Hatton thinks Khan needs better preparation for Kell Brook

hatton64By Scott Gilfoid: If Ricky Hatton had it his way, Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) would have more preparation before he climbs into the ring to face IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) for a unification fight.

Hatton thinks the timing is bad for the 29-year-old Khan right now to be taking on Brook, given the fact that Khan fought only once in 2013 and 2015, and hasn’t fought since May of last year. All total, Khan has fought four times in the last three years, period. Heck, that’s like one year’s worth of fighting for someone like Deontay Wilder.

Khan has been waiting on big money fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao that never materialized. All that waiting around has caused Khan to miss out on a lot of fight opportunities. If he fights Brook in the summer on June 4 at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, Brook will have the upper hand in the ring because he’s been the busier fighter in the last three years.

Khan should fight Brook, says Hatton

hatton939By Scott Gilfoid: Ricky Hatton doesn’t see any point in Amir Khan waiting round before getting the fight against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook out of the way. Khan says he wants Brook to build up their eventual fight by facing and beating a couple of top fighters in the 147lb division like Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Marcos Maidana and/or Tim Bradley.

That doesn’t look like it’s ever going to happen unfortunately. Brook just finished fighting Jo Jo Dan and Frankie Gavin in back to back fights. Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn is reportedly interested in matching Brook against Diego Chaves, whose ring record in his last three fights is something like 1-1-1. That’s not too good, is it?

Can Ricky Hatton burn off enough blubber for a comeback?

hatton34342By Scott Gilfoid: With 42-year-old Oscar De La Hoya recently talking about making a comeback to the sport before changing his mind to stay retired, it makes one think of former two division world champion Ricky Hatton (45-3, 32 KOs) as someone who is due for another comeback attempt of his own. He’d just need to take off a wee bit of weight first.

In comparison to De La Hoya, the 37-year-old Hatton is a young chicken. He’s still young enough to fight and possibly even succeed against the right opposition. But for Hatton to make a comeback, he’s going to need to burn the blubber off that he’s put on because he’s gotten quite heavy.

Hatton worried about De La Hoya getting hurt against Golovkin

hatton555By Scott Gilfoid: Ricky Hatton doesn’t think it’s such a good idea for 42-year-old Oscar De La Hoya to face a slugger like WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in his first fight of his potential comeback. De La Hoya has been saying over and over again that he only wants to fight the very best when or if he comes back, and he only wants Golovkin or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hatton, who is no stranger to ill-advised comebacks of his own, thinks that De La Hoya isn’t a real middleweight, and that he could be in trouble if he comes back to face a knockout artist like Golovkin.

Hatton: Khan deserves a payday against Mayweather

khan555By Scott Gilfoid: British boxing star Ricky Hatton believes that former IBF/WBA 140lb champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) deserves to be the one who gets picked out for a payday against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) for his next fight in September this year.

Hatton thinks that Khan has the speed to give Mayweather a tough time, and he thinks he might even pull off an upset against him. However, Hatton doesn’t think that Khan will get the fight against Mayweather due to his lack of appeal in the United States.

Hatton: Mayweather will adapt his style and beat Pacquiao

1-33By Chris Williams: Former Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao victim Ricky Hatton is picking Mayweather Jr. to win the mega-fight between him and Pacquiao on May 2nd. Hatton was soundly beaten by both fighters in the past.

In fact, Pacquiao did a better job beating Hatton than Mayweather Jr. did, but of course Mayweather Jr. already softened Hatton up previously by knocking him out before Pacquiao got to him. Hatton thinks that Mayweather’s ability to adapt to any fighter will give him an edge against the 36-year-old Pacquiao.

Hatton: Mayweather might be forced to fight Khan

hatton939By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion, now turned promoter, Ricky Hatton believes that WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr may wind up being forced to fight Britain’s Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) because Hatton feels that Khan is becoming such a big name in the sport.

Hatton sees the 28-year-old Khan as having beaten a lot of the top fighters, and for that reason Mayweather will have a lot of pressure to fight Khan.

Brook/Khan rivalry shaping up like Hatton/Witter

khan56By Gav Duthie: Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn has been candid about his frustration in trying to tempt Amir Khan into the ring to face compatriat Kell Brook. Comparisons have been made to the rivalry between Kell Brook stablemate Junior ‘The Hitter’ Witter and Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton which was a fight mooted for years in the mid naughties which failed to materialise. Will the big Brook-Khan fight suffer the same fate? This article reflects on what happened between Witter and Hatton as well as comparisons and differences between the situation then and now.

Ricky Hatton v Junior Witter

There was an obvious crossroads when this would have been a huge fight in the UK. Both were promoted by Frank Warren and they were also world champions. Witter went from 15-1-2 (4) after losing a close decision to Zab Judah taking the fight at short notice to 30-1-2 (19) between 2000 and 2004.

Hatton expects Kell Brook to get big fights in 2015

brook55666By Scott Gilfoid: Ricky Hatton sees big things for IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs) in 2015 with him getting the big fights that he’s been talking about for ages now. Hatton believes that the 28-year-old Brook will be able to get important fights this year.

Hatton doesn’t say who he sees as the big fights, but it’s likely Amir Khan, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. I’m not really sure that Brook will get any of those fights this year. Khan is a possibility simply because he has so few options.

Ricky Hatton: Mr Popular

hatton464646333343By Abbas Dadhiwala: Ricky Hatton was a boxer who captured the British public’s imagination like no other. No other boxer found a following like Hatton. The people took him as one. No other British Boxer could match Hatton’s popularity, be it Henry Cooper, Lennox Lewis, Bruno, Calzaghe or Hamed. Hatton popularity was a phenomenon, he may have won world titles but his legacy will always be that he had the biggest following in British Boxing.

Hatton career record of 45 victories in 48 fights including 32 KO’s ranks favourably with other boxers. Hatton deserves his place in the top 10 of British Boxers for the Kostya Tszyu fight and the 25,00 fans he took over for the Mayweather fight.
