Marquez easily beats Alvarado; Postol dominates Aydin

marquez7aBy Jim Dower: In a mostly one-sided fight, 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) easily defeated Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KO’s) in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in a WBO welterweight eliminator bout at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. The final judges scored were 117-109, 117-109 and 119-109. Marquez dropped Alvarado in the 8th. In the 9th, Alvarado returned the favor by knocking Marquez down in the 9th.

The fight was one-sided throughout as Alvarado was unable to land his single power shots due to the head and body movement of Marquez. Alvarado needed to throw combinations, but he spent most of the fight just throwing one punch at a time. Even with his jabs, Alvarado was throwing one jab instead of doubling it up.

Aydin vs. Postol on 5/17; winner becomes Danny Garcia’s WBC mandatory challenger

aydin12By Dan Ambrose: #1 WBC Viktor Postol (25-0, 10 KO’s) and #2 WBC Selcuk Aydin (26-2, 19 KO’s) will be facing each other in a WBC 140lb eliminator bout on May 17th on the undercard of the HBO televised fight card between Mike Alvarado and Juan Manuel Marquez at the Forum in Inglewood, California. While casual boxing fans in the U.S may not be familiar with Postol, they familiar with Aydin, as his defeats to Jesus Soto Karass and Robert Guerrero have been televised.

Aydin looked incredibly poor in both fights, and it’s strange that the World Boxing Council would still have Aydin so highly ranked after how badly he was beaten in both of those fights.

Aydin stops Corley

aydin654By Jim Dower: 30-year-old former WBC Silver welterweight champion Selcuk Aydin (26-2, 19 KO’s) battered and stopped 39-year-old journeyman DeMarcus Corley (39-21-1, 23 KO’s) in the 4th round on Friday night to capture the vacant WBC Mediterranean light welterweight title at the Atatürk Spor Salonu, Tekirdag, Turkey.

After the 4th round, Corley quit on his stool rather than come out for the 5th round.

It had been 11 months since Corley last fought, and he didn’t show the stamina and conditioning that he had in the past. Corley stood directly in front of Aydin in all four rounds, and was getting hit with some big shots.

Solis defeats Larsen; Aydin beats Lauri; Chagaev destroys Sheppard

solis33By Jim Dower: Looking a slimmer than usual, IBF Inter-Continental heavyweight champion Odlanier Solis (19-1, 12 KO’s) put in a workmanlike performance tonight in defeating the raw but powerful Leif Larsen (17-1, 14 KO’s) by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision at the Universal Hall in Berlin, Germany.

The final judges’ scores were 116-112, 115-114, 117-111. Solis did his best work in the first six rounds, showing good hand speed, but limited power. In the second half of the fight, Solis seemed to tire and he ended up looking really sloppy in his performance.

Soto-Karass had easier time with Aydin than Guerrero

aydin12By Allan Fox: After watching Jesus Soto-Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) easily beat Selcuk Aydin (23-2, 17 KO’s) last Saturday night in a 12 round majority decision victory, suddenly Robert Guerrero’s 12 round unanimous decision victory over Aydin isn’t looking so special now.

In watching those two fights, it’s clear that Soto-Karass has a much easier time against Aydin compared to Guerrero. Forget about the fact that Guerrero beat Aydin by a 12 round unanimous decision compared to the 12 round majority decision victory that Soto-Karass earned against Aydin.

Aydin needs to dump Adam Booth

aydin2By Scott Gilfoid: Welterweight knockout artist Selcuk Aydin (23-2, 17 KO’s) looked worse than he ever has before in losing by a 10 round majority decision to the good but VERY beatable Jesus Soto-Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Aydin looked completely lost with his new trainer Adam Booth.

Under Booth’s guidance, Aydin went from an exciting slugger to a cautious boxer/puncher, and he looked just awful in making that transformation. Aydin was much better before with his previous trainer, I think. I don’t know what Booth was trying to transform Aydin into, but sure didn’t work because he looked completely befuddled out there.

Soto-Karass defeats Aydin

soto-karassBy Jim Dower: Jesus Soto-Karass (27-8-3, 17 KO’s) showed his class tonight in beating the hard hitting Selcuk Aydin 23-2, 17 KO’s) by a 1- round majority decision at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the first fight for Aydin with his new trainer Adam Booth and it really showed.

Aydin looked confused in trying to box the taller Soto-Karass from the outside instead of plodding forward and slugging it out with his old style of fighting. The judges scored the fight 97-93, 97-93 and 95-95. In hindsight, Aydin would have been much better off had he fought using his old style of fighting where he would slug it out.

Selcuk Aydin vs. Jesus Soto-Karass on Saturday, 1/26 in Las Vegas

aydin4521345By Jason Kim: #3 WBC Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) will be trying to show improvement in his career this Saturday night against Jesus Soto-Karass (26-8-3, 17 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Aydin, 29, lost his last fight to Robert Guerrero last July in a 12 round unanimous decision loss and in doing so, Aydin lost his unbeaten record and his #1 ranking by the WBC in the welterweight division.

It was somewhat disappointing for Aydin because he had been passed over for ages by former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, and it seemed kind of sad to see Aydin beaten before getting a title shot. The only consolation was that his fight with Guerrero was for the interim WBC 147 pound title, but that’s a much different thing that fighting for a title.

Aydin vs. Soto-Karass, Matthysse vs. Dallas Jr. on 1/26

aydin4521345By Jason Kim: #3 WBC welterweight contender Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) will be fighting for the first time with new trainer Adam Booth on January 26h against Jesus Soto-Karass (26-8-3, 17 KO’s0 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Aydin, 29, lost his last fight to former three division world champion Robert Guerrero by a 12 round unanimous decision in July of last year. Although Aydin looked powerful with his shots, he looked incredibly raw for a fighter with six year of pro experience under his belt and he performed poorly other than when he was landing big power shots.

Maidana vs. Aydin possible for 2013; Rees & Barker added to Purdy-Jones card

Image: Maidana vs. Aydin possible for 2013; Rees & Barker added to Purdy-Jones cardBy Allan Fox: A welterweight clash between #2 WBA Marcos Maidana (32-3, 29 KO’s) and #3 WBC Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) is being talked about for early 2013, according to RingTV. Both Aydin and Maidana have open schedules as of right now, and it would make for an appealing fight for HBO due their exciting fighting styles.

Aydin, 29, lost his last fight to Robert Guerrero last July by a 12 round decision on HBO. Despite losing the fight, Aydin made it an interesting fight to watch due to his hard power shots that he kept hitting Guerrero with. However, in the end, Aydin didn’t have the boxing skills to pull off a win and ended up losing the fight.
