De La Hoya: Canelo can prove he’s the real deal by beating Trout

SanAntonio_0U9C2206_send(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions says his fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) has the chance to show the world that he’s not just a fighter that’s built up from hype, but is the real thing by beating WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) in their unification match next month on April 20th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

De La Hoya said “This is an opportunity for Canelo to show everyone in boxing that he is the real deal…we don’t know who is going to win.”

True it is a chance for the red-haired Canelo to prove that he belongs at the top not because of how popular he is due to his Mexican fans, but rather because of what he actually does in the ring. If Canelo can beat Trout convincingly without controversy, then he belongs among the very best at 154.

Until then, you have to look at Canelo with a lot of doubt and suspicion due to the incredibly soft matchmaking that De La Hoya and Golden Boy has done for the 22-year-old Canelo over the years. Sadly, Canelo’s toughest fight of his career came against a shot 41-year-old Shane Mosley, and Canelo looked terrible in that fight.

Canelo-Trout, Mayweather-Guerrero, Donaire-Rigondeaux preview

SanAntonio_0U9C1440_send(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dominic Sauboorah: We are in for a treat this year with the fights being displayed and here they are:

Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux: This fight is a real tough one to call. You’ve got one of the best pound for pound fighters in Nonito Donaire, defending his WBO strap against arguably the best amateur boxer ever in Guillermo Rigondeaux, defending his WBA strap. Donaire will have the obvious size advantage; however Rigondeaux is a tricky customer with phenomenal defensive skills. He’s also a south paw; therefore Donaire may find it hard to land his punches against the slick Cuban. Nevertheless this fight is a genuine pick ‘em and a real good match up put together by Bob Arum. Both have speed, athleticism and power, should be a real good fight.

Canelo-Trout gate is already $800,000 for April 20th fight

canelo1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: The April 20th unification fight between WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) promises to be one of biggest boxing events of the year for 2013 when the two fighters face off at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

According to Steve Kim, the gate for the Canelo-Trout fight is already $800,000 and growing with a little over a month to go before the two fighters step inside the ring on April 20th in Texas.

No doubt the huge ticket sales are fueled in part by the low cost $10 tickets that Canelo specifically asked for in order to try and sell out the 72,000 seat stadium. Golden Boy Promotions has retrofitted the stadium for 30,000, but if it were to reach the limit then you could expect it to be resized for however many boxing fans would come to the event.

Canelo: I’m ready to face Mayweather whenever he wants

floyd17By Dan Ambrose: Some fighters never get a clue, and they end up wasting time instead of focusing on makeable fights. WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez thinks he’s going to get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September despite Mayweather having already said no to Canelo’s pressure tactics to try and weasel a fight with him.

Canelo said to Ringtv “I’m happy to fight Floyd Mayweather when he’s ready to fight me.”

There’s a real problem with this. Mayweather doesn’t like to face guys that have been exposed. He’ll make an exception every now and then for guys like Miguel Cotto, but it’s rare that he does this. Most of the time Mayweather prefers to be the guy that exposes fighters, because he doesn’t like to get sloppy seconds when it comes to beating a guy.

Marquez: I won’t fight Canelo because he’s too big

Houston_0U9C3156_send(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Mexican legendary fighter Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s), who has spent most of his career fighting at featherweight and super featherweight, says he won’t move up to the 154 pound division to face WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) because the size difference between them is too much.

Speaking with Univision Deportes, Marquez said “In April, I’ll decide if I want to keep boxing or retire. I definitely won’t fight Saul Alvarez because it’s a lot of weight to move up to middleweight [junior middleweight], and on fight night that would be the average weight for Canelo. Additionally, he has a tough fight against Austin Trout. He must show his merit.”

Canelo-Trout: 11K tickets priced at $10 for April 20th fight

austin1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: It looks as if WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) was serious about having a good portion of his tickets priced at only $10 for his April 20th unification bout against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

According to Dan Rafael, there are 11 thousand tickets priced at $11 per ticket. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says Canelo was the driving force behind wanting the tickets to be sold at such a cheap price because he wanted families in the San Antonio area to be able to afford bringing the entire family to the event instead of just one or two showing up.

Canelo vs. Trout tickets to sell as low as $10

alvarez43By Dan Ambrose: The starting point for tickets for the April 20th fight between WBA junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Austin Trout is a mere $10 for their fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The low cost is something that Canelo wanted, according to Steve Kim.

Canelo wants families in the area to be able to afford to get everyone in for the fight in the large 72,000 seat stadium. Of course, it also makes sense for Canelo because if they lower the price of the tickets then a lot more people will show up to watch him fight.

There were estimates that Canelo-Trout will sell perhaps 20,000 tickets a best, but if they lower the price, then they might be able to draw a few more thousand.

Canelo vs. Trout tickets go on sale Monday, March 11th

trout23By Dan Ambrose: The tickets for the April 20th unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) will be going on sale this Monday, March 11th. This is the fight to determine who the best fighter is at 154, and it’s one of those bouts that you don’t want to miss because we could see a real surprise in this fight with someone getting badly exposed.

Canelo, 22, badly wants to avenge the loss of his brother Rigoberto Alvarez, who Trout easily beat by a lopsided 12 round by the scores of 119-108, 119-108 and 119-108.

Rigoberto has the same kind of fighting style as Canelo except that he’s a bigger version at 5’11” compared to 5’9”. It was too easy for Trout, as he picked Rigoberto apart in easily out-boxing him.
