Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia analysis & prediction

Image: Keith Thurman vs. Danny Garcia analysis & prediction

By Harry Rowland: After having to watch Danny Garcia in far too many foregone conclusions of late, we finally have an absolute 50/50 match-up in Keith Thurman. At this particular time this is the most relevant fight in the Welterweight division. We have two unbeaten fighters with similar experience, and both in their prime.

A very recent common opponent is Robert Guerrero, who took them both the distance in losing but competitive efforts. Thurman appeared to produce the more dominate win, using his foot speed to stay away from attacks, and also knock him down late. Thurman has the slight edge in power with 79% of fights ending in stoppage to Garcia’s 58%. This is more to do with Thurman’s speed as his power shots come unexpectedly. Their actual standing foot planted power is around the same.

Andrzej Fonfara vs. Chad Dawson on Sat. on CBS

Image: Andrzej Fonfara vs. Chad Dawson on Sat. on CBS

By Jim Dower: #9 WBC Andrzej Fonfara (28-4, 16 KOs) will be looking to rebound from his recent 1st round knockout loss to Joe Smith Jr. when he returns to the ring this Saturday night against former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (34-4, 19 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. They’ll be fighting on the undercard of the Danny Garcia vs. Keith Thurman card.

The 29-year-old Fonfara’s career was looking great until recently when he destroyed by the hard hitting Smith Jr. on June 18 last year. It was a bitter pill for Fonfara to swallow, as the fight took place in front of his own fans at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (34-4, 19 KOs) and #8 WBC, #13 IBF Andrzej Fonfara (28-4, 16 KOs) have been added to the undercard of the welterweight unification fight between WBC champion Danny Garcia and WBC champ Keith Thurman on March 4 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It’s unclear if the Fonfara-Dawson fight will be shown on the televised portion of Showtime Championship Boxing or if it will be an off TV fight. The card has already got some good undercard fights on it already. I don’t know if you can call the Fonfara-Dawson fight a good match.

Fonfara, 28, wants to beat Smith Jr., and then face WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis “Super Man” Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) in December so that he can avenge his loss to him from 2014.

Stevenson defeated Fonfara by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 116-109, 115-110 and 115-110. The fight was mostly one-sided other than a knockdown Fonfara scored late in the contest. Stevenson dominated before and after the knockdown.

Spence, 26, will be working the Fonfara-Smith fight as a commentator on the Premier Boxing Champions telecast on NBC.

Weights: Lubin-Sandoval, Fonfara-Smith Jr. & Payano-Warren

(Photo credit: Nabeel Ahmad/Premier Boxing Champions) By Patrick McHugh: #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #4 WBO light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) made weight on Friday in coming in at 174.5 pounds for his scheduled 12 round fight against prospect Joe Smith Jr. (21-1, 17 KOs) for their fight on Saturday night Premier Boxing Champions on NBC and NBCSN from the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

Smith, 26, weighed in at 173lbs. This should be an interesting fight for while it lasts. Fonfara, 28, is seen as the far better fighter though, and this one figures to be a mismatch. Smith hasn’t been fighting quality opposition, and he was taken out in four rounds by a fighter named Eddie Caminero (6-3) in 2010. The Fonfara-Smith fight gives Fonfara a decent stay busy fight to keep him ready until he gets a title shot against one of the 175lb champions. It would be surprising if Smith is still aroun by the later rounds of the contest.

Fonfara vs. Smith Jr. in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday

By Patrick McHugh: #2 WBC, #3 WBA, #4 WBO light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (28-3, 16 KOs) will be taking a step down in competition this Saturday night against 26-year-old prospect Joe Smith (21-1, 17 KOs) in a scheduled 10 round bout on June 18 on Premier Boxing Champions on NBCSN at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois.

This is a huge step down for Fonfara from the guys he’s been fighting lately in his fights against Nathan Cleverly, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Adonis Stevenson. Smith is arguably at the same talent level of Doudou Ngumbu, a fighter Fonfara defeated two years ago by a 10 round decision.

By Ian Aldous: On Saturday June 18th, Joe Smith Jr.(21-1), will face the toughest test of his career when he goes up against hometown hero, Andrzej Fonfara (28-3), at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, live on NBC. Last week, the resident of Long Island, New York, took some time out from preparing for the fight to chat with me over the phone about the impending fight and his career so far.

IA: This isn’t the first time you’ve fought on a big PBC card. How did you find the experience of fighting in the Barclays Center as chief support to Peter Quillin Vs. Daniel Jacobs?
