Macklin to help Brook with tips on Golovkin

(Matthew Macklin seen here after getting knocked out by a body shot from Gennady Golovkin) By Scott Gilfoid: British fighter Matthew Macklin says he wants to give some helpful tips to Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) to help him get ready for his fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in a little over two weeks from now on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

It’s hard to understand what useful advice Macklin could have for Brook to help him against Golovkin, because he was knocked out in the 3rd round by him three years ago in 2013. Macklin ran around the ring trying not to get hit by GGG. Eventually, Golovkin caught up with Macklin and knocked him put with a body shot in the third round.

“I fought Golovkin and didn’t fare too well but hopefully I can pass on a few pointers to Kell and hopefully he can do a much better job,” said Macklin to skysports.com.

Matthew Macklin hangs up his gloves

mackline34By Scott Gilfoid: With four defeats in his last ten fights, former three-time world title challenge Matthew Macklin (35-6, 22 KOs) has reportedly retired from the sport after 15 years in the game.

Only 33, Macklin at least ended his career on a high note in defeating former world title challenger Brian Rose by a narrow 12 round majority decision last month on April 9. Macklin did not look good in that fight against Rose, nor did he look good in his previous fight against domestic level fighter Jason Welborn last October.

Macklin was very fortunate to get the win in that fight because it was one of those fights that could have gone the other way. It’s unclear if Macklin thought he should have beaten Rose easily the way that Carson Jones had done in his first fight against him and how Demetrius Andrade made short work of Rose.

Matthew Macklin retires

macklin4323by Matthew Macklin: Last month, at the O2 Arena in London, around the half way point in my fight with Brian Rose, I knew it was time to retire. My face was marking up, I was getting frustrated at not being able to land my shots and I knew that physically, after a long career my body was telling me that enough was enough. I also knew that I didn’t want to go out like that so with the help of my brother Seamus I decided to end my career on my terms and pulled the win out of the bag in the last few rounds. Deep down I came to the realization on the night that it was probably going to be my last fight. I turn 34 in two days time and, after much reflection I have decided that following 24 years in the sport, over 80 amateur fights and 41 professional fights, it is time to hang up my gloves.

Matthew Macklin defeats Brian Rose

YouTube video

By Jeff Aranow: In what could spell the end of a once promising career, former world title challenger Brian Rose (28-4-1, 8 KOs) was beaten tonight by former four-time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (35-6, 22, KOs) by a 12 round majority decision in a competitive fight on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua vs. Charles Martin card at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Macklin had too much power for the light hitting Rose to deal with in this fight. It was predictable that Macklin would win no matter what. He was just a better overall puncher than Rose, and the judges were more impressed with Macklin’s power than Rose’s weaker shots.

Matthew Macklin vs. Brian Rose on April 9 on Martin-Joshua card

macklin56By Scott Gilfoid: #8 IBF, #11 WBC junior middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (34-6, 22 KOs) will be facing former world title challenger Brian Rose (28-3-1, 8 KOs) in a scheduled 12 round bout on April 9 on the undercard of the heavyweight clash between IBF champion Charles Martin and Anthony Joshua at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

The card will be televised on Sky Box Office. The Macklin-Rose fight will take place in the 154lb division. Macklin recently moved down to that weight class in his last fight against Jason Welborn last October.

I can’t say that Macklin looks any better at 154 than he did at 160, but at least he didn’t get knocked out, so that’s a positive.

Macklin beats Welborn in robbery in Birmingham

By Scott Gilfoid: In a blatant robbery, former three time world time challenger Matthew Macklin (34-6, 22 KOs) won a controversial 10 round unanimous decision over domestic fighter Jason Welborn (17-4, 6 KOs) on Saturday night to win the vacant WBC International super welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, UK.

Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn tonight

By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22 KOs) will be out to save his career tonight in a fight against Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KOs) in a bout for the vacant WBC International super welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, UK.

Macklin is moving to 154 for this fight in hopes that he’ll be able to fight at a higher level and dominate like he’s not been able to do at 160. Macklin has been fighting at middleweight for the past nine years, and it’s an odd move for him to be moving back down in weight to 154 at the age of 33.

Weights: Macklin 153 1/4, Welborn 153 1/4 – Video

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22 KOs) made weight today for his fight against domestic fighter Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KO) this Saturday night for the vacant WBC International super welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, UK. The 33-year-old Macklin weighed in at 153 ¼ pounds. For his part, Welborn also weighed in at 153 1/4lbs.

Macklin is in a bad way here with this fight. He should be able to beat Welborn, but you just can’t know for sure, because Macklin has looked so shaky in some of his fights in the last year. Macklin was given a gift 8 round decision over a very average fighter in Jose Yebes last year in December 2013, and he looked terrible in that fight.

Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn this Saturday

macklin56(Matthew Macklin seen here having a bad day at the office against Jorge Sebastian Heiland) By Scott Gilfoid: Three time world title challenger loser Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22 KOs) will be fighting this Saturday at junior middleweight champion Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KOs) in a scheduled 12 round bout for the vacant WBC International super welterweight title at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, UK.

Macklin, 33, is dropping down in weight to the 154lb division because he feels that the move will help rejuvenate his sagging career. Macklin’s star has kind of faded with his recent 10th round knockout loss to Jorge Sebastian Heiland last year in November 2014.
