By Jason Kim: After only five fights, former World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Samuel Peter (34-4, 27 KO’s) was released by Top Rank on Friday, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Top Rank signed the 30-year-old Peter after he had been beaten in back to back fights by Vitali Klitschko and Eddie Chambers.
Peter may have been too nice to beat Wladimir
By Dave Lahr: Samuel Peter could have beaten IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last Saturday night. All Peter had to do was get evil with Wladimir every time the big Ukrainian grabbed him in one of his many clinches that he did every round. Peter had like 10 chances per round to knock Wladimir out each time he dove in and clinched the Nigerian slugger.
Heavyweight Deadwood
by Mark Hepplestall: I have been noticing that the Klitschko’s and David Haye have been getting some stick about fighting old boxers, well if you look at the heavyweight rankings the champions do not have much choice as there are 7 heavyweights out of the top 15 who are over the age of 30 not including the champions IBF/WBO title holder Wladimir Klitschko, 34, and WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, 39. Also taking out the top contenders and just looking at the hot prospects you can see Odlanier Solis, ranked 18th in the world and 30 years old with 16 fights.
Wladimir Klitschko, boring or just that good vs. Samuel Peter
By Matt Muranaka: The Klitschko brothers are often times thought of in the world of boxing, as simply boring. With most of American fight fans not really showing any real support beyond the two Ukrainian brothers that have a combined: 100 fights, 95 wins, 5 losses, and 87 ko’s. This is the reason why they are mega superstars in Germany, and why Klitschko (55-3,49KO’s ) vs Peters (34-4, 27KO’s) II had around 40,000 people in attendance.
Klitschko defeats Peter but looks as boring as usual
By William Mackay: IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) probably didn’t do anything in his performance last Saturday night to change the minds of HBO executives to start showing Klitschko’s fights any time soon. Wladimir looked tentative for the most part in beating Samuel Peter (34-4, 27 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO. Klitschko mostly threw jabs and rarely threw any combinations in the fight. His offense was essentially limited to one punch at a time – either a left hook, jab or a right hand. Even when Peter’s right eye was nearly closed late in the fight, Wladimir still only threw one shot at a time and looked as if he was afraid of getting countered by the painfully slow Nigerian.
Steward had to tell Wladimir to stop clinching Peter
By Dave Lahr: In looking at last Saturday’s bout between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and challenger Samuel Peter, I couldn’t help but notice that Wladimir’s trainer Emanuel Steward was practically begging Wladimir to stop clinching Peter after the 9th round. It’s too bad that Steward had to wait so long to get on Wladimir’s case, because Wladimir had been clinching after almost every punch since first round of the fight.
