Ward didn’t impress against Brand

ward1111

By Allan Fox: Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) still didn’t impress last Saturday night despite being matched against an old and smaller fighter in 39-year-old Alexander Brand (25-2, 19 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. In fact, the fight was boring because of Ward. He made it boring by not going after a guy that was a showcase opponent. While some boxing fans are calling Ward’s performance last Saturday against Brand as a “great performance,” I think it was a boring safety first performance.

There was an official explanation given why Ward had to fight an guy from the super middleweight division in Alexander Brand rather than fighting someone from the 175lb division.

Ward: I’m a combination of Mayweather, Jones Jr and Hopkins

ward4555

By Patrick McHugh: Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) broke down the guys that he’s patterned his fighting style after last night following his 12 round decision win over Alexander Brand at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Ward said that he’s a combination of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins. It was interesting to hear Ward explain where he got his fighting style.

Hopkins is someone that jumps out at you when you look at how Ward fought last night and in his previous fights. Mayweather and Jones Jr. are fighters that completely different from how Ward fights like. I don’t see any of those fighters’ styles inside Ward’s style.

Hopkins: Ward must smother Kovalev’s offense

ward5555

Byn Allan Fox: Andre Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) must disarm IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev to beat him in their fight on November 19, according to Bernard Hopkins. He feels that Ward has to take away Kovalev’s right hand immediately to be successful. From there, Hopkins thinks that Ward can smother the 33-year-old Kovalev all night long in their fight on HBO pay-per-view.

What this means for boxing fans is that they would likely see Ward clinching a lot, and wrestling on the inside for 12 rounds. We saw a lot of the wrestling last night with Ward’s 12 round unanimous decision victory over Alexander Brand (25-2, 19 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.

Kovalev: I don’t see anything new from Andre Ward

kovalev9

By Allan Fox: Sergey Kovalev was at ringside last Saturday night to see former super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s fight against Alexander Brand (25-2, 19 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Kovalev says he didn’t see anything new from the 32-year-old Ward that he hadn’t seen before from him. Ward beat Brand by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108.

The fight was televised by HBO Boxing. The commentators for HBO seemed impressed enough by Ward’s performance, but they didn’t go overboard in pouring the praise on him the way they do with other fighters. That gives you a hint that they may not have been entirely been impressed with what they saw last night. They had to say something though, because the fight was seen as a very boring one by a lot of boxing fans. For the HBO commentators to whitewash it by saying that it was good performance and good fight from Ward was predictable.

Brand: “Ward has no power, Kovalev knocks him out”

ward789

By Dan Ambrose: Alexander Brand came up short last night in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision to former super middleweight champion Andre Ward at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Brand, 39, lost every single round of the fight in losing by the scores 120-108, 120-108 and 120-108. However, he came away from the fight less than impressed with the 32-year-old Ward’s punching power. In fact, Brand (25-2, 19 KOs) says that Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) has no power at all in his punches, and he feels that IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev will beat Ward when the two of them fight on November 19 on HBO pay-per-view.

For future fights, HBO Boxing needs to be a little more selective in the type of opponents that they’re willing to give the green light to for Ward’s fights. The Ward-Brand fight arguably should have never been televised in my opinion because it was such a horrible mismatch on paper. I feel the same way about Ward’s fight against Paul Smith, but that wasn’t televised by HBO.

Andre Ward dominates Alexander Brand

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Andre Ward showed off his stuff in beating Alexander Brand in a clinical fashion on Saturday night in giving the boxing world a taste of what they’re going to get on November 19 when Ward works over IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev. Ward (30-0, 15 KOs) did everything that was asked of him tonight in beating Brand (25-2, 19 KOs) like a drum in front of a large crowd at the Oracle Arena in beautiful Oakland, California. HBO Boxing televised the fight for the U.S fans. They got the chance to see Ward put in a masterful performance that reminded me of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Kovalev to be ringside for Ward vs. Brand

Image: Kovalev to be ringside for Ward vs. Brand

By Patrick McHugh: Sergey Kovalev will be at ringside tonight for Andre Ward’s tune-up fight against Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs) at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Kovalev, the IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion, will be in attendance to scout out Ward, who he’ll be facing next on November 19th on HBO pay-per-view, provide that Ward wins the fight tonight against the 39-year-old Brand. The fight between Kovalev and Ward will be officially announce inside the ring after the Ward-Brand fight. The fight will be televised on HBO Boxing.

The venue for the Kovalev vs. Ward fight was supposed to be taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, there’s a possibility that it could be moved to Madison Square Garden in New York. Having the fight staged in New York might help with ticket sales for the venue due to the large Russian community in the New York area. Having the fight in Las Vegas isn’t as good a deal because Kovalev and Ward’s fans would need to travel a long ways to attend the fight.

Andre Ward a HUGE favorite tonight

Image: Andre Ward a HUGE favorite tonight

By Dan Ambrose: Andre “S.O.G.” Ward will be a tremendous favorite tonight when he faces Columbian Alexander Brand in a fight televised by HBO Boxing from Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Bovado has the unbeaten 32-year-old Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) the favorite by the line -10000 to +1600 for the 39-year-old undersized Brand.

It’s not surprising that Ward is the favorite because everything about the match-up guarantees that he wins and wins big in this fight. First off, Brand was selected by Ward’s management from the 168lb division rather than the 175lb division that he’s currently fighting in. Secondly, Brand is small at only 5’10” and possibly even shorter than that compared to the 6’0” Ward.

Purses: Ward $850K, Brand $30K

ward65

By Allan Fox: Andre Ward (29-0, 15 KOs) will be getting the lion’s share of the loot this Saturday night in his fight against the unofficial sacrificial lamb Alexander Brand (25-1, 19 KOs) in their 12 round fight at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Ward will be getting a purse of $850,000 compared to just $30,000 for the 39-year-old Brand. In other words, Ward will be getting $820,000 more than Brand for the fight. With the little bit of money that Brand is getting for the fight, it’s no wonder Ward’s promoters didn’t get a better opponent for him to fight.

Brand is a 39-year-old fighter that was picked out from the super middleweight division instead of the light heavyweight division. If all Ward’s opponent was going to get was $30K, then there’s no way that the top 175lb fighters would agree to that kind of money like Artur Beterbiev, Joe Smith Jr. and Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
