Sergio Martinez: Who has he beaten?

martinez66By Jermill Pennington: Sergio Maravilla Martinez (51-2-2) in recent years has been regarded as one of the top 5 boxers in the world. Since his loss to Paul Williams in 2009 Martinez has gone on a 7 fight win streak beating many of the world’s top middle weights. On June 7th Martinez is scheduled to fight Miguel Cotto (38-4-2) at a catch weight of 159 pounds for the WBC middle weight title in the Madison Square Garden arena.

Martinez over the years has gained a stigma for being a feared and avoided fighter. Many say that Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself has even avoided Martinez. For the bout that will take place on June 7th Miguel Cotto is coming in as a substantial underdog by the odds makers and even more so in the minds of fans. Through my observation it seems that many believe Cotto has once again bitten of more than he can chew. Maybe putting too much stock in his newly found fountain of youth, which for Cotto means throwing the left hook.

The future implications of Cotto-Martinez

cotto56678By Diarmuid Sherry: On the 7th June, Miguel Cotto challenges Sergio Martinez for the right to be the Middleweight Champion, and with it the distinction of being the first Puerto Rican fighter to win world titles in 4 different divisions. Whatever happens, and whoever wins, this fight is good for boxing, however there is massive potential for money-spinning future fights depending on the winner of this fight.

Miguel Cotto is the most marketable free agent there is in the sport today. He has no ties to promotional or television companies so therefore can work on what is best for his career without a hindrance. Cotto turned downed a guaranteed $10 million to face Canelo Alvarez in March, to instead face Martinez for less money, but for the chance of achieving a historic feat.

Cotto’s going to expose Sergio Martinez, says Roach

roach32432By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach can’t see where WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) has any real advantage over his fighter Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) except in one area and that athleticism. Roach rates Cotto as being stronger, faster, better defensively, more skilled and smarter. Roach seems to have created a superman in the short amount of time that he’s been working on rebuilding the 33-year-old Cotto, but we still don’t know whether he’s any better than he ever was.

We’re going to find out on June 7th when he fights Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden. If Roach is correct about Cotto being a whole new fighter, then we could see him beat Sergio somehow. But if Roach has just been talking in order to pump Cotto up and make himself look better in the process, we’re about to find that out as well.

Roach predicts Cotto win over Sergio Martinez by 4th round knockout

roach5637By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t see Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) having any problems with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) in their fight on June 7th at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Roach feels that he’s rejuvenated the 33-year-old Cotto, and that he’ll blast Sergio out in just 4 rounds when the two fighters go at it in their HBO pay-per-view televised fight. So in other words, Sergio will last just one more round than Cotto’s last opponent Delvin Rodriguez did in his fight with Cotto last October.

Sergio Martinez says loss to Antonio Margarito improved him

martinez--3By Dan Ambrose: Earlier in his career, Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) fought a young Antonio Margarito in 2000 in a fight that Sergio was overwhelmed by Margarito’s high volume attack and taken out in 7 rounds of a mostly one-sided fight.

This was before Martinez had adopted a Roy Jones Jr. style of fighting that employs a lot of movement. Not long after his loss to Margarito, Sergio changed his fighting style to where it is now with him using movement, fast shots, and an in and out style of fighting to frustrate slow plodding type fighters.

Roach’s attempts at rejuvenating Cotto to beat Sergio Martinez are doomed for failure

roach013By Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach thinks he’s taken former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) in reverse mode in finding Ponce de Leon’s fountain of youth for Cotto to drink from so that it can restore his waning youth for important fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) in less than 2 weeks from now on June 7th, but I have a feeling that Cotto hasn’t been restored to his once youthful self.

I believe that Roach is heading Cotto down the path of bitter defeat when he enters the ring against the tough transplanted Argentinian fighter at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Cotto vs. Martinez: My Two Cents

cotto667Writer’s Note: This article is an abbreviated one, for the full article, please visit: http://a-neutral-corner.blogspot.ca/2014/05/my-two-cents-martinez-vs-cotto.html

By Jay McIntyre: A year ago nobody would have used the names Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) and Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) in the same sentence, but on June 7th, 2014, they will be stepping through the ropes of the same ring in Madison Square Garden. That’s boxing. Don’t read too much into it, instead just enjoy it. It’s not often that we get to see two incredible boxers match their wits and skill against one another due to promotional rivalries and protective managers.

Sergio Martinez, an established champion and ranked #7 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, must defend his crown against the dangerous usurper that is Miguel Cotto. Aside from his bout against Delvin Rodriguez, Miguel Cotto has been fighting in championship fights since 2005.

Martinez vs. Cotto: Who will be the best?

cotto56678By Yannis Mihanos: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 knockouts) recently spoke about being an A-side fighter and current WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) being the B-side in their upcoming fight on June 7th at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Tormented by injuries (2 knee operations), Martinez now claims he is back at full form and ready to set the record straight; his last fight over a year ago against Martin Murray was a disappointment for Martinez, but he still managed to come out victorious with a close 12 round unanimous decision win.

Cotto says 159 lb. catch-weight was Sergio Martinez’s teams idea

cotto55By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) is saying that it wasn’t him that came up with the idea of fighting at a catch weight of 159 lbs. for his fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) on June 7th. Cotto says it was Martinez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowitcz that floated the idea, and they just went with what he said.

“That came from Sampson,” Cotto said in talking about 159lb catch-weight. “The first thing he said when we sat at the table was, ‘Sergio can’t run like before anymore and he wants to make his weight. He’s not going to be able to do less than 159 pounds.’ That was a petition from them, not us.”

Roach sees Cotto having his way with Sergio Martinez

CottoMartinez-headeBy Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO’s) has got one of the toughest fights of his career coming up on June 7th against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) in their catch-weight fight at 159 lbs. Cotto’s trainer Roach is talking about Cotto having added more bulk for this fight, and Roach believes he’s going to be the stronger guy each time he’s able to get in close to Martinez on June 7th. I bet.

Cotto will be a pumped up middleweight in this fight, and not the real thing. There is a difference, you know. Roach may have put weight on Cotto, but he’s still little more than a light welterweight at heart because that’s where he started his career at and that’s what his frame is built for.
