Schaefer: Canelo-Cotto still a possibility

Image: Schaefer: Canelo-Cotto still a possibilityBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that there’s a good chance that Miguel Cotto will wind up facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next instead of the logical choice of Alvarez facing Trout in a unification bout. Trout himself said won’t be surprised if Canelo and Golden Boy choose not to face him next.

Scahefer said at the Cotto-Trout press conference “The 154 pound division is very deep. We’ll sit down with Miguel. There’s a still a possibility we’ll see Canelo-Cotto fight. We’ll see if Trout is a possibility. There are other names at 154 we’re going to be looking at, whether it’s James Kirkland or Alfredo Angulo or any of these guys.”

Trout: GBP won’t let their “Golden Goose” Canelo fight me

Image: Trout: GBP won't let their "Golden Goose" Canelo fight meBy Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) laughed out loud when he was asked by the media if WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) would now fight him after Trout’s 12 round decision victory over Miguel Cotto last Saturday night. It was as if Trout was being asked an absurd question because he doesn’t see it happening, calling Canelo the “Golden Goose” for Golden Boy promotions.

Trout said this at the post fight press conference: “[My performance] I think with the fans it was [good], but with him [Canelo Alvarez] and his promoters [Golden Boy Promotions], I don’t think so. I think it was too good of a performance. They might not put him in there. I think they want to keep him [Alvarez] the Golden Goose, and a fight with me would be a risky one. Once the fans are behind me they can’t help but to make the fight happen.”

Trout may not get Canelo fight despite beating Cotto

Image: Trout may not get Canelo fight despite beating Cotto(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: In a perfect WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) would be the one that ends up meeting WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the ring on May 4th next, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen judging by the way Canelo chose not to speak with Trout on national television after his win over Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) tonight at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

Canelo chose to come to the fight hoping that Cotto would be the winner, but it didn’t work out that way unfortunately Alvarez. Cotto wasn’t able to close the distance to land his big power shots against the taller Trout. There’s little question that Cotto was the bigger puncher and the more exciting fighter. But this is boxing and it’s more than just who the bigger puncher is. Trout simply was the better fighter tonight and there’s not much Cotto or Canelo can do about it.

Canelo: I hope Cotto beats Trout

Image: Canelo: I hope Cotto beats Trout(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez took a huge risk by choosing not to fight this December to instead wait around for Golden Boy Promotions to lasso one of the three big names – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez – that he directed them to for his next fight date on May 4th. Alvarez lost four months of his career with that brilliant move.

By choosing not to fight in December, Canelo flushed down the toilet a big payday that he could have gotten against pretty much anyone that Golden Boy would dug up for him. They could have selected another light welterweight or another welterweight for Alvarez to fight and he’d have made big cash.

Canelo Alvarez might not be happy seeing Guerrero get Mayweather fight

Image: Canelo Alvarez might not be happy seeing Guerrero get Mayweather fightBy Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer makes a deal between his fighter WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 kO’s) for a fight in early next year, Schaefer could wind up stepping on the toes of his young star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who has recently told Golden Boy that he absolutely wants the Mayweather fight on May 4th of next year.

If Golden Boy wants to keep Alvarez happy they’re going to need to think hard before they look to put together a fight between Guerrero and Mayweather. Alvarez is only 22, and has a long career ahead of him, a lot longer than the time that Guerrero and Mayweather both have left.

Schaefer: Mayweather expected to pick from Cotto, Alvarez or Guerrero for next opponent

Image: Schaefer: Mayweather expected to pick from Cotto, Alvarez or Guerrero for next opponentBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will likely be selecting his next opponent from the following three fighters: Miguel Cotto, Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, Schaefer thinks that Guerrero is the one that will get the pick by Mayweather for his next fight.

It’s interesting that Cotto is still in the running for a fight with Mayweather because he already fought Mayweather last May and was beaten by a 12 round decision. It was thought that Mayweather would then move on.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to attend Cotto-Trout fight on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, NY

Image: Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to attend Cotto-Trout fight on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, NYBy Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) will reportedly be attending this Saturday’s fight between Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) and WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden, in New York, according to RingTV.

Alvarez already told his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions that he wants one of three big names – Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Sergio Martinez – for his next fight on May 4th next year. Alvarez even skipped a December fight date that he could have taken in order to wait around to try and land one of the three names on his list.

What’s Next for Boxing’s Superstars?

Image: What's Next for Boxing's Superstars?By Duke Pahulu: Before anything, let me state the three boxing superstars. They are Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto. Let’s start at the top. If history is correct, Floyd will be coming back to the ring on Cinco de Mayo 2013. Contrary to what his Uncle and Trainer Roger Mayweather suggested, they’re only two viable options for Floyd. One is Saul Canelo Alvarez and the other is Robert Guerrero. The sole reason being that both fighters are handled by Golden Boy which has done Floyd’s fights since splitting with Bob Arum several years ago.

Canelo would do big numbers because he’s a bigger star than Guerrero. Guerrero on the other hand is coming off a career win against Andre Berto. Floyd has a history of fighting foes coming off of career wins and Canelo’s last fight doesn’t constitute a big win.

Quintana wants Saul Alvarez on May 4th

Image: Quintana wants Saul Alvarez on May 4thBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (29-3, 23 KO’s) is hoping Golden Boy Promotions will set him up with a title shot against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on May 4th next year in the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo if Quintana can get by unbeaten prospect Keith Thurman (18-0, 17 KO’s) on Saturday night in their 10 round bout at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California, USA.

Quintana said this as quoted by RingTV “I told Oscar De La Hoya that…I want to fight Canelo on May 4. He’s a strong young champion, the best in the division, and the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry has always given boxing fans great fights.”

Should Floyd Mayweather fight Canelo Alvarez on May 5th?

Image: Should Floyd Mayweather fight Canelo Alvarez on May 5th?By Jordan V Marry: Undefeated Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KO’s) has made it abundantly clear that Floyd “Money” Mayweather (43-0, KO’s) is his #1 choice for his next bout, scheduled May 5, 2013.  The majority of boxing fans as well as writers consider this to be a tall order for the talented 22 year old and an overly optimistic expectation considering the fact that he has not done nearly enough to earn a shot at the pound for pound king based on his recent competition.

Alvarez gave 40 year old Shane Mosley the most brutal beating of his career and looked unstoppable during his 5 round destruction of light welterweight Josesito Lopez, but these fighters couldn’t show him anything close to what he would experience against the supremely skilled Mayweather.  And this is precisely why Money May needs to cash in on this PPV super fight now, before the bigger, younger, and much more powerful, Canelo becomes way too much for the aging Mayweather to handle.
