CANELO TO BECOME YOUNGEST A-SIDE FIGHTER IN HISTORY TO DRAW ONE MILLION PAY-PER-VIEW BUYS
LOS ANGELES (May 18, 2017) – The Canelo Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend will generate more than one million buys on HBO Pay-Per-View, locking in Canelo’s status as the brightest light in boxing, Golden Boy Promotions announced today.
By Jeff Aranow: Trainer Nacho Beristain contradicts what Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been saying about him not eating in the last 2 weeks before his fight last Saturday night against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Beristain says he saw Chavez Jr. in in process of making the 164 ½ pound catchweight for the fight.
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions really did a good job of picking out Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s last opponent Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight their star fighter last Saturday night, but they also picked out a guy that was BADLY overweight and much too heavy to melt off the pounds to get down to the strict 164 ½ pound catchweight for their fight on May 6. Chavez Jr. says he ate very little in the last 2 weeks before the Canelo fight so that he could get down to the 164.5 pound catchweight.

Chavez Jr. fought like he was just there to survive against Canelo instead of there to win. Chavez Sr. tried to encourage the 30-year-old Chavez Jr. to let his hands go and give him more punches per round, but he couldn’t or wouldn’t do it against Canelo.

According to Dan Rafael, he’s hearing from a source the Canelo vs. Golovkin fight will bring in a minimum of 1 million buys on HBO PPV. This is great news for boxing because it means that Canelo’s next fight against Gennady “GGG Golovkin on September 16 will bring in MONSTROUS numbers on HBO PPV.

It was never going to be a real rivalry though, because Chavez Jr. is not tier fighter in 2017. The World Boxing Council has Chavez Jr. rated in their top 15 at super middleweight, but he clearly is no longer a top fighter.
