Roach: Cotto-Canelo winner should fight Golovkin down the line

Image: Roach: Cotto-Canelo winner should fight Golovkin down the lineBy Dan Ambrose: Freddie Roach, the trainer for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) says that winner of the November 21st fight between Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) will eventually get around to fighting the WBC mandatory challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in the future.

Roach wouldn’t say when that time will be. All he could do is say that the winner of the Cotto vs. Canelo fight will eventually fight Golovkin in the future. Unfortunately for Golovkin, this ties in with what Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has been saying. De La Hoya says he doesn’t know what’s going to happen with the Cotto-Canelo fight.

Canelo doesn’t think Cotto has an experience advantage over him

Image: Canelo doesn’t think Cotto has an experience advantage over himBy Dan Ambrose: When you look at the resumes of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) what immediately jumps out at you is the experience advantage that the 34-year-old Cotto has over the 25-year-old Canelo in terms of the opposition he’s faced during his career.

Canelo doesn’t believe that Cotto has an experience advantage over him despite him having been a pro career that has lasted five years shorter. Cotto had a long and successful amateur career, whereas Canelo didn’t have one.

De La Hoya says there could be Cotto-Canelo trilogy; hints that Golovkin fight not happening soon

Image: De La Hoya says there could be Cotto-Canelo trilogy; hints that Golovkin fight not happening soonBy Dan Ambrose: While Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has said that he wants to put on the fights that the boxing fans want to see, one fight that they might not get a chance to see for a while is a match-up between Golden Boy flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs).

De La Hoya didn’t come right out and say that a fight between Canelo and Golovkin won’t be happening, but he did drop a very big hint that the fight probably won’t be happening anytime soon.

De La Hoya says 2.5 million fans won’t see boxing again after Mayweather-Pacquiao fight

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao last May turned off 2.5 million new boxing fans, who he feels will never come back to watch another boxing event due to De La Hoya believing that the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight failed to provide the action and excitement that it was originally billed as potentially supplying. For De La Hoya, it obviously hits him hard if the casual fans don’t come back to watch future pay-per-view fights, because he promotes a lot of fights, and it will be bad if the fan don’t come back.

“Pacquiao-Mayweather didn’t live up to expectations whatsoever,” De La Hoya said to Fighthype.com. “You had 2.5 million people, new customers, disappointed. They wanted to see a fight, and now these are never going to want to see boxing again because of that fight. So that’s what I have a problem with. Now I’m speaking as a promoter. I love fights. I love action. I want to see an action fight. That’s what I’m going to see on November 21st [with Canelo vs. Cotto],” De La Hoya said.

Cotto: My brother put Canelo in a bad position at 135lbs

Image: Cotto: My brother put Canelo in a bad position at 135lbsBy Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) reminded the boxing media about an event that took place give years ago when his little brother Jose Miguel Cotto had Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) badly hurt and basically out on his feet give years ago in the 1st round in their fight in 2010. Jose hurt Canelo with a hard right hand that had him stunned. He then unloaded everything but the kitchen sink on Canelo while trying to finish him off, but unfortunately for Jose, he smothered his own work by standing too close to Canelo and he was unable to finish him off.

At the time of the fight, Jose was a 135lb lightweight, while Canelo was a hulking welterweight. Canelo was more like junior middleweight at the time of the fight. He was 20-years-old at the time.

Canelo speaks about the Golovkin fight, says “I’m not afraid of anybody”

Image: Canelo speaks about the Golovkin fight, says “I’m not afraid of anybody”By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez told the media this week that if he’s mandated to fight IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in the near future after his bout against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto then that’s something he’ll explore and think about. But Canelo says he’s not afraid to fight anybody in the sport despite the fact that Canelo hasn’t elected to fight Golovkin as of yet.

“If that’s something that was mandated, then we’ll take it serious,” Canelo said to media. “After this fight [against Cotto], we’ll deal with it. I’m not afraid of anybody.”

“We think it would be good for him [Ward], a showcase pay-per-view, it could be good for the pay-per-view and he showed interest in being on the undercard,” Michael Yorkmark, CEO of Roc Nation, told ESPN Deportes.

With his red hair and freckles, baby-faced Canelo Alvarez may not appear to be your typical Mexican warrior. However, one look at the hard-hitting former WBC junior middleweight champion in the ring makes it clear that he is following firmly in the footsteps of Mexican greats such as Barrera, Morales, Sanchez, and Chavez. This makes him not only one of the most popular young fighters in his home country, but one in demand around the entire Latino fight community.

De La Hoya: Canelo will be the No.1 fighter in boxing for the next 10 years if he beats Cotto

canelo100(Photo credit: World Boxing Council) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s fight against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) is more important for Canelo than his bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, because if Canelo beats Cotto, it will take Canelo to the No.1 position in all of boxing and keep him there for the next 10 years, says De La Hoya.

Just how Canelo will be able to take the No.1 spot and keep himself there for a decade is unclear. Beating Cotto is one thing, but trying to stay on top of the sport for 10 full years is quite another thing completely. De La Hoya appears so desperate to have a fighter as popular as Mayweather in his Golden Boy stable that he’s making bold pronouncements about it ahead of time, as if that will do the trick by putting a suggestion in the minds of boxing fans. I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way.

Roach: Canelo is lazy and has stamina problems

canelo925(Photo credit: Gene Blevins – Hoganphotos/Roc Nation Sports/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) may have turned his career around with three straight wins since he defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. two years ago, but trainer Freddie Roach, who trains WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), still sees Canelo as lazy and someone with questionable stamina.

The young 25-year-old Canelo worked out at one of Roach’s gyms not too long ago, and Roach says he had reports that Canelo was lazy. I don’t know if this is something that can be changed. Usually when a fighter is lazy, they tend to stay that way rather than grow out of it.
