Hunter: Calzaghe would have been tailor made for Andre Ward; we’d chew him up

Image: Hunter: Calzaghe would have been tailor made for Andre Ward; we'd chew him upBy Scott Gilfoid: Virgil Hunter, the trainer for WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) revealed in an interview today what I already knew in my mind that Joe Calzaghe would have been an easy fight for Ward had he fought him in his prime. Calzaghe was too sloppy and horribly flawed to beat a fighter like Ward All that useless bouncing that Calzaghe did when fighting. So awful to look at. Ward would have taken advantage of that in a second.

Hunter told Eastsideboxing.com “The fact of the matter is Joe Calzaghe would have been tailor made for us. There are just certain things that he did that we could have chewed him up, like bouncing in place. You know, we would have threw that completely off…He would have a problem.”

Joe Calzaghe: I would’ve beaten Andre Ward

Image: Joe Calzaghe: I would’ve beaten Andre WardBy Marcus Stewart: Former unified super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe believes that he would’ve beaten the current unified super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Calzaghe said to CJG Talk Boxing “I’d beat him. I believe he’s a good fighter but I’d beat him. I’d be too busy, have too many angles and I’d be too strong.” In my eyes it’s a no brainer. Joe Calzaghe would absolutely destroy the overrated American Andre Ward. Joe Calzaghe fought everyone and instead of grabbing and holding them he went toe to toe with them but also boxed methodically like a true champion.

Andre Ward or Joe Calzaghe: Who would win?

Image: Andre Ward or Joe Calzaghe: Who would win?By Steven Ocallaghan: Respected boxing journalist Steve Bunce has opened up a great debate in who would win in a Joe Calzaghe v Andre Ward fight, and I would have to agree with Bunce, Calzaghe every time.

You can compare some of the fighters each has faced or past opponents who have face each other and I still have to say Calzaghe.

Ward is a great fighter, but also can fight dirty at times who comes in with his head and follows up with elbows, but there was no better fighter than Calzaghe for adapting to the required situation. Ward had a good win, but a win over a weight drained Chad Dawson, also a great but tough win over Carl Froch.

Bunce: Calzaghe would beat Ward

Image: Bunce: Calzaghe would beat WardBy Scott Gilfoid: There seems to be a dispute among boxing fans about who would win in a fight between a prime Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) and WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s). A lot of Brits seem to favor Calzaghe beating Ward for some reason, whereas non-Brits from other parts of the world pretty much all see Ward schooling Calzaghe badly and handing him his first loss of his career.

British writer Steve Bunce is another one of those people who think that Calzaghe would beat Ward, saying to ESPN.co.uk “Let’s get one thing straight: A peak Calzaghe – the one that walked through Jeff Lacy and did jobs on Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr – would beat any version of Ward. It is not even up for dispute.”

Andre Ward – the greatest super middleweight that ever breathed; Calzaghe takes a backseat

Image: Andre Ward - the greatest super middleweight that ever breathed; Calzaghe takes a backseatby Scott Gilfoid: I think it’s fair to say that WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) proved that he’s the best fighter ever at super middleweight in beating Bad Chad Dawson (31-2, 17 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO last Saturday night in Oakland, California.

I don’t want to drizzle on the parade of former IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s), because he was a decent fighter during his day, but I think it’s pretty clear that Ward would have totally dominated Calzaghe if he was to have ever fought him.

Calzaghe and Froch pick Haye to easily beat Chisora on Saturday

Image: Calzaghe and Froch pick Haye to easily beat Chisora on SaturdayBy Sean McDaniel: Very few boxing fans and sports writers are picking Dereck Chisora (15-3, 9 KO’s) to come out victorious in his fight against former two division world champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) on Saturday night. You can add IBF super middleweight champion and former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe to the growing ranks that see Haye as being too good for Chisora.

Froch and Calzaghe against Ricky Hatton comeback fight

Image: Froch and Calzaghe against Ricky Hatton comeback fightBy William Mackay: For the past couple of weeks there’s been rumors of a comeback fight for Ricky Hatton against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi. It’s still unknown whether Hatton will make the comeback, but he’s lost a lot of weight recently and looked to be within 20 to 25 pounds of making welterweight if he decides on coming back. Malignaggi says he’d love to face Hatton again to try and avenge a knockout loss to him in 2008.

Froch vs. Calzaghe. Who would have won?

Image: Froch vs. Calzaghe. Who would have won?By Mark Havey: It’s a fight that Carl Froch (29-2, KO’s 21) had been demanding for a while. Joe Calzaghe (46-0, KO’s 32) was the dominant champion who it seemed would never lose, and he never did. Froch was the youthful prospect calling out the bigger names at every chance.
