Mikey Garcia needs to skip 130 and go straight to 135

garcia54By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) had a couple of excuses for why he couldn’t make weight for his fight against Juan Manuel Lopez. Garcia started out by saying he was sick for a number of days, and then he later mentioned that his diet wasn’t good for the fight.

Mikey said he would be moving up in weight to super featherweight on a trial basis, but I think he’s kidding himself. It’s time for Mikey to move up to lightweight [135]. If he’s struggling this bad to make 126, then it’s clearly time for him to make the move to skip super featherweight and go straight to lightweight.

Mikey Garcia says he’s moving to super featherweight as an experiment

garcia515By Chris Williams: Fresh off his impressive 4th round TKO win last night against Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) in Dallas, Texas, former WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) says he’s planning on moving up to the super featherweight [130 lbs] as an experiment to see how he feels in this weight class.

If he does well at this weight, Mikey will stay. If not, then he plans on working on his diet and coming back down to 126 lbs.

Mikey said this to HBO about his plans: “I still think I can fight at the featherweight limit. With the proper training and proper diet, I feel like I can still do it. I got a little sick. I’m sure a lot of fighters go through that too, and that is probably the reason why I had problems making weight.

Mikey Garcia vs. Juan Manuel Lopez: When fighters don’t make weight

garcia564By Gerardo Granados: Former WBO featherweight belt holder Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) defeated former two-division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) last night in Dallas, Texas, but was it a fair match up? If you train hard and control your food intake you will make the division weight limit; on times it will take a tremendous effort and on a couple of times it might weakened you to the point that your performance at the fight will be affected. But what happens when due pressure of money issues, television arrangements or the hunger of a brave fighter it is allowed to a fighter to take only two pounds of weight advantage?

Mikey Garcia didn’t just fail to make the weight division limit but also chose not to try and take off the weight after a certain point.

Mikey too big for Juanma; beats him with size

garcia55By Dan Ambrose: You’ve got to feel a little bit sorry for Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3, 30 KO’s) tonight after his 4th round TKO loss to the much heavier looking Mikey Garcia (32-0, 27 KO’s) in Dallas, Texas. Mikey had failed to make weight the day earlier in giving up his WBO featherweight title on the scales.

It looked like Mikey had decided to either win the fight on size or lose the fight by making weight. Mikey chose to win, and he came in over the limit. I wish there was a scale to put Mikey on as he entered the ring because he looked at least 15-20 pounds heavier to me compared to Juanma. There was no way Juanma could beat a fighter as big as Mikey is; it wasn’t going to happen.
