Arce-Darchinyan: Jorge Faces A Uphill Battle

darchinyan2343By Dan Ambrose: IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) defends his titles against former light flyweight champion Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) on February 7th at The Pond, in Anaheim, California. In every which way you look at this fight, it seems like Arce, 29, has little chance at winning. Indeed, this fight seems like a fight destined to be a terrible mismatch with Darchinyan ultimately destroying Arce.

darchinyan3241334By Dave Lahr: Two-time former light flyweight champion and current interim WBA super flyweight champion Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) will be facing IBF/WBC super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (31-1-1, 25 KOs) in a title match on February 7th at The Pond, in Anaheim, California. This figures to be a tough fight for Arce, 29, who has a history of cuts and will be probably finding his face tested often by the titanic shots that Darchinyan will be throwing his way.

Arce Stops Garcia

arce644.jpgBy Tim Williams: Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light flyweight champion Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) overcame an unsteady start, in which he took a lot of punishment, to come and strop former World Boxing Organization (WBO) flyweight champion Isidro Garcia (25-6-2, 8 KOs) in the 4th round to win the interim WBA super flyweight title at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arce, an old 29, hurt Garcia with a left to the body in the 4th round, and then hurt him with a left to the head. Arce then dropped him with a left to the body. After Garcia got up, Arce backed him up to the ropes where he unleashed a flurry of unanswered punches ending with referee Tony Weeks stepping in and halting the fight at 0:48 of the 4th round. Afterwards, Arce called out super bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez.

In the first round, Garcia, 32, pounced on Arce, pounding away at him with fast punches to the body and head, and showing that he had the faster hands than the slightly younger Arce. Initially, Arce tried to stay on the outside, moving around the ring and using his jab. However, Garcia quickly cut off the ring on Arce, forcing him to abandon his strategy of boxing and making him slug it out with him.

Arce Defeats Lookmahanak

arce54433.jpgBy William MacKay: Former WBC light flyweight champion Jorge Arce (49-4-1, 37 KOs) won a close 12-round majority decision on Saturday night against Devid Lookmahanak (18-2, 9 KOs) to win the WBC super flyweight eliminator at the Plaza Monumental, Aguascalientes, in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Arce, 28, was staggered in the 4th round by a powerful left hand by Lookmahanak. However, Arce, 28, came back and dropped Lookmahanak in the 7th round with a left uppercut.

The knockdown, however, appeared to be aided by the wet canvas, which caused Lookmahanak to slip just as the punch was being thrown. Both fighters had previously been having problems with the canvas, which was covered with water from previous bouts on the card, causing both Arce and Lookmahanak to slip many times in the fight before and after the knockdown. Arce, known for his power and his aggressive style of fighting, appeared oddly subdued against Lookmahanak, but that appeared more out of necessity than by accidental cause, because Lookmahanak was the much harder puncher and would punish Arce when he came in wildly.

Arce KOs Rojas

arce75.jpgFormer light flyweight and flyweight boxing champion Jorge Arce (47-4-1, 36 KOs) , fighting for the first time at bantamweight, looked positively dreadful as he rallied to defeat unheralded Tomas Rojas (26-11 18 KOs) in a sixth round TKO on Sunday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arce, who is coming off a title losing bout to Cristian Mijares on April 14, 2007, fought like he still hadn’t recovered from that bout, as he was utterly dominated by Rojas for five of the six rounds of the fight until he launched a left hook to the body in the sixth round that knocked Rojas down. Arce ended things shortly after Rojas dragged himself off the canvas by greeting him with a nice flurry of punches.

However, the KO didn’t erase the image of how poorly Arce fought against Rojas, because he truly looked as if he didn’t belong in the same ring with the B-level bantamweight fighter. Granted, it’s one thing to say that Arce was making his first appearance as a bantamweight, and perhaps should be given a break; However, it’s not a good indication of how things will be for him in the near future if he can’t beat someone at the level.
