Berto says sparring with Ward helped him with Ortiz fight

Image: Berto says sparring with Ward helped him with Ortiz fightBy Allan Fox: Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) tuned his career around last Saturday night with a fourth round knockout win over his old nemesis Victor Ortiz (31-6-2, 24 KOs) in their rematch at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

A loss for Berto in this fight would have removed any chance of him getting a crack at WBC 147lb world champion Danny Garcia, and it might have did his career in. The improvement that Berto made in his skills came from his hard work in sparring with former WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, who shares the same trainer as him in Virgil Hunter out of Hayward, California.

Berto destroys Ortiz in 4th round KO

berto84By Chris Williams: We may have seen the end of former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s pro career tonight with him getting knocked down and stopped in the 4th round by former IBF/WBC 147lb champion Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Berto did little until the 4th round at which time he knocked Ortiz down twice with big right hands. Ortiz failed to say he wanted to continue after the second knockdown when asked by referee Jack Reiss if he wanted to continue. The fight was official halted at 1:14 of the 4th.

Berto-Ortiz, Montiel-Lara make weight

Image: Berto-Ortiz, Montiel-Lara make weight(Photo Credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) made weight on Friday for their non-title fight on Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Berto weighed in at 146.8lbs and Ortiz also weighed in at 146.8lbs. Ortiz looked very drained at the weigh-in.

That makes you wonder how much weight he’ll be putting back on overnight. Berto could be dealing with a super middleweight by the time he gets in the ring tomorrow night. Ortiz looks like he’s going to rehydrate well into the 160s. He’s been training hard obviously, but it’s possible that Ortiz has grown out of the welterweight division at the age of 29.
