Chisora defeats Johnson in an ugly foul-filled fight

chisora445By Scott Gilfoid: Dereck Chisora (20-4,13 KO’s) defeated Kevin Johnson (29-5-1, 14 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision in a fight filled with massive amounts of rabbit punches by Chisora at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. The final judges scores were 118-109, 118-110, 118-109. Chisora got away with countless rabbit punches round after round despite the protests from Johnson.

For most of the fight, Chisora would plod forward throwing throwing wild shots that would either come around to hit Johnson in the back of the head or they’d sail around the back of his head and barely miss. It was incredibly to watch, and confusing how the referee just let Chisora get away with all those punches without taking off 6-8 points and disqualifying him.

Kevin Johnson with good chance against Chisora tonight

johnson343By Scott Gilfoid: Kevin Johnson (29-4-1, 14 KO’s) has the perfect opponent tonight for him to look good against and show his stuff against the short, round WBO International heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s). This is the kind of opponent that Johnson is usually able to jab his head off, and him look bad. Johnson has the physical skills and talent to box circles around Chisora and put on a jabbing clinic if he’s got his conditioning right.

That’s the only thing that could potentially keep Johnson from clowning Chisora and turning him into another Damian Wills or Alex Leapai. Chisora doesn’t have the boxing skills to beat Johnson by a decision. I mean, I can see Chisora winning a decision, but only if Johnson is out of shape or if we get yet another controversial fight result involving Chisora like we’ve seen in 2 out of his last 3 fights.

Weights: Chisora 238, Johnson 240

chisora56By Scott Gilfoid: Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) weighed in today at an in shape looking [for him] 238 lbs for his important fight against highly skilled veteran Kevin Johnson (29-4-1, 14 KO’s) for their fight tomorrow night. This is a must win for Chisora, because he needs a victory over the 34-year-old Johnson to move forward to his WBO heavyweight eliminator bout against Tyson Fury this Summer. In looking at the body language of the two during the weigh-in, it seemed to me like Chisora was afraid of Johnson.

I smelled fear in a big way from Chisora, especially when he had to stand face-to-face with Johnson for the stare down. Chisora didn’t try any of his tricks, and it’s a good thing too because Johnson doesn’t play that.

Kevin Johnson could wreck Chisora’s plans for Fury rematch

johnson343By Scott Gilfoid: 34-year-old Kevin Johnson (29-4-1, 14 KO’s) is in the position of being a potential spoiler in his clash next Saturday night against #2 WBO, #7 IBF, #7 WBC, #13 WBA Derek Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. Chisora has resurrected his once sagging career by beating 4 soft touches to pad his resume and get pushed up the rankings.

Chisora is now looking to avenge an earlier defeat a the hands of Tyson Fury by facing him this Summer in a British heavyweight showdown that could possibly be a heavyweight title eliminator bout. However, Chisora has looked mediocre in many of his recent fights, and he was staggered badly several times against his last little known opponent Ondrej Pala from last November.

Hughie Fury faces Matt Greer on Chisora-Johnson undercard on 2/15

fury5656By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s) will be facing journeyman Matt Greer (16-11, 13 KO’s) on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. The fight is scheduled for 8 rounds on the undercard of the Dereck Chisora vs. Kevin Johnson card. Fury’s cousin Tyson Fury will be on the same card in a bout against journeyman Gonzalo Omar Basile.

Greer has been in the ring recently with Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr. He was destroyed early by both guys, but he at least made it to the 2nd round against Deontay. Ruiz Jr. was able to take him out in the 1st round. It’ll be interesting to see how far Greer can make it with Hughie, because he’s not known for being much of a puncher.

Dereck Chisora vs. Kevin Johnson on Feb. 15th in London, UK

chisora214By Scott Gilfoid: EBU heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) will be facing 34-year-old Kevin Johnson (29-4-1, 14 KO’s) on February 15th at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. I had a feeling that Chisora would wind up facing Johnson because he’s relatively well known after having fought and lost to former WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko four years ago when Johnson was fighting at a much higher level than he is now.

Unfortunately, Johnson doesn’t appear to be the same fighter that fought Viali for his WBC title strap, as he’s lost 2 out of his last 3 fights in defeats against Christian and Tyson Fury.

Hennessy: Fury’s power had Johnson running for cover

Image: Hennessy: Fury's power had Johnson running for coverBy Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Mick Hennessy is seemingly in ecstasy after watching his fighter unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) beat up an under-trained Kevin Johnson (28-3-1, 13 kO’s) last Saturday night in a pretty much one-sided 12 round unanimous decision for Fury at the Odyssey Arena, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. The performance has Hennessy thinking Fury has the talent to win a world title in 2013, and Johnson seems to be on board with that belief.

Hennessy told express.co.uk “Tyson turns 25 next year and his early boxing education is now over as he needs to fight for the world title. His power had Johnson running for cover – and Johnson is quality.”

Kevin Johnson: Fury can beat the Klitschkos

Image: Kevin Johnson: Fury can beat the KlitschkosBy Scott Gilfoid: I think heavyweight Tyson Fury’s 12 round decision win over Kevin Johnson last Saturday night did something to him because Johnson is now saying that Fury punches harder than WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko and that he could beat the Klitschkos.

Johnson said to express.co.uk “Tyson Fury hits harder than anyone I’ve faced – and that includes Vitali Klitschko…Could he beat the Klitschkos? Yes, he could. I’ve fought and gone 12 rounds with Vitali Klitschko, so I should know.”

British Heavyweight Weekend: What did we learn?

Image: British Heavyweight Weekend: What did we learn?By Paul McT: Both Tyson Fury and David Price were in action over the last two days, both came away with a win but what did each fight say about how far these prospects have come?

Friday night boxing in Britain is uncommon, but a welcome addition nonetheless. Friday’s action was interesting, with Price fighting a tough weathered fighter in Matt Skelton, and Andrew ”Freddie” Flintoff  facing off against Richard Dawson, a fellow novice. The less said about the Flintoff fight the better, although I myself appreciate the publicity boxing received.

David Price: More of the same

Yet another brutal knockout victory for the softly spoken Price showcased his power, again. As impressive as his power is, the recent lack of rounds is dangerous, we have yet to see him being pushed or even have his defence tested.

Fury: I didn’t try to KO Johnson

Image: Fury: I didn't try to KO Johnsonby Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Tyson Fury (20-0, 14 KO’s) was loudly booed by his own boxing fans last night in the process of beating an unmotivated looking Kevin Johnson (28-3-1, 13 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 119-118, 119-110 and 119-108 in their WBC heavyweight eliminator in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Fury lacked the power to finish off a guy that was there for the taking. When you’ve got a fighter that isn’t throwing any punches like Johnson, the fans expect you to push the accelerator down to try and knock the guy out, but Fury didn’t have the power to do that. When he would unload with his best shots they were like slaps more than power shots and Johnson had no problems taking them.
