Santa Cruz wants Mayweather to fight Thurman in September

thurman5By Chris Williams: WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz is hoping that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) faces WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) for his final fight of his pro career in September, even though it would be a step down for Mayweather due to him holding the WBA Super World welterweight title.

Thurman holds the WBA regular 147lb title. Santa Cruz likes Thurman’s toughness and punching power, and he feels he would give Mayweather a hard fight if he were to be the guy that faced him.

Hearn looking at matching Joshua against David Price, Dillian Whyte or Chisora in September

joshua99By Scott Gilfoid: After Anthony Joshua’s easy 2nd round knockout victory over journeyman Kevin Johnson (29-7-1, 14 KOs) last Saturday night, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he wants to step Joshua up against the likes of Dillian Whyte, Dereck Chisora or David Price for his fight in September.

That’s when Hearn finally wants to step Joshua up a couple of levels. However, it’s unclear whether Hearn will be able to get any of those names at that time. I tend to doubt it unless he throws some crazy money at those guys. I don’t think for a second that Hearn is serious about wanting to match Joshua against Whyte because he already lost to Whyte in the amateurs in a fight where Joshua was knocked down and nailed repeatedly with bone-jarring shots.

Hearn mentions Rios, Thurman and Pacquiao as potential opponents for Brook

brook3By Allan Fox: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is interested in upgrading the opposition for his fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) following his noncompetitive fight against Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Hearn put together an in house fight between Brook and Rios, both of which he promotes, and the fight was disappointingly one-sided with Brook having his way from start to finish in a 6th round knockout victory. After the fight, Hearn mentioned being frustrated that Amir Khan won’t agree to fight Brook.

Thurman: Pacquiao is no longer second or third best at welterweight

thurman5By Chris Williams: If you listen to WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman talk, he says that Manny Pacquiao is no longer even the No.2 or No.3 fighter in the 147 pound division. Thurman thinks that there are several other fighters in the welterweight division besides Floyd Mayweather Jr. that can beat Pacquiao.

Thurman doesn’t say who those fighters are, but my guess is he’s counting himself, Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana and Kell Brook as the fighters that he feels could beat Pacquiao.

That’s actually four fighters, but I think that might be the case.

Keith Thurman wants to fight Kell Brook

thurman5By Scott Gilfoid: In what could be an act of futility, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (25-0, 21 KOs) is calling out IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) for a unification fight in what would be the battle of the unbeaten. Thurman sees Brook as a guy that is already 29-years-old, and clearly ready to be fighting guys at the top tier. However, Brook is currently scheduled to fight #5 IBF Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) in what shapes up to be a mismatch this month on May 30th.

Before that, Brook had another mismatch against Jo Jo Dan. Getting Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn to agree to finally put Brook in with a live opponent not named Amir Khan, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao may prove to be impossible because Hearn is hoping that Brook will get a fight against one or more of those fighters someday.

Amir Khan and Keith Thurman striving for next shot at Mayweather

Amir Khan vs Devon AlexanderBy Raj Parmar: Last Saturday the one fighter that most boxing fans thought could be the one to halt pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO’s) fell short in his attempt. Manny Pacquiao (57-6, 38 KO’s) will now join 47 other opponents on Mayweather’s “48-0” customary t-shirt that depicts the names of all his career wins inside the boxing ring.

Floyd cruised through a relatively one-sided affair against Manny in which the Filipino boxing sensation could not break through Mayweather’s vaunted defense. After the bout, talks in the post-fight press conference already turned to who Floyd would be fighting next.

Boxingnews24 knockout mailbag: Beterbiev/Alvarez, Khan/Thurman/Brook, Rigo/Morales and more

beterbiev1022By Sebastian Mora: This is the second mailbag. I answered 5 questions this time, if your opinion or question is not here I will try my best to answer it on the next Boxingnews24 knockout mailbag.

Kelly: I have seen  your article regarding Artur Beterbiev. I agree with most of what you said. I only have one question.

What would Eleider Alvarez do that other opponents have not done? I feel that hes overrated, has conditioning problems, and does not have the best technique. I think Cloud and Campillo (Sorry if I dont spell his name correctly) are still better than Eleider Alvarez. If I was Beterbiev manager, I would be trying to put him against Pascal or Chilemba!
