McWilliams Arroyo with impossible task against Roman Gonzalez

1-romangonzalez (1)By Dan Ambrose: WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) has what amounts to be a stay busy fight this Saturday night against Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs) on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Dominic Wade fight at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

While the promoters have tried to build the Gonzalez-Arroyo fight as a competitive one, it’s not going to be. Arroyo is huge step down from Gonzalez’s last opponent Brian Viloria, and about the only interesting thing about the fight is predicting when Gonzalez is going to get Arroyo out of there.

Roman Gonzalez ready to headline his own fight cards

1-romangonzalez (2)By Chris Williams: K2 Promotions and Gennady Golovkin may be without one of their biggest drawing fighters in WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) after this Saturday’s fight card on HBO PPV from the Forum in Inglewood, California.

After appeared on two of Gonzalez’s previous fight cards, Gonzalez is ready to branch out and headline his own career. He’ll be fighting McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs) this Saturday on the Golovkin vs. Dominic Wade card, but the 28-year-old Gonzalez feels he’s ready to be his own main event and it’s quite understandable him wanting to do this. Gonzalez has picked up a big fan base in the United States recently, and yet he’s not making the big money that we normally see from fighters of his talent level.

This is why boxing is self-destructive

1-romangonzalez (2)By Jermilll Pennington: I was doing my morning browse of my twitter timeline and came across a tweet from ESPN’s Brian Kenny. Kenny’s tweet was a post of ESPN’s updated p4p ranking. Atop the list was none other than Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez. Honestly I don’t have a problem with Gonzalez being the #1 guy in the sport, I have a problem with the #1 guy in the sport being relatively unknown to even hardcore fans.

Now before all you boxing nerds come out saying you knew of Gonzalez for years, you must first understand that you are a boxing nerd. To you I would like to pose this question; name another sport on earth where the best guy in the game is completely unknown to the majority of fans who follow the sport? I like to fancy myself a hardcore; however, I have to question that assertion because before Gonzalez started showing up on Gennady Golovkin undercards, I had never heard of the guy.

50% of Golovkin-Wade tickets already sold

golovkin44By Dan Ambrose: The tickets for the April 23 fight between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and Dominic Wade are literally selling like hotcakes for their fight at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

With exactly two months to go before the fight, 8000 tickets have already been sold and it seems almost academic that the fight will sellout. It’ll be televised on HBO Championship Boxing, so fans that couldn’t get tickets will still be able to see it live. If Golovkin can sellout tickets like this against an over-matched opponent like the 25-year-old Wade, then what kind of tickets sales will we be looking at in a Golovkin vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight later this year? We might be talking about a fight that could sell out the 80,000 seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Of course, that would require that Canelo agree to fight Golovkin, and right now it’s still not known whether the 25-year-old Canelo will ever agree to take that fight. I take that back. I do think Canelo will agree to fight Golovkin in the future, but it might not be until he gets a little older and starts showing signs of having lost some of his power and talent.

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez faces McWilliams Arroyo on 4/23

Image: Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez faces McWilliams Arroyo on 4/23By Dan Ambrose: In a disappointing fight, WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) will defend his title against #9 WBC McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs) in a voluntary defense on April 23 on HBO Championship Boxing on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Dominic Wade fight card at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

The 30-year-old Arroyo hasn’t been that active in the last two years after losing to IBF World flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng by a 12 round split decision in September 2014. Arroyo looked bad in losing to Ruenroeng in that fight, and it should have been a wider score than a split decision. I think that was bad judging. Arroyo was clearly beaten.
