Price vs. Sexton: Why is David still fighting this level of opposition?

Image: Price vs. Sexton: Why is David still fighting this level of opposition?By Scott Gilfoid: A former 2008 Olympic heavyweight bronze medalist for Great Britain and now on the verge of turning 30, British heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) is scheduled to fight 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) on November 30th at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, in Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom. The question here is why is a fighter as old as the 6’8″ Price still fighting guys like Skelton?

I mean, shouldn’t Price have started moving up to face better opposition than this? He’s not like Deontay Wilder, who is younger than him and with much less amateur experience. Wilder has an excuse for fighting weak opposition, but Price doesn’t. He had a long amateur career and he’s older than Wilder by close to three years.

David Price v Matt Skelton / London press conference

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: The David Price vs. Matt Skelton press conference was about as interesting as attending meeting on Quantum Physics. Those two guys were playing extra nice with one another and it hard to keep from falling asleep from listening to their kind words to one another in promoting their November 30th fight at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom.

Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) blabbed some stuff about Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) taking him out of his comfort zone for the fight. Specifically it was “He’s going to take me out of my comfort zone. I’m expecting a tough fight. It’s a great fight for me.”

Price still making excuses for fighting Skelton

Image: Price still making excuses for fighting SkeltonBy Scott Gilfoid: The David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) vs. 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) has a new date and will be taking place on November 30th instead of December 15th. The fight will take place at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom, which is no different from the original plan for the mismatch. I mean, fight.

The interesting part is that the 29-year-old Price is still making excuses for why he’s fighting another old guy that’s well beneath him instead of better fighters that are fitting for an ex-2008 Olympic Bronze medalist with loads of amateur experience.

Price said “I’m aware he [Skelton] is 45, but he has won major championships and challenged for a world title. I have only boxed 14 times as a professional and still learning and Matt will bring something new for me.”

David Price explains why he’s fighting 45-year-old Skelton

Image: David Price explains why he's fighting 45-year-old SkeltonBy Scott Gilfoid: Boxing fans are starting to wonder what’s going on with British heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s). They wonder why he’s not fighting better opposition at his advanced age of 29 and with all of his Olympic experience. Fans don’t understand why the 6’8″ Price is fighting guys like 40-year-old Audley Harrison and now 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s) on December 8th rather than some live bodies that could actually help Price in his development.

At 29, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko had both already been world champions, and here Price is still limping along in the slow lane with his career fighting the likes of Harrison and Skelton. Is there something wrong with this picture? Is an example of someone with a failure to launch?

David Price to fight 45-year-old Matt Skelton on December 8th

Image: David Price to fight 45-year-old Matt Skelton on December 8thBy Scott Gilfoid: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) destroyed 40-year-old Audley Harrison (28-6, 21 KO’s) in the 1st round earlier tonight at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, England. This was a mismatch before the fight even started, and few people saw it anything other than that.

With one old codger down the drain, Price is now being matched against another older fighter, this one 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s). Price’s promoter Frank Maloney has reportedly announced that Skelton will be Price’s next fight. This was all set up really well, as Skelton just happened to have fought on the Price-Harrison undercard tonight beating Croatian heavyweight Jakov Gospic (11-5, 9 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO.

Price obliterates Harrison; Skelton defeats Gospic

Image: Price obliterates Harrison; Skelton defeats GospicBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten British heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) pretty much put Audley Harrison (28-6, 21 KO’s) out of his misery on Saturday night in stopping him in the 1st round at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom. Harrison, 40, hasn’t announced his retirement yet, but this loss will be very difficult for him to come back from.

Like in his loss to David Haye in 2010, Harrison froze up and failed to let his hands go in the first minute of action against the 6’8″ Price. This allowed Price to be the first one to land and once he did with his right hand, it sent Harrison reeling to the ropes where he was near helpless.

Skelton said in an interview at frankmaloney.com “Fingers crossed I’m hoping that’s what happens.

How perfect. Price beats one old guy in soon to be 41-year-old Harrison and then turning around and fighting the 45-year-old Skelton.

Image: Chisora-Skelton to join huge bill at Wembley Arena on 13th February - NewsBy Peter Wells: With Danny Williams-Sam Sexton set for 13th February 2010 at Wembley Arena – which Danny has said will be his last fight – Derek Chisora who was already announced to be on the bill will now fight former European Heavyweight boxing champion Matt Skelton. It is to be an eliminator for the British Heavyweight title. This is a big fight for Derek Chisora whom has already stopped Sam Sexton who will be the heavy favourite going into his British title shot, so a rematch would be a big chance for Derek to prove it wasn’t a fluke and is up their with the best.
