Berto okay after hospital checkup

Image: Berto okay after hospital checkupBy Allan Fox: Andre Berto 28-2, 22 KO’s) made a brief visit to the Loma Linda medical center to get checked out after his loss to Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night to get a CAT scan and to be checked out for bruising of both of his eyes. However, Berto was only there for two hours and he was then allowed to go after nothing serious was found wrong with him, according to RingTV.

Other than Berto’s eyes, he really didn’t take a lot of punishment from Guerrero. The shots that Berto was getting hit with weren’t really powerful shots, but they did damage to his eyes because there were so many of them. Berto’s left eye closed in the 2nd round after he was thumbed by a left hand from Guerrero. That got Berto off to a really bad start because he was concerned about the eye, and he wasn’t really able to focus. You could see that he was in a lot of pain.

Schaefer: Berto will be fighting for a world title in 2013

Image: Schaefer: Berto will be fighting for a world title in 2013By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer believes that his fighter former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) will bounce back from his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision loss to Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) and will be fighting for a world title in the near future.

Schaefer said to RingTV “Andre Berto has a lot to be proud of. He will be back, and he will be back, bigger, better and stronger. I am convinced that he will be fighting for a world title again in 2013.”

Now that’s a scary thought. But the sad truth is that Berto probably will be fighting for a world title for Golden Boy in 2013. After all, Golden Boy is matching 35-year-old Zab Judah against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia next year on February 9th in a fight that few boxing fans see as a competitive match-up or even close to being a competitive fight.

What’s with all the hate towards Robert Guerrero?

Image: What’s with all the hate towards Robert Guerrero?By Hector Gonzalez: I’m not sure what’s with all the hate towards Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero, I thought that I’d write a response article towards all the negative commentary made towards Guerrero after his victory over Andre Berto. In my opinion lack of respect towards a respectable bonafide champion either by fans or by the media is anything but productive for boxing.

It appears that many fans are unfamiliar with Guerrero’s career and it’s my speculation that maybe that’s why so many people where surprised to see him demolish Berto the way that he did. Here are a few things that you should know about Guerrero to put things into perspective, specially in rewards to the possibility of him fighting Floyd Mayweather in the near future. I could write about his entire career but I’ll stick to some key facts.

Berto vs. Guerrero: Disappointing officiating

Image: Berto vs. Guerrero: Disappointing officiatingIn watching Andre Berto versus Robert Guerrero last Saturday night it becomes ever more apparent that boxing referees are increasingly making bad calls, just as the judges have in recent years. How can boxing continue as a fair sport if we cannot get referees and judges to do their job properly?

In watching this fight, the first and most obvious bad call was with the first knockdown. Did anyone else notice Guerrero holding Berto behind the head for three consecutive punches before knocking him down? Should that have even been counted as a knockdown? The second knockdown was similar, but not as blatant. Let us just suppose that those two knockdowns were not achieved by fouls and move on to the rest of the fight…

Guerrero should fight Thurman or Broner to get to Mayweather

Image: Guerrero should fight Thurman or Broner to get to MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: If WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero gets a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. off of victories over Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto, I think it’s too easy for him to be getting such an important fight like a Mayweather fight.

Guerrero should have to actually fight and beat two rising stars in the sport like Adrien Broner (25-0, 21 KO’s) and/or Keith Thurman (19-0, 18 KO’s) to get an audience with a fighter as great as Mayweather.

While I think Berto was a good fighter at one time in his career, he’s not looked good in ages, and he hadn’t been in the ring for 14 months when Guerrero beat him last night.

Berto loses again: Will HBO keep televising his fights?

Image: Berto loses again: Will HBO keep televising his fights?By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) looked bad last night in losing by a fairly wide 12 round unanimous decision to Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight televised by HBO. For Berto, this was his second loss in his last two fights, and his second poorly fought fight.

That’s not good especially given that HBO is televising his fights to American audiences nationwide. The question that some boxing fans might have now is how much longer will HBO choose to show Berto’s fights with him losing frequently now, and not looking good.

Guerrero: I’m unstoppable, I want Mayweather

Image: Guerrero: I'm unstoppable, I want MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) did what he had to do against a confused looking Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) last night in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-110 times three at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

It wasn’t a pretty fight to watch because Guerrero chose to smother Berto by taking the fight to the inside and keeping it there for 12 rounds. Berto fought off the ropes for the entire fight just as he did against Victor Ortiz, and it was a bad strategy then and it was bad strategy last night.

Berto made a mistake of trying the Mayweather shoulder roll against Guerrero

Image: Berto made a mistake of trying the Mayweather shoulder roll against GuerreroBy Allan Fox: Andre Berto made a tremendous mistake last Saturday night in his loss to WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero by trying to use Floyd Mayweather Jr’s shoulder roll defense for the entire fight. It didn’t work at all, and Berto just looked silly in getting badly beaten for 12 rounds by Guerrero and ending up with two badly swelled up eyes that were in danger of closing.

For a fighter as advanced in his career as Berto you don’t want to be be changing your fighting style dramatically at this point. For a top world contender you don’t make huge changes like the one that Berto made in adopting Mayweather’s shoulder roll and using it for an entire fight. That kind of thing you want to either start early in your career or try it out for a short period of time in a fight to see if it works.

Berto looked poor in losing to Guerrero

Image: Berto looked poor in losing to GuerreroBy Allan Fox: HBO darling former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) once promising career appears to be sinking into the mire after he suffered another loss last night against Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) in a fight that Berto was expected to win.

Berto barely used his left arm at all making me think that maybe his left bicep hasn’t healed completely after he suffered a ruptured bicep in that arm earlier this year.

As far as his left arm went all Berto did was throw weak flicking jabs from time to time that looked more like backhands than actual jabs. I didn’t see any left hooks thrown from Berto in this fight, and that used to be one of his best weapons before he suffered two left bicep tears.

Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops Quintana

Image: Guerrero defeats Berto; Thurman stops QuintanaBy Jim Dower: In a foul plagued war WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) successfully defending his title by beating former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-2, 22 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

The final judges’ scores were 116-110, 116-110, and 116-110, all for Guerrero. Berto was knocked down twice in the fight. He was knocked down in the 1st round after Guerrero grabbed him around the back of the head with his right hand and held and hit him with four big shots that knocked him down. It’s unclear why the referee didn’t waive off the knockdown because it was a clear case of holding and hitting by Guerrero.
