Image: Marco Huck interested in Wilder and Klitschko when he moves up to heavyweightPhoto credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (38-2-1, 26 KOs) has his sights set on some big game when he eventually moves up to the heavyweight division in the near future. Huck says he wants to fight WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (34-0, 33 KOs) and IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs).

Huck, 30, sees those two as guys he’d be very interested in fighting. Huck also has unfinished business with former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, who beat him by a narrow 12 round majority decision in 2012. However, the 6’2” Povetkin is a short heavyweight, and the things that Huck was able to get away with in fighting Povetkin at close range aren’t things that he’d be able to do against the much taller Wilder and Klitschko.

Is Bellew having second thoughts about fighting Marco Huck?

bellew6By Scott Gilfoid: After beating former WBO 175lb champion Nathan Cleverly by a 12 round split decision last November in a WBO cruiserweight title eliminator it was thought that Tony Bellew’s next move would be to face WBO champion Marco Huck (38-2-1, 26 KOs). After all, the Bellew-Cleverly fight was a WBO eliminator bout. But it now looks like Bellew is looking at the possibility of facing one of the other cruiserweight champions instead.

I was afraid this was going to happen. Huck is considered by many to be the best fighter in the cruiserweight division right now.

Weights: Huck 200, Larghetti 195.3

huck663(Photo credit: Team Sauerland) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs) made weight on Friday for his title defense against fringe contender #12 WBO Mirko Larghetti (21-0, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Gerry Weber Stadium, Halle, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Huck, 29, weighed in at 200 pounds and looked good as always. His opponent Larghetti weighed in at 195.3 pounds.

This fight is pretty much just a simple title defense for Huck, because the 31-year-old Larghetti is clearly not at the same talent level or even close to the same talent level as him. But the fight does have meaning for Huck, because a victory over Larghetti will be Huck’s 13th title defense of his WBO strap, which would tie him with former WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson for the most title defenses for a cruiserweight champion.

Marco Huck faces Mirko Larghetti on August 30th

huck67(Picture: Photo Wende) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (37-2, 26 KO’s) will making an optional title defense on August 30th against #13 WBO Mirko Larghetti (21-0, 13 KO’s) of Italy in a fight that will be staged at a yet to be determined venue in Germany. Larghetti, 31, has faced mild competition during his 5-year pro career. Larghetti’s last win was against a fighter named Attila Palko (17-13, 13 KO’s) last month.

Huck will be making his 13th defense of his WBO title strap, although you can make an argument that he should have lost it already because he was clearly beaten by Ola Afolabi in their second fight in 2012. That was the fight that scored a 12 round draw in which Huck was dominated in the first 6 rounds, and he appeared to lose at least 2 of the last 6 rounds.

Is it really in Bellew’s best interest to fight Huck this year?

huck453By Daven: For those who missed it, Tony the “bomber” Bellew emerged victorious on Saturday night against Valery Brudov. Barring one round which was the seventh the Liverpool native put in a measured performance. Moreover the power that had abandoned him at Light-heavyweight has seemingly returned. Despite securing two knock downs and then the knockout in the final round, it’s integral Bellew gets at least two fights in before going for a world title.

After the fight Eddie Hearn called out Marco huck who is widely regarded as the best cruiserwight on the planet. His most notable wins are over Afalobi who is already being avoided by Bellew so how Matchroom think Bellew is ready to fight somebody like Huck is beyond me. Yes, I am aware it would be for a world title but Huck’s arsenal is too skilful for Bellew meaning Bellew cannot outbox him and moreover Huck has a very good chin so Tony’s apparent power will not be a factor.
