Berto destroys Ortiz in 4th round KO

berto84 By Chris Williams: We may have seen the end of former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s pro career tonight with him getting knocked down and stopped in the 4th round by former IBF/WBC 147lb champion Andre Berto (31-4, 24 KOs) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Berto did little until the 4th round at which time he knocked Ortiz down twice with big right hands. Ortiz failed to say he wanted to continue after the second knockdown when asked by referee Jack Reiss if he wanted to continue. The fight was official halted at 1:14 of the 4th.

By Jeff Aranow: It’s been ages since we’ve seen 147 pound fighters Andre Berto and Victor Berto battle each other in an exciting 12 round war back in 2011. The two fighters were among the best in the division at the time they fought. Now they’ll be doing it again tonight when Berto and Ortiz, both now no longer top names, will be fighting on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Berto vs. Ortiz has a start time of 8:00 p.m. ET. This fight isn’t the best fight on the card, however. There are some interesting undercard fights involving light heavyweight Edwin Rodriguez (28-1, 19 KOs) facing Thomas Williams Jr. (19-1, 13 KOs), and featherweight Fernando Montiel (54-5-2, 39 KOs) fighting Jorge Lara (27-0-2, 19 KOs).

By Dan Ambrose: Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) and Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) will both be getting well paid for their fight this Saturday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox. Ortiz and Berto will both be receiving purses of $750,000 despite neither of them being world champions.

The winner of the Berto vs. Ortiz fight could see a big jump up in pay if their manager sets them up for a title shot against WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia. That’s where it seems to be heading. Berto is ranked #3 with the World Boxing Council despite the fact that he was totally schooled by former WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

Berto weighed in at 146.8lbs and Ortiz also weighed in at 146.8lbs. Ortiz looked very drained at the weigh-in.

That makes you wonder how much weight he’ll be putting back on overnight. Berto could be dealing with a super middleweight by the time he gets in the ring tomorrow night. Ortiz looks like he’s going to rehydrate well into the 160s. He’s been training hard obviously, but it’s possible that Ortiz has grown out of the welterweight division at the age of 29.

By Dan Ambrose: It’s been six long years since Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) last fought Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) in their fight in April 2011, but now the two of them will be facing each other in a rematch in eight days from now on April 30 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Ortiz beat Berto by a 12 round decision in their fight in the past. Ortiz knocked Berto down in the 1st, and Berto returned the favor in the 2nd round. In the 6th, both guys went down. However, Berto gassed out and ended up getting dominated in the last half of the fight. It’s quite possible we’ll see the same scenario play out in the rematch if Ortiz makes it to that part of the fight.
