David Price to fight a more conservative fight against Tony Thompson in rematch on July 6th

price43By Scott Gilfoid: Heavily hyped heavyweight David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) tried to bum rush 41-year-old Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) last February like Price had done against many of his previous God awful opponents and it didn’t work out too well with Price getting flattened in the 2nd round in an embarrassing knockout loss in front of his own British boxing fans in Liverpool, UK.

Now, the 29-year-old Price is going to be fighting Thompson again in Liverpool, this time on July 6th. The 6’8” Price has the hometown advantage again, but he and his trainer are saying they’re going to use a more conservative approach to the fight to keep from leaving openings that the 6’5” southpaw Thompson can take advantage of.

Price: My rematch with Tony Thompson is a make or break fight for me

price#2By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) realizes that the excuses that he gave for getting knocked out in the 2nd round by an out of shape looking 41-year-old Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) last February won’t fly next time around when the two fighters meet up with each other in a rematch on July 6th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.

Price said to Sky Sports “Everyone in their career has a defeat by someone they shouldn’t have been beaten by. I’m in a very fortunate position where I can get the rematch straightaway. If I felt I was out of my depth with Tony Thompson or outclassed or beaten up, but I know in my heart if I stay disciplined and stay in my game plan and use what I’ve got, I can make it an easy fight. It’s a massive lesson. Complacency did set in. It’s time to eradicate that in my next fight. 12 months down the line I want to say that was the best thing that could have happened to me. It’s a must-win fight. It’s a make or break fight for me.”

Price will face Chisora in 2013 if he can get past Tony Thompson in rematch on July 6th

price50By Scott Gilfoid: If British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) can get past 6’5” Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) in their rematch on July 6th, Price will then defend his domestic level straps against Dereck Chisora (15-4, 9 KO’s) this year.

The Price-Chisora fight also hinges upon Chisora getting past Ondrej Pala (32-3, 22 KO’s) on April 20th on the Nathan Cleverly vs. Robin Krasniqi card at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. At this point in his career Chisora can’t take any wins for granted because he hasn’t won a fight in two years. That’s pretty sad, but true.

David Price vs. Tony Thompson II rematch on July 6th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK

price#2By Scott Gilfoid: British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-1, 13 KO’s) will be facing 41-year-old Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) in a rematch on July 6th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. Price’s promoter Frank Maloney was able to line up the rematch with the 6’5” Thompson, who made easy work of Price last month in stopping him in the 2nd round in a surprise upset.

Thompson discovered in the fight that Price can dish it out, but he sure can’t take it very well because he hit the deck with one of the first punches that Thompson landed in the fight. It was kind of jarring to see Price flop down on the canvas after getting hit with what looked like a harmless right hand to the head, but then again Price hadn’t been used to getting hit in his 15 previous fights, so it’s perhaps not that surprising that he went down when hit.

David Tua vs. Tony Thompson is a possibility for August

tua43By Allan Fox: Ducco Events, the promoters for 40-year-old David Tua (52-4-2, 43 KO’s), have reportedly made a verbal offer to 41-year-old American heavyweight contender Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) for Tua’s comeback in August, according to stuff.co.uk.

The 6’5” Thompson is one of the top names that Tua’s promoter is hoping to get for the August fight. There’s no word whether Thompson has accepted or not.

It’s doubtful he’ll say yes unless it’s a really good offer because Golden Boy Promotions is interested in matching Thompson against their unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s), and British heavyweight David Price is also interested in facing Thompson.

Schaefer wants to match Wilder against Price-Thompson winner

wilder3By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was hoping to match rising heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) in a fight against Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) next, but Schaefer has learned that heavyweight David Price, who was knocked out in the 2nd round by Thompson last month, has a rematch clause with him and he plans on using it to face him next. As such, Schaefer wants to match Wilder against the Thompson-Price winner.

Schaefer told RingTV “While we would want a fight with Tony Thompson, we have been made aware that Thompson has an immediate rematch obligation to David Price…Deontay would be happy to fight the winner of that immediate rematch.”

Deontay Wilder: I’ll be the next heavyweight champion of the world

wilder2By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) believes he’s on course to become the next heavyweight champion of the world unless somehow IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is upset in his mismatch on May 4th against Franceso Pianeta in Germany.

Wilder, 6’7”, is in the process of possibly getting a shot against David Price conqueror Tony Thompson after Wilder struck out in attempting to get British heavyweight Tyson Fury to face him.

Wilder said on his social media site, “I’ll float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, [and] definitely no one hits like the Bronze B; the next heavy champ of the world will soon be me.”

Schaefer: We’ll have Deontay Wilder fight Tony Thompson in Alabama

wilder23By Scott Gilfoid: If David Price wants to avenge his 2nd round knockout loss to #1 IBF Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) then he had better try and snatch him up really quick to sign for a fight because the powerful Golden Boy Promotions is in the process of booking Thompson for a fight against the talented heavyweight puncher #9 WBA Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) in the near future in a fight that will be staged in Wilder’s home state of Alabama.

Schaefer said last Saturday night, “We believe Deontay Wilder is ready as well. We’d like to put him with the guy that beat David Price; Thompson. And so we’ll look and have them fight from Alabama, but I think Deontay Wilder is an exciting young heavyweight prospect in the United States.”

Schaefer wants to match Deontay Wilder vs. Tony Thompson on CBS

wilder5By Scott Gilfoid: If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer gets his way he’ll be looking to match his talented undefeated heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) against #9 IBF Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) in a fight that would be televised on CBS so that more American boxing fans can see the 6’7” Wilder, according to ESPN.

With his fights limited to the premium channel Showtime, it keeps a lot of American fans from getting a glimpse of the young knockout talent, but Schaefer would like to change that if possible so that more fans can see Wilder in action.

Fury: David Price was exposed as a fraud by Tony Thompson

price46By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) took the opportunity at the latest press conference to hype his upcoming fight next month to get some digs in on his nemesis David Price, who recently was stopped in the 2nd round by 41-year-old Tony Thompson last month. Fury feels Price’s limitations as a heavyweight was exposed by Thompson, although Fury says he does think Price can come back from the defeat to accomplish whatever.

Fury said “I told you it [Price getting knocked out] was going to happen all along. It just shows you how rubbish he really was. He’s a fraud and he’s been exposed. This guy [Thompson] is trying to make money before he retires. I’m sure after [Steve] Cunningham, if he hasn’t been beat, I’d like to take Thompson for my record. I don’t like the idea of him coming over here [to the UK] and taking out the top prospect, and going back to American and bragging about it to everybody.
