Matchroom Boxing’s Saturday Card: Predictions

brook20By Dean Bain: Saturday night sees the return of another stacked card from Matchroom Boxing. Kell Brook, Brian Rose, Anthony Joshua, Callum Smith and Kai Yafai are all part of the main show along with local fighters Adam Etches, scott Jenkins and Sam O’Maison.

Matchroom are continuing to put together cards which makes fans want to get to the arena before the main event. I watch BoxNation as well as Sky Sports and to be honest any promoter who has had shows on BoxNation the cards are normally paper thin in my view. Matchroom have the main attraction, a solid chief support fight and then lots of prospects which normally include the Olympic kids. If you compare this coming Saturdays card to the Carl Frampton card last Saturday they are on different levels.

Brook-Senchenko: A tough fight for Kell

brook444By Irv Lett: Many boxing fans have written off former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) for his fight this Saturday night against unbeaten UK fighter Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The 27-year-old Brook is already seen as the winner, and people are talking about who he’ll fight after that. I think this is wrong and it’s possible that we could see Brook going down in this fight.

The warning signs for a possible Brook loss are already out there if you look at how Brook fought in his recent 8th round TKO win over Carson Jones last July. While Brook looked good while on offense, he didn’t look nearly as good when getting hit back. In fact, he looked very average when Jones would throw a few token shots at him every now and then.

Brook vs. Senchenko & Joshua vs. Butlin this Saturday

brook8By Scott Gilfoid: This Saturday night unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) will be taking a slight step up fight, if you want to call it that, against former WBA 147 lb. strap holder Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) in an IBF welterweight title eliminator bout scheduled for 12 rounds at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Brook, 27, has been talking about his fight with the soon to be 37-year-old Senchenko as being something that will show the boxing world what a good fighter is he. But I can’t see where this fight is going to do much for Brook other than proving that he can beat a fighter that the light-hitting Paulie Malignaggi manhandled last year in April.

Brook thinks a win over Senchenko will prove he’s elite

senchenko3By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten British welterweight contender Kell Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) thinks a win over former WBA 147 lb. champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) on October 26th will prove to fans that he’s an elite fighter.

Senchenko is the tough opponent that Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn had been talking about for ages that he wanted to match Brook against. Before the fight was announced, I had envisioned Brook facing someone that actually had an excellent chance of totally dominating him in a one-sided fashion like Keith Thurman, but I guess I should have known better.

Brook said to Sky Sports “He’s [Senchenko] come over here and he’s got a point to prove like he had last time with Ricky Hatton. I now want to get revenge for the fans also myself. I want to go out there and show why I’m talked about at the elite level.”

This will be Brooks 31st fight but I can’t help but think after 30 victories Brook should be fighting someone with more creditability than the Ukrainian. Brook has so much talent and could be a great within the welterweight division but he really does need to start fighting people in the top 10

Anthony Joshua vs. Paul Butlin on Brook-Senchenko card on October 26th

joshua656By Scott Gilfoid: 2012 British Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Anthony Joshua (1-0, 1 KO’s) will be fighting against 37-year-old journeyman Paul Butlin (14-19, 3 KO’s) on October 26th on the undercard of the Kell Brook vs. Vyacheslav Senchenko card at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Butlin has lost 13 out of his last 15 fights, and he’s looked especially bad recently in losing to Dorian Darch and Gary Cornish. Butlin has lost to a lot of well-known fighters like Larry Olubamiwo, Dereck Chisora [twice], Johnathon Banks, Paolo Vidoz, David Dolan and Sebastian Koeber. I would say that he would give Joshua a good test, but given his lack of power and his advanced age, I think this is just another fodder opponent for Joshua.

Anthony Joshua to fight on October 26th on Brook-Senchenko undercard

joshua553By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight prospect Anthony Joshua (1-0, 1 KO’s) made his pro debut last night in stopping a game but badly over-matched Emanuele Leo (8-1, 3 KO’s) in the 1st round at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Joshua will be back in the ring later this month on October 26th against an opponent still to be determined on the undercard of the welterweight match-up between Kell Brook and former WBA 147 lb. champion Vyacheslav Senchenko at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Joshua said to Sky Sports “It will probably be another tough opponent…I’ll be back in training to prepare for whoever I’ve got to compete against.”

Brook vs. Senchenko: Will Kell finally step it up after this fight?

brook23By Scott Gilfoid: We heard from Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn how Brook (30-0, 20 KO’s) was supposed to be fighting a quality opponent for his next fight on October 26th, but instead of Brook fighting a high quality opponent, Brook will be facing former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Sanchenko (34-1, 23 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, UK.

Yes, Senchenko was technically the WBA 147 lb. champion for three years, but look who Senchenko beat in order to win the title – Yuriy Nuzhnenko. This is the same Nuzhnenko that Matthew Hatton easily beat in 2010 by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision. I mean, look at the guys that Senchenko defended his WBA title against in 3 years: Motoki Sasaki, Charlie Navarro, Marco Antonio Avendano and Paulie Malignaggi, who whipped him last year in a 9th round stoppage.

This is a tune-up bout to get the 36-year-old Senchenko ready for his fight against Kell Brook on October 26th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK.

Senchenko is the “big name” that Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn had been talking about when speaking about his October bout. However, when fans heard that Hearn had a big name, they assumed that it was a relevant fighter among the very top of the division, not a guy that was stopped by Paulie Malignaggi in the 9th round last year in April like Senchenko was.
