Broner vs. Burns: Ricky wins this one

Image: Broner vs. Burns: Ricky wins this oneBy Stevie Ocallaghan: A lot of talk is made of the fact that World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight champion Ricky Burns moved up in weight. Some think he ran from Adrien Broner. The actual fact is as you get older, you fill out and it was draining all physical reserves he had to try keep to the 9st 4 limit.

After the 4 round demolition of Kevin Mitchell, you could see Burns was far bigger and stronger, so why would you drain yourself to stay at an unnatural weight just to suit others when it’s not what’s best for you.

Will Ricky Burns duck Adrien Broner?

Image: Will Ricky Burns duck Adrien Broner?By Scott Gilfoid: We recently saw what appeared to be WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns putting it on his promoter/management as to whether he’ll be stepping in the ring with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in a unification bout in 2013.

I for one never thought that Burns would fight Broner in the first place given that Burns had a chance to fight him last year and instead moved up in weight to lightweight. So, I wasn’t at all surprised when Burns told Steve Bunce that it’s up to his promoter whether he fights Broner.

Ricky Burns: The Broner fight is up to my management

Image: Ricky Burns: The Broner fight is up to my managementBy Scott Gilfoid: Whether WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) faces WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) in a mouthwatering unification bout in the near future is up to Burns’s management, he says.

Burns told Steve Bunce “I just leave it up to my management and promoter. They always give me the fights at the right time.”

So Burns is just leaving up to his management and promoter whether he fights Broner? I can’t stand when fighters give that as the excuse when asked why don’t they fight so and so. I mean, does Burns want to fight Broner or not? The old ‘I’m leaving it up to my promoter bit’ makes me think that Burns isn’t all that interested in facing Broner.

Speaking with RingTV, Burns said “After this fight, [Burns’s December 15th fight date], Broner said he would like a unification fight and there’s a chance he might come over here.”

Ricky Burns to fight Adrien Broner in in February or March next year, says Warren

Image: Ricky Burns to fight Adrien Broner in in February or March next year, says WarrenBy Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren is saying that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will be fighting unbeaten Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) next year in February or March, provided that Burns wins his fight against a still to be determined opponent on December 15th and the 23-year-old Broner wins his next fight on November 17th against WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Warren said in his column at frankwarren.com “Provided that Rickster [Burns] prevails [in December 15 fight], I have an understanding with Golden Boy [Broner’s promoters] for him to lock horns with white hot U.S hope Adrien Broner in late February or March.”

Ricky Burns would be in for a beating against Adrien Broner

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) needs to stay far away from unbeaten lightweight contender Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) if he knows what’s good for him. Beating an undersized Kevin Mitchell is one thing for Burns, but trying to defeat someone his own weight and much faster, stronger and better defensively in Broner would be a recipe for disaster for Burns.

Burns now likely to vacate WBO title rather than fight Broner: Looks like a duck job

Image: Burns now likely to vacate WBO title rather than fight Broner: Looks like a duck jobBy Scott Gilfoid: WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (32-2, 9 KO’s) was supposed to be facing his number #1 contender American Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KO’s) on November 26th in Cincinnati, Ohio.

But now Burns’ trainer Alex Morrison is saying he’s having problems making the super featherweight limit, and that Burns will likely vacate his World Boxing Organization title and move up in weight to the lightweight division to go after one of the titles up there rather than face the dangerous Broner. Looks like a good duck job to me. How sad. Burns is going to run away rather than get crushed by Broner on November 26th.
