Canelo doubts Mayweather or Cotto will fight him on September 14th

canelo400By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) says he only has two weeks to decide on who’s going to be his next opponent on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo, 22, doesn’t think Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Miguel Cotto will choose to fight him next. He also recognizes that a fight against WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez isn’t possible after Martinez broke his left hand and injured his knee in his win over Martin Murray last April.

Two current most overrated fighters: Canelo Alvarez and Tyson Fury

canelo212by Bob Smith: Of all of the fighters currently trying to move their way up the ranks and to obtain championships and big paydays (no particular order) two strike me as the most overrated: Tyson Fury and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

First, let’s start with one ‘”fighter” hopefully all of us can agree is overrated – Tyson Fury. To be fair, he is a respectable 2nd rate fighter with wins over Derek Chisora and Kevin Johnson but he is nowhere near the level of either his hype or his self-perceptions. In his match with Steve Cunningham he behaved like a WWE clown with his touching of the gloves and hitting after the bell and still got knocked down within three rounds by a glorified cruiserweight who is at least six inches shorter and at least 30 pounds lighter than him.

Atlas sees Canelo fighting Cotto next, not Mayweather

canelo 03 (2)By Dan Ambrose: ESPN boxing analyst Teddy Atlas says he’s hearing that Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) will be the one that ends up facing WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) rather than Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) for Canelo’s next fight on September 14th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Atlas said to ESPN: “My sources tell me it will be Miguel Cotto [who faces Canelo next]. Floyd Mayweather is not looking to fight. Yes, it would be a huge money fight [Mayweather vs. Canelo], but Mayweather can make money in a lot of different places. Why take a risk with a much bigger guy like Alvarez. So what I understand, Alvarez-Cotto is a much better bet than waiting to see Alvarez-Mayweather.”

Espinosa optimistic Mayweather-Canelo will take place on September 14th

floyd62By Dan Ambrose: Showtime head of Sports Stephen Espinosa is optimistic that a mega pay per fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez can get made for September 14th on Showtime/CBS on the Mexican Independence Day holiday. Both Mayweather and Canelo are interested in the fight, so all that needs to take place in the negotiations for money, weight.

Espinosa said to ESPN’s Dan Rafael “I’m cautiously optimistic. There’s a lot of negotiating left to do, but often the biggest hurdle is convincing one fighter or the other to take the fight. That hurdle has been cleared. I truly believe Mayweather wants Canelo and that Canelo wants Mayweather, and that’s half the battle.”

Sulaiman: Canelo should wait a year before facing Mayweather

canelo02By Dan Ambrose: WBC president Jose Sulaiman wants WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) to wait until next year before he faces unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) in a mega fight. Sulaiman, who is really fond of the orange-haired Mexican fighter, doesn’t think he’s ready to beat the 36-year-old Mayweather right now, but if he waits until Mayweather is 37, Sulaiman thinks he’ll have a better chance at beating him.

Sulaiman said to the record.com.mx “Alvarez should wait two more fights before going against Mayweather. Canelo will be more experienced and Floyd will be another year older and it would be a competitive fight. At this time I do not advise it.”

Robert Garcia: Canelo should fight Mayweather Jr. at 147 if he wants the fight so bad

canelo4534By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia doesn’t see any point in Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting the much heavier WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at 154 because he sees that as being too much of an advantage for Canelo because he’s so much heavier than Mayweather and stronger than him.

Garcia sees Canelo – and Sergio Martinez – as being guys in a bigger weight class and if they want to fight Mayweather so badly, then they should melt down and fight him at 147 instead of trying to get him to come up to their weight classes.

Cotto looking for $10 million for Canelo fight

cotto3By Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions wants Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) to step in and fight WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) on September 14th then they’re going to have to give Cotto a nice payday.

According to fightnews.com, Cotto is eying a payday of $10 million for a Canelo fight for what would be a pay per view bout if the fight takes place.

Considering that Canelo has never head-lined a PPV bout before and hasn’t proven himself yet as a PPV draw, it’s questionable whether a Cotto-Canelo bout would draw enough PPV buys for Cotto to get a $10 million guaranteed payday.

Canelo vs. Cotto is the backup plan if Mayweather won’t face Saul

cotto5By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions is looking to have former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30 KO’s) ready to go on September 14th to face their highly hyped fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) if Floyd Mayweather Jr. fails to agree to face Canelo on that date.

That’s the fight that Golden Boy wants to put together, but Mayweather isn’t saying whether he’ll agree to face the much heavier Canelo, who came into his last fighting weighing 172 lbs against WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.

Schaefer to start working on Canelo-Mayweather fight this week

floyd#31By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to be starting the wheels in motion this week for a September 14th fight between his fighter WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), even though Mayweather hasn’t asked him too. Schaefer wants the fight for Canelo and Golden Boy.

Schaefer told Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com “I’ll be meeting this week with Floyd’s adviser and we will start having conversations. I know that Floyd is the kind of fighter who doesn’t turn down anyone. He’s always fought anyone and everyone and I know that with Canelo, that’s the fight he really wants.”

Mayweather-Canelo: Showtime needs this fight more than Mayweather does

canelo11By Dan Ambrose: It’s pretty clear that Showtime would love for WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) to fight the heavier WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alavarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in his next fight on September 14th on pay per view.

Steve Kim is right in saying that it’s Showtime that needs this fight much more than Mayweather. He’s got his guaranteed cash and he’s going to make big bank no matter who he faces in his next five fights.
