De La Hoya: Canelo is coming into his “Man strength!”

1-cotto-canelo-nyc (6)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is very high on his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) for his fight this Saturday night against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs). De La Hoya thinks that Canelo isn’t the same fighter that was beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and who struggled against Erislandy Lara just last year.

According to De La Hoya, Canelo is just now coming into his “man strength” at age 25. It’s unclear how his power would change that much from a year or two, but De La Hoya believes that Canelo is more powerful than he was before.

Is Cotto-Canelo still worth $59.99 asking price on HBO PPV?

1-cotto-canelo-nyc (4)By Chris Williams: Now that Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) no longer has the WBC middleweight title in his possession due to the World Boxing Council stripping him of the title earlier today, you have to ask yourself whether his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is worth the $59.99 asking price for it on HBO pay-per-view on Saturday night. I’m just saying.

For a lot of people, $59.99 is a lot of money. If Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya were willing to make it a complimentary fight for the boxing fans to see it for free on regular HBO, I think they’d be internally grateful. I can’t see De La Hoya making this move, of course. But beyond that, I think a drop in the asking price for the fight is in order now that Cotto no longer has the WBC middleweight title in his possession.

Mayweather: De La Hoya is just hoping Canelo beats Cotto

delahoya5By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could have a tough time this Saturday night trying to beat Miguel Cotto in their HBO televised fight on PPV. Mayweather sees Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya hoping that Canelo, 25, can get past Cotto.

Mayweather isn’t too happy with De La Hoya after some of the recent comments he made about him in an interview with Playboy Magazine. De La Hoya made light of Mayweather’s accomplishments in beating Canelo two years ago by saying that Canelo was weight drained at the time due to the 152lb catch-weight for the fight, and that Canelo was too young to be fighting a star like Mayweather.

Cotto refused to pay $300K to WBC, says Rafael

cotto5By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto was stripped of his WBC middleweight title earlier today for failing to abide by an agreement that he had with the sanctioning body. According to Dan Rafael, the World Boxing Council specifically stripped the 35-year-old Cotto for his failure to pay $300,000 in sanctioning fees in order for him to keep the WBC title.

Rafael says that #1 WBC mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin was paid $800,000 for a step aside fee so that Cotto could fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view. However, when Cotto was faced with paying an additional $300,000 to the WBC for the sanctioning fee, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back, according to Rafael.

WBC strips Miguel Cotto of 160lb title – Breaking news!

cotto (6)By Dan Ambrose: In a huge blow to this Saturday’s HBO pay-per-view fight between Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs), the World Boxing Council has reportedly stripped the 35-year-old Cotto of his WBC middleweight title for failing to follow their rules and regulations ahead of his fight this Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to the latest news, Cotto failed to pay the sanctioning fees that were originally agreed upon. The 25-year-old Canelo will still have the option to capture the now vacant WBC title if he wins the contest on Saturday, but Cotto cannot win the title back himself.

Canelo vs. Pacquiao possible for early 2016

1-CANELO ALVAREZ 05By Dan Ambrose: If Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) gets past WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this Saturday night, we could see Canelo facing former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao in his next fight. According to Lance Pugmire, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum spoke to him this week, saying that Canelo is now one of the guys that he’s interested in matching against Pacquiao.

“Bob Arum told me this week that Manny Pacquiao may be on the table for you,” Pugmire said to Canelo.

De La Hoya talks matching Canelo against Lemieux

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says he’s going to take a wait and see approach with his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) after his fight this Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) on HBO PPV.

De La Hoya isn’t sure if Canelo is ready to move up to the middleweight division to face guys like Golden Boy Promotions fighter David Lemieux, who recently was knocked out by Gennady Golovkin last month.

Roach predicts Canelo KO loss on Saturday

YouTube video

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach is predicting a knockout win for his fighter this Saturday night against Oscar De La Hoya’s No.1 gravy train money fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) on HBO PPV. Roach thinks that Cotto will hand De La Hoya’s red rooster his first knockout loss of his 10-year pro career and Roach is betting on it taking place.

Canelo, 25, has shown to have a pretty decent chin thus far in his career, but it’s difficult to really know how good it is because Canelo has faced only two good – but not great – punchers over the years in James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo.

Cotto 157.8 at 7-day weigh-in

cotto5By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) weighed in at 157.8lbs at his seven-day weigh-in for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Under normal circumstances, Cotto would already be on weight for the 160lb limit for the middleweight division, but due to his choice of having the fight take place at a catch-weight of 155lbs, he still needs to drop down another 2.8lbs to make weight by this Friday for the weigh-in on November 20th. It seems silly for Cotto and Canelo to be fighting at catch-weights, because it just looks bad and somehow cheapens their fights.

Roach: Cotto is going to kick Canelo’s backside

roach5By Dan Ambrose: According to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) is going to get his backside kicked on Saturday night when the two non-trash talking fighters go at it on HBO pay-per-view. Roach sees Cotto as being the more talented fighter of the two, and he’s even bet money on Cotto winning the fight.

Roach doesn’t say how much money he’s bet, but with Canelo being a 2:1 favorite in the fight, Roach can get a nice payday out of the fight if he bets some of his Manny Pacquiao money on Cotto.
