Is Haye Prepared For a “Desperate” Barrett?

Image: Is Haye Prepared For a "Desperate" Barrett?By Scott Gilfoid: With David Haye’s heavyweight battle with Monte Barrett (34-6, 20 KOs) only a short period of time away, one has to wonder whether or not Haye fully understands how desperate the 37 year-old Barrett is in wanting to win this fight.

According to Barrett, “This is my last hoorah. I’m desperate and desperate people do desperate things.”

How Can Haye Not Be Ranked In The Pound-For-Pound List?

Image: How Can Haye Not Be Ranked In The Pound-For-Pound List?By Jordan Taylor: David Haye. How he is not ranked in the pound for pound list is beyond me. With the greatest respect to Ivan Calderon and Paul Williams who have started surfacing in many lists, they do not come close to the Hayemaker.

An explosive boxer who successfully unified the Cruiserweight division by annihilated the so called No. 2 in the division (Enzo Maccarinelli) with a stunning TKO in round 2. Previous to that he challenged Jean-Marc Mormeck for the WBA and WBC Cruiserweight titles in 2007. Haye defeated Mormeck with a TKO in the 7th round.

Is Haye Ready For Barrett?

Image: Is Haye Ready For Barrett?By Scott Gilfoid: If this were a bodybuilding contest, former cruiserweight champion David Haye (21-1, 20 KOs) would win hands down over heavyweight contender Monte Barrett (34-6, 20 KOs). However, this is going to be an actual heavyweight bout in which punches will be thrown with knockout intentions, and that’s where things get a lot more dicey for the soft-chinned Haye.

Ranked high already in the heavyweight division despite having fought only once previously against a C-class heavyweight, Haye has had a lofty ranked of number #3 in the WBO and #4 in the WBC bestowed upon him, all without having fought one good heavyweight. While it may seem wrong to most boxing purists who see it as unfair, it’s actually done all the time in the sport. However, it remains to be seen whether it will come back to haunt Haye on November 15th when he steps foot into the O2 Arena (Millennium Dome) arena against Barrett.

Haye, 28, has had major problems going up against big hitters in the cruiserweight division, getting stopped by Carl Thompson in a 5th round stoppage in 2004, and knocked down by Lolenga Mock and Jean Marc Mormeck.

Haye/Barrett, Fagan/Khan, Chavez Jr/Vanda – Latest Boxing News

chavez45635332443.jpgUndefeated light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (37-0-1, 29 KOs) will be looking to make a statement against Matt Vanda (39-7, 22 KOs) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chavez Jr., 22, the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez, is hoping to look better than he did last time out against Vanda, a fight that turned out to be a grueling 10-round split decision victory for Chavez and one where he hardly impressed. In this case, Chavez had the excuse that he was sick with the flu, which, according to him, prevented him from fighting at his best against Vanda.

It’s unclear, however, why Chavez chose to fight Vanda while sick with the flu. Perhaps the smart thing would have been to cancel the bout rather than perform badly as he did. In fairness to Chavez, it’s hard to blame him though. Up until that fight, he had done relatively well against the fodder that had been served up to in his previous 37 fights, building up an impressive unbeaten record with zero quality opponents. Vanda, 30, a good C-level fighter, was figured to be slightly better than some of Chavez’s recent mediocre opponents. However, whether it be the illness that affected Chavez on that night, or the fact that he’s not much better than Vanda, it’s hard to say for sure.

David Haye – Can Monte Barrett Break Haye’s Glass Jaw?

haye3445517.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight David Haye (21-1, 20 KOs) is on an express trip heading for a fight with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in early 2009. Before doing so, Haye is going to cut his teeth on journeyman Monte Barrett, a fighter that Haye is hoping he can beat easily and impressive enough to give him a shot in the arm with boxing fans, to try and give him some much-needed credibility to his heavyweight career. Haye, already a former WBA, WBC and WBO cruiserweight champion, is trying to duplicate those efforts in the heavyweight division.

However, in this case, Haye isn’t looking to work his way up slowly to build to that level, and is thinking that he can skip all that and move straight to the top with only a minor fight against Barrett before that. It’s perhaps not the smartest thing that Haye could be doing, because he could end up looking stupid, especially if Barrett ends up taking him out in the early rounds of the fight. Haye had previously bragged long hard, saying that he would be facing a top heavyweight with a big name. As far as a top heavyweight goes, Barrett, ranked # 6th in the WBO, partially fits the bill. However, he’s much less the fighter than I originally expected from Haye when he initially started making pronouncements about wanting to fight a top heavyweight in the division, someone that he could get a lot of attention from the fans for fighting.

Is Haye Sucking Up To Barrett?

haye2344543242.jpgBy Michael Lieberman: After watching the latest interview of David Haye on the Steve Bunce show, I got to say I’m really starting to lose whatever little respect I had Haye. He’s all over his November 15th opponent, Monte Barrett, giving him a lot of sweet talk on Bunce’s program. “I’ve been going on about heavyweights being big fat slobs and this guy isn’t. Monte is going to come after me. He’s fast, he’s coming off three spectacular knockout wins. If he hits me with the same shots he hit Tye Fields with, I’ll probably end up in the same position as he did. I can’t afford to get hit with those bombs.” It sounds like Haye is looking for an escape valve, so that he can have an excuse if something goes wrong like him getting stretched by Barrett. I can’t get used to hearing him say nice things about one of his opponents, because he’s usually slamming them and calling them fat slobs and what not.

Probably some of Haye’s fans might think he’s saying this to talk up the fight so that he can make Barrett, a fighter that has lost four out of his last nine fights, look like more of a credible opponent to his boxing fans, but I think it’s for another reason. From my lookout on this, Haye appears afraid of how he’s going to look if he ends up being knocked out by a fighter that he was originally talking down on, and wants to ensure that Barrett is put forth in the best possible light just in case that happens.
