Erislandy Lara: Is there a difference between Amateur and Prize fighting?

lara665By Gerardo Granados: The current WBA light middleweight belt holder Erislandy Lara has expressed his bitterness for not have been awarded the victory in his fight against Canelo Alvarez. He has made many statements and he also has twitted “This sport is called BOXING! Not street fight! When @FloydMayweather moves its called BOXING when I do it its called Running? 117-111?”

It seems like the “American Dream” can’t find any difference between his boxing style and Floyd´s. After seen his tweet I felt obliged to reply, so I asked him “@Laraboxing @FloydMayweather Is there a difference between AMATEUR & PRIZE FIGHTING?” but received no answer.

Canelo passes the maturity test against Lara

canelo037By Yannis Mihanos: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO) proved last Saturday night that he has matured a lot by beating a difficult and skillful fighter Erislandy “The American dream” Lara (19-2-2, 12 KO) by a 12 round split decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golden Boy promotions president Oscar De la Hoya was very much nervous about Canelo taking this fight as it was considered a high risk fight for the 23-year-old Canelo. Oscar would have preferred an easier fight than having Canelo fight a dangerous guy like Lara. But Canelo insisted that he wants Lara to fight next and he was proved right.

Where was the Lara that Beat Angulo?

lara543By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: I re-watched Erislandy Lara’s fight with Alfredo Angulo and then re watched then his fight with Saul Alvarez. The one big difference that I saw in the Angulo fight was; he let his hands go. He stuck to his usual stick and move style, but he was punching when he saw the openings. There was no hesitation on Lara’s end and Angulo’s face showed the results. Even when he was knocked down twice he continued the same level of activity he started out with. Where was this Lara against Canelo? Where? Angulo, like Canelo, is best when he sits down on his punches.

The difference between Canelo and Angulo is Canelo’s ability to cut the ring off. Angulo comes straight ahead which makes it easier for him to be punched. Fighters like that hope, while eating punches and willingness to stalk, would get a fighter to start thinking “I’m hitting him with everything and he’s still coming”.

Canelo vs Lara: The mere Truth

canelo655555By DA: Last Saturday night the boxing world erupted after Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won a 12 round split decision over Erislandy Lara which many believed was controversial at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. That fight was indeed close and both fighters had their moments. Though it wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. You have to give credit for Canelo for taking the fight instead of just avoiding Lara.

My scorecard was 115-113 for Alvarez, and the reason was I felt Lara gave away rounds he could’ve won and instead did more movement than fighting. He had a good start, but he failed to make any adjustments after Canelo started pressuring the Cuban boxer. Canelo on the other hand made adjustments to try and cut the ring off and work Lara’s body. If history tells us anything folks it’s told us judges do not like when a fighter stays on his bike for large amounts of time.

Canelo’s Gift Decision Proves he is not yet Elite

canelo90By Anthony Mason: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) got a win over Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs), but it was far from legitimate. Alvarez had his chance to prove himself, but once again he failed to legitimately win against a truly elite boxer. Canelo, regardless of what the judges said, in reality has lost to the only two elite boxers that he has faced.

Lara clearly won the early rounds, but Canelo came back to make it an even fight after eight rounds. However, Lara definitely won the majority of the later rounds with his footwork and counterpunching. Canelo did land the harder shots, but the majority of them were in the middle rounds. There were also times where Lara was retreating without throwing many punches, but again, those were in the middle rounds, and there were not enough of those rounds to give Canelo the victory.

Lara: De La Hoya knows Canelo got a gift decision

lara72444By Allan Fox: Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KO’s) isn’t playing nice by keeping silent about his 12 round split decision loss to Golden Boy Promotions’ No.1 fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) last Saturday night on Showtime pay-per-view. Lara feels that Canelo was given a gift decision by two of the judges that gave him the win.

Lara says that he landed more shots than Canelo did in the fight, and that the majority of the best punches that Canelo did land were in the 7th round after Lara suffered a cut. Canelo poured it on in that one rare in throwing a huge amount of shots while Lara had blood leaking from his cut into his left eye.

Could Erislandy Lara be finished at the top level?

lara8By Gav Duthie: Erislandy Lara 19-2-2 (12), you tried and you failed. You can forget a rematch against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs), you can forget another big payday, your life at the top table of boxing could be all but over. This opinion is no reflection on Lara’s ability, some of the shots he picked against Canelo on Saturday were brilliant.

At times he even made Canelo look worse than Floyd Mayweather Jr did in his 12 round majority decision win over him last September. This is not about ability its about ‘marketability’ and Lara lost that on Saturday night as well as the fight.

Robert Guerrero: I had Lara beating Canelo

lara9363By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions wants to move his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) for bigger and better things following his 12 round split decision win over Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs) in their middleweight fight last Saturday night, but there are still quite a few people who feel that Canelo was given a bogus win over the Cuban fighter.

Former two division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is one of many people who believe that Lara did enough to deserve a win over Canelo last Saturday night.

“I watched @Laraboxing fight in Mexico yesterday and mostly everyone including me thought he beat Canelo. #Boxing #Rematch,” Guerrero said on his twitter.

Why Lara lost against Canelo

lara567By Hector Gonzalez: I’m reading some comments regarding last nights fight between Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) as some fans feel that it was a controversial decision in Canelo’s favor. Some of these fans are even claiming that Lara put on a ‘boxing clinic’ and ‘schooled Canelo’, Some of these same fans are even using the ‘term hit and not be hit’ inaccurately, justifying as to why Lara was inactive through out a few of the rounds. Lara performance was not about the sweet science.

First of all I will start of by saying that it was a close fight, but I had Canelo winning by a round or two. It was close but I would like to clear the air more than anything about what some of these fans are saying.

Lara compares his performance against Canelo to Mayweather’s

lara7890By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-2-2, 12 KO’s) was getting some grief by a reporter last night following his spirited performance in losing a very controversial 12 round split decision to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lara compared the way he fought Canelo with the way that Floyd Mayweather Jr did, and feels he should have been given the nod by the judges.

An unnamed reporter though feels that Lara didn’t show enough to win the fight.
