WBA orders Thurman-Porter winner to face Mosley- Avanesyan winner

mosleyBy Jeff Aranow: The World Boxing Association has ordered the winner of the June 25 fight between WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and “Showtime” Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) to face the winner of the May 28 fight between interim WBA welterweight champion David Avanesyan (21-1-1, 11 KOs) and #3 WBA Shane Mosley (49-9-1, 41 KOs).

If the winner of the Thurman vs. Porter fight had hopes of getting a bigger name for their next fight, they’re going to be pretty much handcuffed by having to fight the winner of the Mosley vs. Avanesyan fight due to the WBA ordering that.

Mosley used to be a big name at one time, but he’s now nearing 45, he clearly isn’t a huge name in the 147lb division among the younger fans of the sport.

Shane Mosley vs. David Avanesyan on May 28 in Glendale, Arizona

mosley5By Dan Ambrose: #3 WBA “Sugar” Shane Mosley (49-9-1, 41 KOs) will be facing #1 WBA Avanesyan (21-1-1, 11 KOs) for the interim WBA welterweight title on May 28 on CBS Sports Net at the Gila river Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Mosley hasn’t done much to deserve a fight for the interim WBA 147lb title other than beating 42-year-old Ricardo Mayorga in September 2015 in beating the overweight and ring rusty fighter by a 6th round knockout. In Mosley’s last fight, he stopped little known 2nd tier fighter Patrick Lopez by a 10th round knockout last December.

Sullivan Barrera will be a difficult fight for Andre Ward

barreraBy Jeff Aranow: Shane Mosley sees Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) having a hard time with light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) this month in their fight on March 26 on HBO Boxing at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California.

Ward is no longer fighting in the super middleweight division, as he’s moving up to the full weight for the 175lb division for this fight against Barrera, and he’s facing one of the hardest hitters in the division.

Mosley: Khan is making a mistake in bulking up

mosley100By Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Sugar Shane Mosley thinks Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is going about it the wrong way in getting ready for his title shot against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view.

Khan, 29, has been bulking up since the 155lb catch-weight fight with the Mexican star Canelo was first announced several weeks ago for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khan proudly states that he’s going to be 165lbs by the time he finishes bulking up. Khan believes that the added weight will make him more competitive with Canelo, who might come into the fight in the 170s or 180s.

We’ll likely never know for sure if Canelo chooses not to be weighed by the HBO stage before he steps inside the ring against Khan. The best policy would be for Khan to assume that Canelo will be in the 180s, because he looked bigger than he’s ever looked before in his last fight in November against Miguel Cotto. Canelo’s previous high weight was 175, but he looked bigger than that against Cotto.

Mosley impressed with Shawn Porter’s punching power

mosley5By Dan Ambrose: After sparring seven rounds with former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) this past week, 44-year-old Shane Mosley came away from the experience very impressed with Porter’s punching power, aggression and overall talent.

Mosley sees the 28-year-old Porter as a very tough challenger for WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) to deal with in their fight on March 12 on Premier Boxing Champions on CBS at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Mosley: Canelo vs. Golovkin is an even fight

1-CANELO ALVAREZ 05By Dan Ambrose: 44-year-old Shane Mosley believes that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) has the skills, speed and punching power to fight unbeaten Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) on even terms if/when the two of them face each other one of these days.

Mosley was soundly beaten by a 21-year-old Canelo four years ago in 2012 in losing by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110. Mosley looked like a lightweight in the ring against a middleweight in that fight, and it’s not surprising that he lost by a one-sided fight.

Shane Mosley: The Sugar Of My Generation

mosleyBy Jacob Rodriguez: When one hears the alias “Sugar” being adopted by a fighter, immediately high levels of performance are expected of that fighter. Many boxers have adorned themselves with the moniker, but only few have lived up to the true essence of the name.

The “Sugar” from the 40s and 50s is often regarded by boxing experts as the greatest pound for pound boxer to have ever lived. “Sugar” Ray Robinson is the standard bearer by which all boxers considering the alias should live up to. After seeing Ray in one his amateur fights, sportswriter Jack Case described him as a “sweet fighter” and referred to him as “Sugar Ray”.

Boxing fans of the time were able to witness a rare combination of athleticism, grace, skill-fullness, and thunderous punching power that Ray Robinson used to bring to life “the sweet science” as he defeated great boxers like Lamotta, Fulmer, Armstrong, and Gavilan.

Shane Mosley vs. Patrick Lopez on December 17th

mosleyBy Dan Ambrose: 44-year-old Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) will be back in the ring this month to face little known light welterweight Patrick Lopez (23-5-1, 14 KOs) on December 17th in a scheduled 10 round fight at the Arena Roberto Duran in Panama City, Panama, says Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Mosley had been doing a lot of talking lately about possibly fighting for a world title against WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith, but it looks like that fight didn’t materialize.

All Mosley has to show for himself is a fight against Lopez, and that has to be disappointing because this isn’t a big fight or even close to a big fight. It’s just a stay busy fight for Mosley.

Mosley: Cotto beats Canelo

cotto (13)By Dan Ambrose: Sugar Shane Mosley is picking WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) to send challenger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) to his second defeat of his career in their fight on November 21st on HBO PPV.

Mosley, 44, has lost to both fighters in the past, but he feels that Cotto has more dimensions to his game than the 25-year-old Canelo, and he notes that Cotto is better at adapting than the Mexican Canelo. Mosley watched how both fighters dealt with the same fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the past, and he saw that Canelo wasn’t able to adapt at all against Mayweather.
