Canelo Alvarez and the Mexican consumer power in boxing

alvarez343By By Hector Gonzalez: Canelo Alvarez dropped out of the Mayweather vs Guerrero card after Mayweather refused to sign an agreement that Mayweather and Alvarez would fight in September during Mexican Independence day if it is that both fighters are to win their designated matches on Cinco de Mayo.

Canelo than drops out of the card and reschedules his bout with Austin Trout to April 20th stating that he is not going to he help Mayweather sell PPV sales if Mayweather is not helping him. All I could say is good for him. My support for Canelo Alvarez’s decision is not necessarily based on skill or accomplishments in the ring, but more importantly, it’s based on consumer power and in the case of Canelo Alvarez and the Mexican boxing community they have much clout. Enough so that Canelo and other Mexican fighters should be dictating more of their terms.

Sulaiman: Canelo-Trout winner has 15 days to decide which belt to keep

alvarez56By Dan Ambrose: World Boxing Council president Jose Sulaiman says the winner of the proposed May 4th unification fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) has only 15 days to decide which belt they’ll be keeping because the WBC doesn’t allow their champions to hold more than one belt at a title.

The one exemption they’ve made recently is WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, but he’s going to be forced to give up one of those belts after his next fight against Zab Judah, Sulaiman says.

Schaefer saying Canelo-Trout still isn’t a done deal

alvarez4By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is saying the May 4th unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA 154 lb. champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) still isn’t a done deal, according to Dan Rafael.

However, the fact that Canelo is tweeting that the fight is happening on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las, Nevada, is good enough for me to know that it WILL be happening.

It’s unclear what loose ends Schaefer still has to tie up in order for the Canelo-Trout to be official, but it can’t be that big of a deal for Canelo to already be letting the cat out of the bag by leaking the news ahead of Schaefer and Golden Boy.

Mayweather-Guerrero & Canelo-Trout expected to be announced within days for 5/4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

mayweather34545By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz is reporting that they are on the verge of announcing the May 4th fight card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy offered Canelo other opponents besides Trout, but Canelo insisted on facing the tougher Trout.

The announcement for the card is days away. They obviously have to do this as soon as possible because it’s already mid-February, and if they want this to be a huge pay per view card then they’re going to have to start marketing it soon as they can.
