Chagaev Injures Foot, Postpones Bout With Valuev

chagaev26575.jpgBy Jim Dower: For the third time since winning the WBA heavyweight title by controversial fashion with a 12-round split decision over Nikolay Valuev last April, undefeated heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (24-0, 17 KOs) has been forced to cancel one of his title defenses, this time to former champion Valuev (48-1, 24 KOs), who Chagaev had been scheduled to fight next month on July 5th. Earlier today, while conducting sparring in preparation for his bout in July, Chagaev tore his Achilles tendon in his left foot. The injury will require surgery for it to be healed, which will put Chagaev out of action for another extended amount of time, likely until the end of the year.

Valuev, the number # 1 challenger in the WBA, has no other choice but to wait for Chagaev’s injury to heal. This was the second time that Valuev has been forced to wait on Chagaev, who canceled an earlier title defense to Valuev set for May 31st due to a viral infection that Chagaev suffered. Last year, in October, Chagaev had been scheduled to fight a unification bout with then WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov, but Chagaev had to back out due to another viral infection. One has to feel a little sorry for Valuev, 34, who lost his title to Chagaev last April despite out-landing him in the fight by a sizable margin. Since losing his title, he’s beaten two fighters, Jean Francois Bergeron and most recently former WBO heavyweight champion Serguei Lyakhovich in February.

Chagaev-Valuev: Nikolay Looking For Revenge

valuev8888442.jpgBy William MacKay: Former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs) will be looking to avenge his only defeat on his record when he goes up against undefeated WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs) on July 5th, at the Gerry Weber Statdium, in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Valuev and Chagaev were previously scheduled to fight on May 31st, but Chagaev was struck ill with a nasty viral infection involving his upper respiratory tract.

Valuev, 34, lost his title to Chagaev in a closely contested majority decision loss in April 2007, a bout in which Chagaev hardly proved himself to have done enough to have taken the title from the 7’0” 320 lb Valuev. There had been hopes immediately after that fight that Chagaev would give Valuev an immediate rematch, giving him a shot at regaining his title. However, Chagaev instead opted to take an easy fight against British heavyweight Matt Skelton, whom he beat by a dull 12-round unanimous decision victory in January. Previous to that, Chagaev had hoped to meet up with then WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov in what would have been a unification bout scheduled for October 13th, in Moscow, Russia, but that fight fell through when Chagaev again became ill and had to cancel the fight.

Chagaev Cancels Bout With Valuev Due To Virus

chagaev56644.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: For the second time since winning his WBA title in April 2007, heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (24-0-1, 17 KOs) has been forced to pull out of a bout due to a virus. His opponent, former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs) will be forced to wait a little longer, perhaps a lot longer while Chagaev attempts to defeat this lingering virus. Since winning the WBA title by a controversial majority decision over Valuev in 2006, Chagaev has only defended it a paltry one time over Matt Skelton in on January 19th.

Chagaev, 29, had previously been forced to pull out of a title unification bout with Sultan Ibragimov in October 1997 for the same reason, knocked out due to a virus problem. At this stage, Chagaev is catching up to former WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, who cancelled title defenses to Hasim Rahman countless times due to nagging injuries.

Valuev vs. Chagaev On May 31st

valuev5745346.jpgBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (24-0, 17 KOs) will finally be giving a rematch to former champion Nikolay Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs), whom he beat by a majority decision on April 14th 2007. The rematch long awaited by Valuev, will be taking place on May 31st at the Arena Oberhausen, Oberhausen, in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. In their prior fight, Chagaev did little to distinguish himself as the victor in the fight as he defensively, mostly staying on the outside and when he would attempt to land punches, they would come up short and land on Valuev’s chest or gloves.

Only rarely did the short, 6’ foot Chagaev even reach Valuev’s head. Rather than give Valuev a much needed rematch so as to distinguish who the real better fighter is between them, Skelton cooled his heals doing little for nine months until finally defending his title against Max Skelton in January 2008. Chagaev fought poorly against Skelton, clinching often and looking slow and out of shape. The fight resembled more of a tough man contest than a professional title match.

Valuev Dominates Lyakhovich

By David Lahr: Former World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (48-1, 34 KOs) had little problem beating former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Lyakhovich (23-3, 14 KOs) tonight, beating him by a remarkably easy 12-round unanimous decision at the Nuernberg Arena, in Nuremberg, Bayern, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 120-108, 120-108 and 120-107, giving Valuev, 34, another possible shot at Ruslan Chagaev, the WBA heavyweight champion, who defeated Valuev by a controversial majority decision in April 2007, to take his title away.

Valuev-Lyakhovich: Nikolai Hoping To Get Another Title Shot

By Jim Carran: Previously unbeaten World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev (47-1, 34 KOs) will attempt to line himself up for another title shot on Saturday night when he goes up against former World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich (23-2, 14 KOs) in Nuremberg, Germany. If the 7-foot 320 lbs Valuev can get by Lyakhovich, while will likely be no easy task, Valuev will be in line for a title shot at current WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev, who took Valuev’s title in a close majority decision win last year. However, Lyakhovich has vowed to make Valuev work hard on Saturday night, hoping to tire him out like he was against Chagaev, a bout in which Valuev seemed to fade in the later rounds of the fight.

Valuev-Lyakhovich: Should Serguei Have Taken A Tune-Up?

valuev66332.jpgBy Manuel Perez: With only a week to go before the heavyweight showdown between former champions Serguei Lyakhovich (23-2, 14 KOs) and Nikolay Valuev (47-1, 34 KOs) on February 16th, at the Nuernberg Arena, in Nuremberg, Bayern, Germany, one would have to wonder whether Lyakhovich is serving his own best interest by having seemingly rushed into the fight with Valuev, 34, without having fought at least one tune-up bout before the fight.

In case anyone may have forgot, Lyakhovich last fought over a year ago, losing his World Boxing Organization heavyweight title by 12 round TKO to Shannon Briggs on November 4, 2006, a bout that Lyakhovich was leading on cards going into the 12th round when disaster struck. Since that time, Lyakhovich has been inactive, and many boxing fans are wondering whether it was the wisest thing for him to take on a fighter as good as Valuev without at least one fight in between that time. Of course, there are some fighters that say that just by sparring in the gym, they’re able to mimic the same effects as participating in a live fight.

Valuev Fined For Slugging Man In Russia

According to Rueters, former World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (47-1, 34 KOs) has been sued by a Russian man, Yuri Sergeyev, 61, for slugging him two years ago in an altercation in a parking lot outside of a Sports center in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Valuev, 34, was fined thirty thousand roubles, which comes out to roughly $1228, and will have to pay another hundred thousand roubles to compensate the man for his injuries. Valuev, currently ranked #1 in the WBA heavyweight rankings, says that he was merely shaking the man after he insulted Valuev’s wife, Galina, but the man says that he was actually punched by Valuev.

Valuev-Bergeron: Nikolay Back in Action On Saturday

valuev46322_01.jpgFormer WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev (46-1, 34 KOs) makes his first appearance since losing his heavyweight title to Ruslan Chagaev on April 14th when he takes on undefeated Canadian Jean-Francois Bergeron (27-0, 19 KOs) at the EWE-Arena, in Oldenburg, Niedersachsen, Germany. Both fighters are 34, although Bergeron has faced exclusivly soft opposition in his native Canada. Valuev is in the rebuilding stage of his career after losing a controversial 12-round majority decision against Chagaev, a bout in which Valuev appeared to tire badly in the latter rounds of the fight.

Bergeron, ranked #13 in the WBA, has good sixe at 6’5″, though he is perhaps too slender, only weighing 216 lbs. This fact alone will likely be a substantial problem against the 320 lbs Valuev, who will have a 100 pound weight advantage going into the bout. This may not seem like a big deal, but for Bergeron to have to wrestle and trade shots with someone of that size all night long, it can add up to big problems.
