dragging negotiations of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and you’ll be able to see how bad of a year 2016 was for boxing.

A month and a week into 2017, fans are already excited and eager for the fights that have already passed and are signed for. In January alone fans were treated to fights between fighters at the top of their weight class such as James DeGale v. Badou Jack, Carl Frampton v. Leo Santa Cruz 2 and Dejan Zlaticanin v. Mikey Garcia. Fans were also treated to fights were they saw prospects turn into legitimate champions in shocking fashion such as when Gervonta Davis dethroned Jose Pedraza by seventh-round TKO.

Image: Canelo says Chavez fight is now personal for him

By Dan Ambrose: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) has succeeded in upsetting former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) to the point where it’s now deeply personal for him, and he says he’s looking forward to getting him in the ring on May 6 to let his fists do the talking.

Canelo-Chavez Jr. are fighting at a catch-weight of 164 ½ pounds on HBO pay-per-view on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo on May 6 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since the fight was signed, Chavez Jr. has given his thoughts on Canelo, and apparently he’s gotten on the nerves of the 26-year-old Golden Boy Promotions fighter.

Chavez Jr. looking thin already for Canelo fight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzWiLs6y-7A

By Eric Baldwin: For the boxing fans worried about Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. having problems making the 164 ½ pound catch-weight limit for his May 6 fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez, you can rest assured because he’s already looking in great shape.

Chavez Jr. hasn’t been training for that long, but already looks thin and in superb shape. With three months to go before his fight against Canelo on May 6, the only concern is that Chavez Jr. doesn’t overdo it during training camp for the fight. He doesn’t need to over-train for the fight, because that would be self-defeating on his part.

Jacobs has the power to hurt Golovkin says Quigley

Image: Jacobs has the power to hurt Golovkin says Quigley

By Jeff Aranow: Unbeaten middleweight contender Jason Quigley (12-0, 10 KOs) is predicting that IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC 160lb champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will have a lot of problems in his fight next month against WBA ‘regular’ champion Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) on March 18 on HBO pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Quigley sees Jacobs’ punching power and boxing skills as being a problem for Golovkin, especially early on in the fight. Quigley, 25, still believes that Golovkin will eventually be too strong for Jacobs and will wear him down later in the fight, but it depends on how the early rounds play out.

Marquez still gives Canelo the advantage over Chavez

Image: Marquez still gives Canelo the advantage over Chavez

By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez gives Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) a slightly better chance against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) now that he’s being trained by Nacho Beristain, but he still sees the 26-year-old Canelo as having the advantage in the fight.

Marquez feels that there’s only so much a great trainer can do for a fighter that doesn’t train constantly. Marquez sees the change that someone like Beristain making in Chavez Jr’s style as something that will take time, and they only have this training camp to get ready for the huge fight against Canelo on May 6 on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. There’s not enough time.

Chavez Jr. has great trainer for Canelo fight

Image: Chavez Jr. has great trainer for Canelo fight

By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be trained by legendary trainer Nacho Beristain for his Mexican rivalry against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) for their fight on May 6 on Cinco de Mayo on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It’s going to be Beristain’s job to not only get Chavez Jr. ready for the actual fight itself, but also to help him whittle his weight down to the 164.5lb for the catch-weight for the fight. As most boxing fans already know, Chavez Jr. has had problems making the 168lb limit ever since he moved up to the super middleweight division in 2013 after campaigning at middleweight for many years.

Loeffler says Golovkin could fight Canelo or Chavez Jr.

Image: Loeffler says Golovkin could fight Canelo or Chavez Jr.

By Jeff Aranow: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions not only views Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as a possible opponent for his fighter IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin for September, but also Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as an option. As far as Loeffler is concerned, the winner of the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight on May 6 will be the possible option for Golovkin in September.

It’s not just Canelo that Loeffler has his eyes on. It’s Chavez Jr. as well. Loeffler also says that if Golovkin wins his fight against Daniel Jacobs on March 18 and then beats the Canelo-Chavez Jr. winner later on this year, then a fight against Miguel Cotto could be an option for December.

Canelo will be allowed to keep WBO 154lb for Chavez Jr. fight

Image: Canelo will be allowed to keep WBO 154lb for Chavez Jr. fight

By Dan Ambrose: The WBO is reportedly going to allow Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) to keep his WBO junior middleweight title while he moves up to super middleweight to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) for their catch-weight fight at 164 ½ pounds on May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to RingTV.com, Canelo will need to make a decision 10 days after the Chavez Jr. fight if he plans on keeping the WBO junior middleweight title or give it up. It would seem fairly obvious that Canelo will be giving up the WBO 154lb title, because he’s supposedly going to be fighting middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September.

Why Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. is the Fight of the Year

Image: Why Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. is the Fight of the Year

By Bob Smith: There are many solid to excellent fights coming up this year, thankfully – Danny Garcia vs. Keith Thurman, Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs, Wladimir Klitschko vs. Anthony Joshua, (likely) Sergeyv Kovalev vs. Andre Ward II, and so forth.  Each of these are or will be excellent fights.  But I dismiss as not serious the criticisms of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Julio Chavez Jr. as only a “money fight”.

On the contrary, I think that this will be one of the biggest fights, if not the biggest fight of each of their respective careers, and will be very competitive and will be one of the best fights of 2017.
