Canelo Alvarez versus Floyd Mayweather: A risky fight for Golden Boy to make

canelo443By Dallas Orysiuk: There is no doubt that a fight between Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would be huge, especially on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day on September 14th. Alvarez is undefeated with a record of 42-0-1 (30 KOs) meanwhile Mayweather holds an undefeated record of 44-0-0 (26 KOs) against far greater opposition.

Floyd Mayweather has beaten the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, and Robert Guerrero to name a few. Meanwhile Alvarez has been pampered up until his previous fight, fighting tomato cans, cab drivers, blown up welterweights and fighters well past their prime.

In his most recent victory, Canelo impressed fans by giving Austin Trout his first loss.

Mayweather vs. Canelo: Yes, it will happen

floyd#900By Mauricio Carranza: Believe it or not the fight between WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen. Believe me, it’s just matter of time, I can guarantee it. First off, we need to understand Maywether is a very smart fighter and an even smarter business man. He understands exactly how the “business” of boxing work. There is risk and reward.

The risk being fighting a strong bigger opponent with good hand speed and very dangerous right hand, and please understand when I say bigger I mean frame-wise because Canelo might be an inch taller than Floyd if that.

Canelo looking for a new strength and conditioning coach for September fight

alvarez45By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is reportedly looking for a strength and conditioning coach to help improve his stamina before his September 14th fight against an opponent still to be determined.

According to Fighthype.com, Canelo’s team is thinking about adding either Angel Heredia, the strength coach for Juan Manuel Marquez, or Alex Ariza, the strength coach for Manny Pacquiao.

Whether Canelo can get either of those guys is still unclear, but what is clear is that he needs a conditioning coach to work his stamina because he’s looked exhausted by the 5th rounds in his fights against Shane Mosley and Austin Trout.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: Are there any doubts about his status?

floyd#705By Babatis Banda: Putting the accusations aside, does anybody out there doubt that Mayweather is the best P4P fighter today? Does anybody out there doubt that Floyd Mayweather Junior is the most gifted fighter this era has witnessed?

Does anyone out there doubt that Mayweather Junior has always made easy work of his opponents? Does anybody out there surely doubt that Mayweather is a class above the rest?

I seem to have a feeling that there is serious luck of competition out there for Floyd Mayweather Jnr, such that whoever he fights, some section of the fans will always trash his opposition looking at the ease at which he beats them. Do not be fooled, all these fighters Mayweather is beating are looking good going into the fight.

De La Hoya: Canelo is not Guerrero; Mayweather is not invincible

floyd#700By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) is ripe to be picked off by De La Hoya’s red-haired, 22-year-old, 172 pound WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in September if Mayweather would only agree to the fight.

De La Hoya seems to be getting impatient with Mayweather not readily accepting the fight with the light heavyweight-sized Canelo. De La Hoya wants Mayweather to sign for the fight because he feels he’s got someone that can finally beat him. Granted, Canelo outweighs Mayweather by close to 30 pounds but that’s besides the point.

Chavez Jr. beats Canelo with ease

chavez45By Dan Ambrose: A match-up that would draw a huge amount of interest in the boxing world is a fight between former WBC middleweight champion and the current WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This fight is a no-brainer in that it would create huge pay per view ratings if it were scheduled on one of the Mexican holidays like Cinco de Mayo where they could take advantage of a huge Mexican population enjoying the holiday festivities.

Unfortunately it may never happen despite Chavez Jr. and his promoters at Top Rank really wanting the fight. Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo, are cool to the idea of matching him against the heavier and much more active Chavez Jr. Canelo comes into his fights weighing in the lower 170s, whereas Chavez Jr. comes into his fights weighing in the lower 180s up to 190.

Matthysse a better opponent for Mayweather than Canelo

matthysse600(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. is looking for a good opponent for his September 14th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, he needs to think hard about selecting WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse for that fight instead of WBA/WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The reason to choose Matthysse is because he fights a lot closer to Mayweather’s natural weight of 146-150 lbs. than the 172 lb. Canelo. Mayweather won’t have to worry about Matthysse rehydrating up in weight 20-25 lbs, and he won’t have to fight a light heavyweight.

Schaefer insists he’s making progress with Mayweather-Canelo negotiations

canelo4543By Dan Ambrose: Dan Rafael reports that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that he’s making good progress on a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and that the talk of the fight taking place at 147 or a catchweight is totally incorrect.

Rafael said on his twitter: “Schaefer: All good, working on the fight. So far so good. It’s amazing how some of these other (sites) are spreading all these wrong stories. Schaefer emailed me, said as he works on Floyd-Canelo reports Floyd insists ‘on 147 & Canelo would be OK with a catch weight, it’s all BS.’”

Floyd Sr: Canelo has to fight at 147 if he wants Floyd Jr. fight

canelo54By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. said that if WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wants a fight against Floyd Jr. in September then he’s going to have to come in at 147 lbs at the weigh-in the day before the fight.

If Canelo can’t make weight then he doesn’t get the fight. It’s as simple as that. Floyd Sr. suspects Canelo will rehydrate up to 170 lbs, and he doesn’t want his son fighting a light heavyweight-sized fighter, even though he still thinks Floyd Jr. can beat him. But he does see the weight as potentially causing Floyd Jr. problems.

Canelo could pick up WBA strap in Panama

alvarez452By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez may end up having to travel to Panama to pick up his World Boxing Association 154 lb. title he won against former WBA champion Austin Trout last month at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

According to fightnews.com, the WBA executive vice president Gilberto Mendoza Jr. is waiting to find out what date Canelo will be coming to Panama City to pick up the WBA strap.

Surprisingly, the WBA still hasn’t’ stripped WBA Super World junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. of his title despite the fact that he hasn’t defended the title in over a year since he defeated former WBA champion Miguel Cotto last year in May. I wonder what the WBA is waiting for.
