Diaz vs. McCloskey on 5/5: Can get Julio get a fair shake in Belfast?

By William Mackay: Former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (38-7, 27 KO’s) gets to the next fighter that tries his hand at attempting to beat Ireland’s Paul McCloskey (23-1, 12 KO’s) on May 5th at the King’s Hall in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Diaz, 32, is likely going to have to be especially impressive in this fight in order to walk out of the King’s Hall with the win, because we saw last September how hard it can be for someone to beat the 32-year-old McCloskey, #9 WBA, in Belfast.

Diaz-Malignaggi II – Time for revenge

malig42335By Peter Wells: This is Paulie Malignaggi’s big chance to erase the first controversial defeat to Juan Diaz, and maybe his last big shot in boxing. Just this August the two fought in a bout most expected Diaz to win quite comfortably, but it was anything but comfortable. And in a very controversial decision Diaz took it even getting a 118-110 in his favour, which was outrageous. But it revealed that Houston does have a big problem, but luckily they are now fighting in Chicago. Obviously we wouldn’t have been in this situation if the bout had have been anywhere else in the world, but here you have it, time for another- this time more personal- war.

Diaz Stops Torres

diaz573333453.jpgBy Chet Mills: Former two-time lightweight champion Julio Diaz (35-4, 26 KOs) was far too much for his over-matched opponent David Torres (20-1, 13 KOs), taking him out in the 5th round of a badly one-sided fight that was scheduled for 10-rounds at the Playboy Mansion, in Beverly Hills, California, on Wednesday night. Diaz, 28, making his first appearance since losing his IBF lightweight title in a 9th round stoppage to Juan Diaz in October 2007, knocked Torres, 30, down two times in the fight, once in the third round (a technical knockdown) and another time in the 5th round.

Following the knockdown in the 5th, Torres, whose left side of his face was badly swollen with his left eye nearly swollen shut, was examined by the ringside doctor who advised for the referee to stop the fight. At 1;25, referee Tony Krebs stopped the fight giving Diaz the victory.

Juan Diaz Stops Julio Diaz

diaz44433.jpgFormer International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Julio Diaz’s (34-4, 25 KOs) busy fighting style was no match for the hard-punching World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association lightweight champion Juan Diaz (33-0, 17 KOs) who blasted him round after round with multiple combinations until Julio ultimately quit at the beginning of the 9th round on Saturday night at the Sears Centre, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. With the win, the 24-year old Juan Diaz adds the IBF lightweight title to his collection of belts, clearly showing that he’s the dominant fighter in the lightweight division.

Before the bout, there was speculation that Julio’s high punch volume would cause problems for Juan, enough possibly for Julio to create an upset. However, after the first couple of rounds, Juan put that thought completely out of mind as he pummeled Julio with blistering three and four punch combinations to the head and body.
