Hearn: Manuel Charr is a great fight for Anthony Joshua

charr3434By Scott Gilfoid: Like many boxing fans, I was somewhat amused and shocked at hearing British heavyweight contender Anthony Joshua’s fast-talking promoter Eddie Hearn bring up the name of 2nd tier heavyweight Manuel Charr (28-3, 16 KOs) as a possible opponent for Joshua’s next fight on July 18th. The 30-year-old Charr has lost two out of his last four fights, and he’s no longer even ranked in the top 15.

Why Hearn would want to match Joshua up against Charr is unclear. I think it’s a fight on the same level as Joshua’s last opponent 35-year-old Kevin Johnson, who some fans felt looked no better than a punching bag last Saturday night against Joshua.

Manuel Charr a good option for Deontay Wilder’s first title defense

charr2By Scott Gilfoid: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) likely won’t get a chance at fighting either Tyson Fury or Wladimir Klitschko in his fight as the World Boxing Council champion.

Wladimir is already scheduled to fight on April 25th against American Bryant Jennings, and he’s likely going to need months to recover from that fight. As for Fury, we already know that he’s not truly interested in fighting Deontay next, because he wants to wait on the Wladimir fight.

Fury would rather face Wladimir rather than Wilder, which I can understand given the danger involved in facing the 6’7” Wilder.

Manuel Charr does some training at Mayweather Gym

charr78By Jim Dower: #10 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (27-2, 16 KOs) recently traveled to the United States for the World Boxing Council Convention. While in the U.S, the 30-year-old Charr trained a bit at the Mayweather boxing Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Charr was recently knocked out in the 7th round by Alexander Povetkin last May in a one-sided fight from start to finish. Since then, Charr bounced back from the defeat to beat 42-year-old Michael Grant by a 5th round stoppage last October.
While in the U.S, Charr also trained at the Wildcard Gym belonging to trainer Freddie Roach in Los Angeles.

Povetkin destroys Charr

YouTube video
By Jim Dower: #5 WBA Alexander Povetkin (27-1, 19 KO’s) showed the difference between him and #7 WBC Manuel Charr (26-2, 15 KO’s) in stopping him in the 7th round to win the vacant WBC International heavyweight title in a mostly one-sided fight at the Luzhniki, in Moscow, Russia.

Povetkin nailed Charr with a 4-punch combination in the 7th round to put Charr down on his back. The fight was then immediately halted due to Charr being too hurt to get back to his feet.

Povetkin nailed Charr with a huge left uppercut to the head that hurt him. Povetkin immediately fired off a looping right hook to the head that snapped Charr’s head around sideways. Povetkin then connected with a nice left hook that sent Charr falling backwards towards the referee. At this point Charr was in the process of falling, but Povetkin then added a tremendous right hand to the head that whip-lashed Charr’s head as he was falling. Charr partially hit the ropes while falling and came to rest on top of a large pad and photographer’s camera.

Alexander Povetkin v Manuel Charr this Friday

charr435By Gav Duthie: With all the recent Froch-Groves hype its easy to forget that Alexander Povetkin 26-1 (18) takes on Manuel Charr 26-1 (15) in Moscow, Russia this Friday night.

In order to avoid fighting for any of Wladimir Klitschko’s titles these two evenly matched heavyweights are adding their names to the long line targeting the WBC belt currently held by Bermaine Stiverne. The WBC international gong is on the line for the winner and would significantly move either fighter up the pecking order for a mandatory position with Stiverne. Manuel Charr is currently rated no. 6 and Povetkin is not yet rated as he was recently the WBA champ. However big bookies favourite Povetkin (1/6) would move right near the top with a win over Charr.

Charr takes risky fight against Povetkin in Moscow, Russia on May 30th

CharrPovetkinBy Allan Fox: The ambitious #7 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (26-1, 15 KO’s) will be taking a very risky fight for him against former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-1, 18 KO’s) this month on May 30th at a still to be determined venue in Moscow, Russia. The two fighters will be battling it out for the vacant WBC International heavyweight title, but that’s not what the main prize is. The winner of the Charr-Povetkin fight will get pushed up the WBC rankings nearer to the top.

For Charr, that’s an ideal situation, but it still won’t solve all of his problems. He’d still need to fight one of the top contenders in the division to become the mandatory, and there’s already a mandatory challenger in place in Deontay Wilder. Bryant Jennings and Michael Perez will be facing each other this month on May 24th in a second WBC heavyweight title eliminator, which means that Charr could wind up waiting for well over a year, possibly more before he gets a shot at the WBC heavyweight title even if he does get by Povetkin.

Manuel Charr wants Wladimir Klitschko world title shot

wladimir31By Allan Fox: Having fought former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and failed at capturing his title two years ago, #7 WBC Manuel Charr (26-1, 15 KO’s) is now looking to get a world title shot against Vitali’s brother IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (62-3, 52 KO’s) for his next fight.

Charr, 29, tried to get into the ring last night in Oberhausen, Germany to call Wladimir out in front of television reporters in the aftermath of Wladimir’s easy 5th round TKO win over Alex Leapai, but the German security personnel blocked Charr’s entrance into the ring. But that didn’t stop Charr from calling Wladimir out, as he created a Youtube video to relay his message to the Ukrainian fighter.

Weigh-in: Manuel Charr 242.5, Kevin Johnson 244.5

Johnson_Charr(Photo: Babak Shah Photography) By Allan Fox: #6 WBC heavyweight contender Manuel Charr (25-1, 15 KO’s) weighed in today for his 10 round fight on Saturday night against high level journeyman Kevin Johnson (29-5-1, 14 KO’s) at the Telekom Dome, Bonn, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Charr weighed in at 242.5lbs. This is a fight that Charr needs to keep moving forward to an eventual title shot against whoever emerges as the new WBC heavyweight champion.

It’s going to take Charr a while for him to get a title shot because he’s going to have to fight his way into a mandatory title shot. He doesn’t have a recognizable name to American or Canadian boxing fans, so the chances of him getting picked out for an optional title defense by the WBC champion are about zero.
