Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGG

Image: Monroe picks Canelo over Golovkin, says he’d be too fast for GGGBy Dan Ambrose: Despite being dominated and bludgeoned into quitting on his feet in the 6th round, #2 WBA Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he thinks that former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) would defeat IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) if they were to face each other right now.

Monroe picks Canelo to beat Golovkin because he feels that Canelo has the better hand speed than GGG, and he sees Canelo’s power as being very good as well. Monroe does think that Golovkin would have an edge over Miguel Cotto, at least in terms of punching power.

WBC President to allow Canelo-Cotto fight if they sign contract to defend against Golovkin

Image: WBC President to allow Canelo-Cotto fight if they sign contract to defend against GolovkinBy Dan Ambrose: WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman will reportedly give the green light to a fight this year between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, as long as they both sign a contract stating that the winner of the Canelo-Cotto fight will face WBC interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin next.

Cotto is taking a voluntary title defense against #6 WBC Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) on June 6th next month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. If Cotto gets past Geale in their 157 pound catch-weight fight, he’s supposed to be defending his WBC title against Golovkin, his mandatory next.

Why Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin’s next opponent should be Erislandy Lara

Image: Why Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin's next opponent should be Erislandy LaraBy David Alexander: Last night, IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) defeated and scored a TKO victory against challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in Inglewood, California. A tune up fight for GGG, the match wasn’t a surprising outcome considering Golovkin was a heavy favorite coming in. Against a slick and southpaw fighter, Golovkin handled with ease a boxer that moves around a lot and uses his movement.

Considering that Monroe Jr. isn’t in the same class as GGG, yesterday’s fight magnifying that, Golovkin ahould consider a fight against Erislandy Lara in September or November.

Canelo: I don’t see any real competition at 160

canelo7657By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) came out of the woodwork last night following IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s superb 6th round knockout victory over Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) in Inglewood, California.

Canelo said that when he does move up to the 160 pound division, he’ll be taking on the top fighters, but he doesn’t see anyone that can compete with him. Canelo didn’t mention any names, but obviously he was including the likes of Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin, Andy Lee, Billy Joe Saunders and Daniel Jacobs. Those are some tough middleweights, and clearly all better than the guy that Canelo just beat a week ago in James Kirkland.

Golovkin: I’m ready for Canelo and Cotto right now!

1-GGG (2)By Dan Ambrose: After blasting out the hapless Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) last Saturday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California, IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) pronounced that he’s ready for WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) right now, not far off into the future once these two fighters feel that there’s sufficient interest in a fight against Golovkin.

“No. Not for the future. I’m ready right now! I’m ready for Canelo and Cotto,” Golovkin said after last night’s 6th round demolition of the 28-year-old Monroe.

Golovkin said after the fight that he wants a unification fight against one of the middleweight champions if he can’t get a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto.

Canelo to challenge Mayweather for September 12th Mexican Independence Day date

Image: Canelo to challenge Mayweather for September 12th Mexican Independence Day dateBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) plans on challenging boxing’s No.1 pay-per-view attraction Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) for the Mexican Independence Day date on September 12th, according to his manager/coach Eddy Reynoso.

They don’t have an opponent picked out yet for the 24-year-old Canelo, but Lucas Matthysse and Miguel Cotto are two of the possibilities. Matthysse fights at 140, whereas Canelo is basically a middleweight due to him fighting at 155 recently in the middleweight division, but against junior middleweights.

Atlas: Let’s not mistake Canelo for Marvin Hagler

Image: Atlas: Let's not mistake Canelo for Marvin HaglerBy Dan Ambrose: Since his 3rd round stoppage win over an over-matched and badly rusty James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) in their fight this month, former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has been crowned as boxing’s next superstar fighter by many of his fans. But one person who isn’t ready to give the 24-year-old Mexican fighter the keys to the kingdom is ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas.

Atlas feels what the red-headed Canelo accomplished wasn’t that big of a deal because of how flawed a fighter that Kirkland was going into the fight. Atlas thinks that Kirkland was the prefect guy to make Canelo look good due to Kirkland’s poor defensive skills, and his fragile chin.

Sanchez wants Golovkin vs. Canelo in 2016 on Cinco de Mayo

LA-Boxing-WKOTBy Dan Ambrose: IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez wants Golovkin and former WBA/WBC 154 pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) to face each other in 2016 on either Cinco de Mayo in May or during the Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. Sanchez doesn’t agree with Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya that the Canelo-Golovkin fight should take place two years from now.

Sanchez feels that the fight should take place while both guys are on their way up rather than after they’ve both leveled off. You can make an argument that both fighters are likely as good as they’ll ever be.

Boxing updates

1-CaneloKirklandFiesta_Hoganphotos6By Bill Gabay: It’s been over a week since the so-called “Fight of the Century” where Floyd “Money” Mayweather defeated Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao via unanimous decision. Many were disappointed with the lack of fireworks in the match. Perhaps even more were disappointed with the outcome as the “People’s Champ” was beaten, and convincingly, by the “bad guy”.

For anyone who follows the sport of Boxing, it was well-known that Mayweather was not going to engage Pacquiao but instead use his superior technical skills and strategy to get the win.
