Warren: Burns didn’t want the fight with Broner

burns43By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ former promoter Frank Warren has revealed that Burns didn’t want the unification fight with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) when it was offered to him.

We had previously heard that Burns wasn’t interested in facing the talented Broner, but now Burns’ ex-promoter is revealing it to the world in his latest column.

Warren said to thesun.co.uk “He [Burns] was offered the Adrien Broner fight in writing, and he didn’t want that.”

Schaefer to make last attempt at making Burns vs. Broner fight for June 15th

broner4225By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to give it one last shot to see if he can put together a unification bout between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) for June 15th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Schaefer says he’s going to contact Burns’ promoter Frank Warren on Monday to see if they’re interested in the Broner fight on June 15th. If not, then Schaefer will be putting together a fight between Broner vs. WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi on June 22nd in New York.

Schaefer: I offered Ricky Burns a lot of money to fight Broner but was turned down

broner45By Scott Gilfoid: After learning that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ fight with IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez was experiencing some difficulties, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made one last attempt to try and set up a unification bout between Burns and the Golden Boy promoted WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner, but the HUGE offer made to Burns was reportedly turned down by his manager.

Schaefer said to Dan Rafael of ESPN “I offered Frank [Warren] a lot of money for Burns to come over. It’s a VERY big number…At least Ricky is going to make double or triple what he can make in this fight with Vazquez. Frank said, ‘I’m on board, but the manager doesn’t want to fight Broner.’ He said there’s nothing he can do.”

Schaefer: Ricky Burns’ manager turned down fight with Adrien Broner

broner874By Scott Gilfoid: Well, I guess it really doesn’t matter that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) is still interested in facing IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) instead of the more lucrative fight against WBC lightweight champion. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer reached out to Burns’ promoter Frank Warren about a fight on June 15th, but the answer was no, according to Dan Rafael.

Rafael said on his twitter “Schaefer told me he reached out to Warren about @ricksterko facing @AdrienBroner in June sted [instead] of resked [rescheduled] Vazquez. Said Burns manager [Alex Morrison] declined.”

Schaefer wants Broner-Burns on June 15th in Las Vegas

burns4545By Scott Gilfoid: In what will likely prove to be an exercise in futility, Golden Boy promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has reportedly contacted the promoter for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) to see if he can agree to match Burns up with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) on June 15th in a unification bout at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Steve Kim.

All I can say about that is good luck, Schaefer. I can already hear the excuses flying for why Burns can’t take that fight, something along the lines of him needing more time to prepare than just three months or maybe he can’t the fight because he needs to move up to another weight class.

Cook: Ricky Burns can’t beat Adrien Broner

broner46By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBO super featherweight champion Nicky Cook believes WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) doesn’t have the talent to beat WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) right now, and if that fight comes off in the future, which is a possibility unless Burns chooses not to take it yet again, then Broner will beat him, Cook thinks.

Cook said to thesun.co.uk “I hate to say it, and I really hope he doesn’t get the hump over this, but I can’t see Ricky beating Broner…he’s definitely a bit like Floyd Mayweather in that respect.”

Burns may be saved from a fight against Broner if he can’t get past his next test IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) on March 16th at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom. This is a real toss up fight because Vazquez probably will clown Burns and make him look bad.

Broner: I’m moving up to 140 after I beat Burns; I want the green belt [WBC]

broner68By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) reiterated earlier tonight that he wants to fight WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns next, and after he beats him, Broner then plans on moving up to the light welterweight division to target the WBC title currently held by WBC 140 lb. champion Danny Garcia.

Broner said to ESPN “I want to fight Ricky Burns then move up to light welterweight. Hopefully, he’ll win his fight [against Miguel Vazquez], then I can move straight up to light welterweight [after I beat Burns]. I’m moving for the green belt [World Boxing Council]. I should be ranked #2 [pound-for-pound] behind my big brother [Floyd Mayweather Jr]. I’m about billions, he’s about money.”

Rees’ views on Broner vs. Burns fight

burns7By Steven Ocallaghan: So I see after the fight that took place in Atlantic City New Jersey last Saturday night, Gavin Rees, who put up a game but ultimately tame performance against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner has now stated that he doesn’t think that WBO lightweight Champ Ricky Burns stands any chance against Broner.

Let’s get some facts here. Rees isn’t even Number 1 in Britain let alone the world. Burns is 1 in Britain, The Commonwealth and Europe and rated 3rd best in the lightweight division. Rees judges his decision on sparring. After sparring with Burns he has decided that Broner is to fast and hits harder. I won’t deny Broner hits faster and harder but Burns is physically stronger. He is no slouch himself and has a great defense. Burns will out-muscle Broner unlike the 5’4″ Rees.

Broner to Burns: I’m ready to fight you!

broner43By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) called out WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 Ko’s) tonight on BoxNation, saying he wants to fight him and daring him to get in the ring with him so that he can find out which is the better guy.

Broner said “I’m ready to fight you! You didn’t have an opponent for your next fight date, but you didn’t choose to fight me. I’m ready to fight you.”

Broner and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions were hoping that Burns would agree to fight him in February next year, but instead of agreeing to that fight Burns’ promoters is talking about having Burns back in the ring on January 26th in a title defense in Glasgow, Scotland instead of agreeing to take the much bigger fight with Broner.
