Luis Ortiz possible for Canelo-Khan undercard

Image: Luis Ortiz possible for Canelo-Khan undercardBy Dan Ambrose: If interim WBA heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) can get past Tony Thompson (40-6, 27 KOs) in their fight next month on March 5, then he’ll be added to the May 7, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 36-year-old Ortiz just needs to make sure he has no slip ups in his fight against Thompson in order to get on the Canelo-Khan card. Ortiz isn’t expected to have any problems beating the soon to be 45-year-old Thompson, but you never know. The 6’5” Thompson is one of those tall heavyweights that give lots of fighter’s problems with his high work rate, huge frame, and his southpaw stance.

Loeffler hoping Canelo will fight Golovkin

Image: Loeffler hoping Canelo will fight GolovkinBy Dan Ambrose: Promoter Tom Loeffler is taking a wait and see approach with WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as far as whether he’ll choose to defend his title against interim WBC challenger Gennady “GGG” Golovkin later this year as mandated by the World Boxing Council. Loeffler, who promotes Golovkin, believes that Canelo is too proud to just give up his WBC title without a fight by facing Golovkin. Loeffler doesn’t think that Canelo is the type to vacate his WBC title in order to avoid Gennady.

If Canelo chooses not to face Golovkin, then he’ll be stripped of his WBC title and Golovkin will be made the new WBC middleweight champion, according to Loeffler.

Thurman: Khan should watch film on Mayweather-Canelo for preparation

thurman111By Dan Ambrose: WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman thinks that the underdog Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) needs to sit down and study tape of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s win over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) from three years ago so that he has a better chance of beating him on May 7.

Thurman isn’t ruling out a win for the 29-year-old Khan, but he thinks he’s going to need to fight smart by following the Mayweather blueprint.

Judah thinks Khan can beat Canelo with speed

judah66By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Zab Judah is giving Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) a good chance of beating WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their fight on May 7.

Judah, who was stopped by Khan in 2011, thinks that his speed could be the difference in this fight. Judah doesn’t see Canelo’s size and power advantage being enough for him to win this fight if Khan fights smart an boxes the slower-moving Canelo for 12 rounds.

Where Judah believes that Khan could get in trouble is if he tries to fight toe-to-toe against Canelo after getting nailed by one of his big shots. Khan has a habit of wanting to pay his opponents back by nailing them after he gets hit hard. This has led to Khan getting hurt and even stopped in some of his fights.

Canelo v Khan – what will it prove?

canelo955By Danny Washington: So the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) vs. Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) fight has been announced for a while now, and everyone is chipping in with their opinion of the May 7 fight on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Some are saying it’s a mismatch, some are saying it’s a master stroke by Khan’s management.

Now let me be clear, I’m English, I’m a boxing fan. My opinion of Khan is pretty indifferent. I think he had/has major talent, but has been badly managed. He has fought nobodies and he talks far too much for my liking. He has wastes years waiting for the bog money fights when he should have been keeping busy, earning the big fights.

Khan – when in Vegas, gamble

khan66By Hayesa: I initially want to make one thing clear, I’m a British fight fan, always have been always will be. Unless for some unknown reason the BBBC decide to erase the professional sport from UK soil, no disrespect to the Cubans here. The reason I want to make this clear, is articles like this usually result in a turf war like tirade of comments instead of a gentleman’s discussion over the hot topic raised.

What hotter right now than the recent announcement of Amir Khan’s decision to step up in weight and fight 46-1 Mexican Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. A decision that has many fans scratching their pugilist brains trying to understand why Khan would take what many feel to be an impossible fight. Well let’s ask ourselves a few questions that currently stand in the way of fans getting behind the young man from Bolton England.

Does Khan deserve the fight against Canelo? In short, yes. Of course he deserves the fight, previous matchups against the likes of Paulie Maglinaggi, Marcos Maidana, Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri, means the 31-3 fighter has got himself into a unique position where he can not be overlooked.

De La Hoya: Canelo has a tough fight because of Khan’s speed

delahoya5By Jeff Aranow: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya thinks his fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) could be in for a tough fight against challenger Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on May 7.

De La Hoya is specifically worried about Khan’s hand speed giving Canelo issues because he’s had problems in the past when facing guys with fast hands and good foot movement. Canelo lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, and he also lost to Erislandy Lara in the minds of many fans.

Some fans also think that Canelo deserved no better than a draw in his fight against Austin Trout. If you take what the fans say as gospel, then Canelo’s record is really 45-2-2, 32. That’s not a bad record, but it’s definitely not as good as the record listed for him.

Canelo vs. Khan stage set for Las Vegas clash

khan56By Dan Ambrose: Earlier today, it was made official that the May 7 Golden Boy promoted card headlined by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) vs. Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) will officially be taking place at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is a good chance for boxing fans to see the pulling power of the 25-year-old Canelo because the venue seats 20,000 fans. A super star like Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao would no doubt sell out the venue.

If Canelo can do the same thing, then it will show the fans how much ground he’s gained on those two aging superstars. Canelo is capable of drawing big crowds in Texas, but we don’t know if he can do the same thing in places like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, California or New York City.
