Canelo vs. Kirkland this Saturday, May 9th on HBO from Houston, Texas

canelo5556By Prof Johny: While last Saturday ended up being a major letdown for everyone but the Vegas bookies with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao clash in Las Vegas, Nevada, this coming Saturday on May 9th has a far better chance of being the all action fight we hoped we would get between Floyd and Manny.

Saul Canelo Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will be fighting James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) at a catch-weight of 155 pounds in middleweight action at Minute Maid Park in Houston,Texas will be an exciting match-up that would have been an amazing undercard bout on the Mayweather-Pacquiao card. Unfortunately Canelo is with Golden Boy promotions who had zero interaction with the Mayweather fight card last Saturday night.

Breaking down the fight: Kirkland has had a year and half long layoff since his last fight in 2013, his ring rust, or lack their of will be crucial for him, as he has had some rough first rounds before and almost been knocked out.

Kirkland will need to make adjustments against Canelo

KirklandSAWorkout_Hoganphotos(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: The ring rusty James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) is definitely going to need to adapt to some of the things that former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) is doing in the ring next month in their battle on May 9th on HBO Championship Boxing at the Minute Maid Park, in Houston, Texas, USA.

Kirkland, 31, has never been a particularly skillful fighter. He’s always been someone who got the better of his opposition with his power and his nonstop pressure.

KirklandSAWorkout_Hoganphotos6(Photo Credit: Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: American slugger James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) feels confident that he can beat the red-haired former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) in their fight next month on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Kirkland, 30, says he’s studied the fighting style of the 24-year-old Canelo, and he feels he can defeat his style of fighting. Kirkland is ready slug with Canelo if that’s the type of fight that he’ll be looking to bring on May 9th.

Kirkland is looking forward to this fight because he sees Canelo as someone that he can definitely beat.

“I want to fight Canelo because I know his style. You see something, you analyze it, and I feel like I can beat him,” Kirkland said. “I know Canelo is going to put in the work on fight night. I want to be a step ahead of him, so if he comes to box or comes for a slug fest, I will be ready.”

canelo99887(Photo Credit: HoganPhotos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: WBA interim welterweight champion Andre Berto is giving slugger James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) a puncher’s chance of beating former WBA/WBC 154lb champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) in their fight in two months from now on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park, in Houston, Texas, USA.

Canelo says he’s staying at 154, not moving to 160!

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) will be fighting for the third consecutive time at a 155 pound catch-weight when he faces James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KOs) on May 9th at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.

Despite this being his third straight fight at what is technically a new 155 pound class that he’s been fighting at, Canelo is saying that he can still 154 and that he doesn’t want to move up in weight to fight at middleweight.

The middleweight division goes from 155 to 160 pounds, so Canelo has been fighting as a middleweight, not as a junior middleweight in his last two fights.

canelo565By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (44-1-1, 31 KOs) says he likes to face the fighters that boxing fans think he won’t fight. “In just two hours since they went on sale, 15,000 tickets have been sold for May 9,” Dela Hoya said.

It’s hard to believe that the Canelo vs. Kirkland fight sold 15,000 tickets in just two hours, because it’s not a great fight.
