Quillin decisions Konecny

quillin53By Jim Dower: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (31-0, 22 KO’s) successfully defended his title against 35-year-old #2 WBO Lukas Konecny (50-5, 23 KO’s) on Saturday night at the DC Armory, in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. The final judges scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109. The crowd booed the fight frequently from the 9th round on due to Quillin’s safety first manner of fighting.

He had a small punching bag in front of him in the form of the short 5’8″ Konecny, but Quillin chose not to take any risks in the fight. The fight resembled a sparring session for the most part due to the slow pace. Quillin treated Konecny like he was a huge puncher like Gennady Golovkin. Konecny landed some nice shots in close, but his power shouldn’t have worried Quillin.

Konecny: I can beat Quillin

quillin4By Allan Fox: #2 WBO 160lb contender Lukas Konecny (50-4, 23 KO’s) feels he’s got what it takes to pull off a huge upset on April 19th in his title challenge against WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) at the DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia, USA. The 35-year-old Konecny is quite fortunate to be getting a world title shot at all, because the other three sanctioning bodies don’t even have him ranked in their top 15 after his lopsided 12 round decision loss against former WBO 154lb champion Zaurbek Baysangurov.

The World Boxing Organization, however, have Konecny as their No.2 contender at 160 and have him ranked above a number of fighters who would likely beat him like Curtis Stevens, Matthew Macklin, Andy Lee, and Daniel Jacobs.

Peter Quillin vs. Lukas Konecny on April 19th on Showtime

quillin653By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) will be continuing with his habit of defending his title against weak opposition when he faces #2 WBO Lukas Konecny (50-4, 23 KO’s) on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Beibut Shumenov card on Showtime on April 19th at the DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia, USA. Quillin has been a disappointment in the eyes of some boxing fans due to him not facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who has shown a lot of interest in facing him.

Instead of agreeing to fight Golovkin, Quillin has beaten Fernando Guerrero and Gabriel Rosado. The way that Quillin performed in the Rosado fight, it’s probably a good idea that he’s not agreed to fight Golovkin, because he’d likely get knocked out within 6 rounds by Golovkin.

Sergio Mora vs. Peter Quillin possible

mora1By Allan Fox: Former WBC light middleweight champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (25-3-2, 8 KO’s) has a chance of facing WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) next, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN and Steve Kim. Quillin, 30, needs a well known opponent for his next title defense, and the #10 WBA Mora definitely serves that purpose given his vast experience during his 14-year pro career.

Quillin is coming off of a 10th round stoppage win over challenger Gabriel Rosado last October in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight was halted due to a cut that Rosado had suffered. However, Rosado was really taking the fight to Quillin at the time of the stoppage, and he had shaken Quillin up in the 9th round with some big shots.

Cotto or Quillin as next opponent for Martinez?

martinez2By Timothy Medina: Sergio Martinez (51-2-2) is the current WBC middleweight champion. Martinez is a big target because of the gold he is holding. There are two fighters that have spoken out this month about wanting to fight Martinez for his title. Those two fighters are Miguel Cotto (38-4) and Peter Quillin (30-0). Both Cotto and Quillin had TKO victories in their last fights. They are both deserving of facing Martinez in 2014 and I can see either one of them putting up a great fight against him.

On October 5th, Miguel Cotto faced Delvin Rodriguez which was a fight that would determine how the remainder of Cotto’s career would end. Many people were questioning how much gas was left in Cotto’s tank due to all the damage he has received over the years, and his mentality after suffering two consecutive losses in 2012. Rodriguez is obviously not the toughest opponent Cotto has fought, but he was seen as a fighter who could go the distance with Cotto. However, with the help of Freddie Roach, Cotto went back to his roots which is being a spectacular body puncher and disposed of Rodriguez within three rounds.

Quillin: I want Sergio Martinez next

quillin-rosado-resultsBy Eric Thomas: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (30-0, 22 KO’s) successfully defended his title with a 10th round TKO last night over Gabriel Rosado (21-7, 13 KO’s), but you have to say that Quillin’s stock dropped considerably with the win. The fight was stopped due to a cut over the left eye of Rosado, who was more than game to continue fighting. Quillin, however, didn’t seem excited about the prospects of giving Rosado a rematch when asked after the fight by Jim Gray of Showtime. Quillin says that it’s Al Haymon who sets up his fights.

When asked if he would like to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez next, Quillin said “Of course I want Sergio Martinez next.”

Rosado feels like he’s been overlooked as a viable opponent for tonight’s fight and he thinks he’s going to shock the boxing world by stopping the 30-year-old Quillin.

Rosado said “I understand the whole champion is favored over the challenger. I don’t feel as I’m getting any credit for what I’ve done. That’s why I want to have an impressive performance and I’m planning to knock out Quillin.”

Hopkins-Murat, Deontay-Firtha & Quillin-Rosado this Saturday on Showtime

deontay1By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) will be in the ring this Saturday night in what could be an excellent showcase fight on Showtime against the towering 6’6″ Nicolai Firtha (21-10-1, 8 KO’s) in what could be the best fight of the card head-lined by Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KO’s) defending his IBF 175 lb. trap against Karo Murat (25-1-1, 15 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

The Deontay-Firtha fight will be most interesting bout on the card because it matched two huge heavyweights that will be trading bombs from the get go. Firtha may not be a top world class heavyweight right now, but he’s got class power. There’s definitely nothing wrong with the kind of power that Firtha’s packing.
