Cotto-Margarito: Will Antonio Give Up His IBF Belt?

margarito982.jpgBy Nate Anderson: After waiting for eons for WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) to show any interest in fighting Antonio Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs), it finally looks as if it’s about to come about after Antonio’s 6th round destruction of IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron. Both fighters are looking for the fight to occur on January 26th, at Madison Square Garden, in New York. However, before it can happen, Margarito, 30, may have to defend his newly won title against the #1 challenger in the IBF, Joshua Clottey. Margarito is no stranger to Clottey, having struggled to beat him by a 12-round unanimous decision in December 2006.

Obviously, this is a fight that Maragarito would prefer not to have to fight if at all possible. Clottey fought him very closely, especially in the first half of the fight where he was beating Margarito and making him look slow. According to the latest news, promoter Bob Arum is counting on Margarito giving up his IBF belt so that he could fight Cotto for his WBA welterweight belt. In doing so, Margarito could avoid what would likely be a very tough fight with Clottey, one in which there would be no guarantee of certainty that he would emerge the victor or uninjured, for that matter.

As of now, Mayweather, 30, has a scheduled rematch with Oscar De La Hoya to take place on September 20th in Las Vegas. Depending on the outcome of the fight, it’s difficult to say when/if Mayweather will be interested in a bout with the unbeaten 27 year-old Cotto.

Cotto-Gomez: Is Alfonso The Best Option For Miguel?

By Chris Thomas: With this recent news story of World Boxing Association welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) opting to defend his title against Alfonso Gomez (18-3-2, 8 KOs), a fighter from the television series “The Contender,” on April 12th at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, I wonder if Cotto pursued every avenue to find a better opponent than Gomez? For a fighter as good and as popular as Cotto, you would think that he’d want to take on a quality opponent, at least someone ranked in the top 15, if not the top 5.

Cotto To Take On Gomez On April 12th

cotto9812456.jpgUndefeated World Boxing Association welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) will be making his fourth title defense when he takes on Alfonso Gomez (18-3-2, 8 KOs) on April 12th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Gomez, a former star from the reality television series The Contender, is mostly known as being the fighter that retired a badly shop worn Arturo Gatti, stopping him in the 7th round on July 14th, 2007. Other than that, Gomez has little to get excited about. He’s essentially a good 2nd tier fighter, one that will put on a good show against lesser B-level fighters, but will be hopelessly outclassed against top notch opposition such as Cotto.

Late last year, Gomez has been mentioned as a possible opponent for for prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, for whatever reason, Gomez’s name was withdrawn as a prospective opponent for Chavez, probably because he was far too dangerous for him.

Mayweather Not Interested In Cotto

mayweather557567.jpgIn the latest boxing news, World Boxing Council welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) said to Franklin McNeil of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, “He (Miguel Cotto) knows he can’t beat me. He knows. Cotto’s remedy to beat me is pressure, pressure, pressure. That’s not the remedy to beat me.” Apparently, Mayweather, 30, is more interested in taking 2008 off to pursue his other interests, such as boxing promotion, music and film.

However, there are people in the boxing community that see Mayweather’s actions – or lack there of – spurred mostly because of his fear of being beaten, and hence risking his reputation as the pound-4-pound number one fighter in boxing. To be sure, Mayweather has carefully selected the vast majority of his opponents since 2003, somehow avoiding the best fighters in the division, yet the public appears none the wiser for his actions. In saying that he’ll be focusing on his other interests, Mayweather has a ready made excuse to avoid Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams and Kermit Cintron, the top fighters in the welterweight division and the ones that Mayweather should have been fighting the past couple of years if he was serious about wanting to fight the best.

Mayorga To Move Back Down To 147: “Im Coming After Cotto”

Shortly after defeating Fernando Vargas on Saturday night and subsequently sending him into retirement, Mayorga, 34, announced that he’s moving back down to the welterweight division – 147 lbs – in hopes of fighting Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather jr. On the surface, Mayorga seems almost delusional, as neither of these two fighters will likely waste their time fighting a low level fighter like Mayorga, considering it would be a fight the general public would have little interest, even with Mayorga’s usual wild man act before hand.

“I’d Love To Fight Cotto” – Ricky Hatton

hatton232222.jpgAs lnternational Boxing Federation light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton (43-0, 31 KOs) prepares for his upcoming showdown with Floyd Mayweather on December 8th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Hatton took time out for a chat session at ESPN. During the session, Hatton, 29, when asked whether he’d like to fight Miguel Cotto, said ” I’d love to fight Miguel Cotto.” There it was point blank, something that the writers like me had been waiting for, a bombshell blast.

For most of us, we’d either not considered that Hatton could beat Mayweather, or we naturally assumed that he fight Oscar De La Hoya next, whom has been saying in the media that he’s interested in fighting Hatton. Naturally, a fight with De La Hoya would easily make mean more money for Hatton than one against Cotto, a new star in the boxing world for most fans. Cotto’s promoter, Bob Arum, has also mentioned Hatton as a future opponent, possibly in 2008, but the fight would hinge on a number of important factors, namely that Hatton would have to first beat Mayweather for it to happen.
