Cotto-Canelo: Do fans care about WBC title?

1-canelo-cotto (1)By Yannis Mihanos: Earlier this week the news spread that Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) has been stripped of his WBC middleweight title because he failed to pay the World Boxing Council’s $300,000 sanctioning fee in order for him to have the WBC title on the line for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight on HBO pay-per-view from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The news spread a bit of panic around, especially to the organizers and the TV channels for the Cotto vs. Canelo fight.

De La Hoya expecting huge PPV numbers for Cotto-Canelo

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (10)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is setting himself up for as huge disappointment on Saturday night with his belief that the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto fight will bring in a minimum of 1.5 million PPV buys on HBO. If the Cotto-Canelo fight bring in the type of PPV numbers that De La Hoya thinks it will be, the fight will wind up as the second highest PPV fight in history of the sport.

De La Hoya believes the fight can being in as much as 2.4 million buys on PPV. He also thinks that 1.5 to 2 million boxing fans will automatically purchase the fight on PPV, and then from there he predicts that the fight could get even more to pump up the sales to 2.4 million.

Golovkin anxious to fight again

1-golovkin-lem (5)

By Tim Fletcher: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) says all the talk about the clash between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) and Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) this Saturday night has him chomping at the bit wanting to get inside the ring as soon as possible so that he can start fighting again.

Golovkin is coming off of an impressive stoppage win over IF Middleweight champion David Lemieux last October in Golovkin’s first PPV fight on HBO, and he can’t wait to get another big fight.

Ideally, Golovkin would like to fight the winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unless someone like Canelo opts to take the fight out of pressure from the boxing public.

Floyd Sr: I might tell Mayweather to fight Cotto-Canelo winner

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (11)By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he’ll be watching this Saturday’s fight between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and he’ll be making a decision based on what he sees whether his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. should come out of retirement or not to face the winner of that fight.

Floyd Sr. already believes that Mayweather Jr. can beat Cotto and Canelo right now, but he wants to see them fight before he makes a decision whether to encourage Mayweather to take the winner or not.

De La Hoya would like to see his red rooster avenge his loss from two years ago in 2013, a fight in which Canelo was totally dominated in and badly exposed in getting totally outclassed.

Roach wants Mayweather for Cotto if he beats Canelo

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (14)By Dan Ambrose: Despite Floyd Mayweather Jr. being retired since September 12th following his 12 round decision win over Andre Berto, trainer Freddie Roach still thinks he’ll be coming back to face his fighter WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) if he can beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOS) this weekend in their fight on HBO PPV.

Mayweather would be taking a huge pay cut by facing Cotto rather than Manny Pacquiao, however, as there wouldn’t be as much interest from fans in seeing Mayweather fight Cotto a second time.

Cotto might not pay Golovkin $800K step aside fee

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (9)By Jim Dower: With Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) choosing not to pay the sanctioning fees of $300,000 to the World Boxing Council for his WBC middleweight title to be on the line for Cotto’s fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) this Saturday night in their fight on HBO PPV, it’s now unclear whether WBC interim 160lb champion Gennady Golovkin ( 34-0, 31 KOs) will be getting the $800,000 that he was supposed to be receiving for him to step aside so that the Cotto-Canelo fight could take place with the WBC title on the line.

Golovkin reportedly agreed to step aside for the Cotto vs. Canelo fight to take place despite the fact that he was the WBC mandatory challenger and it was he who should be fighting for the WBC title.

Canelo makes a lot of mistakes, Roach says

1-cotto-vs-alvarez (10)By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) is the underdog for his title defense this Saturday night against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cotto, 35, is the older and more experienced fighter of the two, but in this case the oddsmakers don’t believe that Cotto’s superior experience and his advanced age will be a positive thing for him. They see Canelo’s youth, hand speed, and punching being more of a positive for him than Cotto’s experience.
