Calzaghe: “I still don’t think Kelly Pavlik has really proven himself”

calzagher5555.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Sounding a lot like the fox in Aesop’s fable of the “Fox and the grapes,” Joe Calzaghe recently said “I still don’t think Kelly Pavlik has really proven himself,” a comment made to Setanta Sports as a reason for Calzaghe to have bypassed Pavlik and instead choosing to fight the 39 year-old Roy Jones Jr. The comment seems rather disingenuous considering that Pavlik has recently beaten Jermain Taylor, not once, but twice in succession. Calzaghe himself recently defeated Bernard Hopkins, who was twice beaten by Taylor, which makes Calzaghe’s excuse seem a little more than unbelievable.

By seemingly downgrading Pavlik, Calzaghe appears to be denying his desire for something that he perhaps feels that may not have the ability to succeed at. In other words, if you he doesn’t think he could beat Pavlik, then why not fire away at him with comments about him not having proven himself in the past. The problem with that, however, is that few boxing fans appear to be buying what Calzaghe is saying. I can’t see too many people in agreement with Calzaghe on his views about Pavlik not having proven himself, since Pavlik did after all beat Taylor twice, and is about to likely beat Hopkins as well. It just seems like a sad excuse to me, one made in an effort to avoid a harsh reality. Calzaghe, if he truly believes that Pavlik hasn’t proven himself, then he seems to be somewhat deluded, a step behind what’s going on in boxing.

Calzaghe To Face Jones Then Retire – No Fight For Pavlik

calzaghe5597.jpgBy Michael Lieberman: In an interview with Setanta Sports News, undefeated super middleweight Joe Calzaghe remarked that he plans on fighting one more time on November 8th against Roy Jones Jr, and then retire from the sport, saying “I’ve achieved everything I can in boxing.” The comment is more than mildly amusing considering that Jones is 39 years-old, not much of a threat to any top fighter in either the super middleweight or light heavyweight divisions. Kelly Pavlik, the undefeated WBA/WBO middleweight champion, remains out there as a bit of unfinished business for Calzaghe, who previously said that he was interested in fighting him.

Calzaghe, however, later changed his mind shortly after watching Pavlik easily dispatch his countryman Gary Lockett in three brutal rounds. In a move very similar to Oscar De La Hoya’s sudden cold feet after watching Antonio Margarito thrash Miguel Cotto in July, Calzaghe did an immediate about face, turning his attention into the relative toothless Roy Jones Jr. as an opponent. At the time, it was thought that Calzaghe would fight him and then take on Pavlik. However, Calzaghe has seemed to have all the fight sucked out, and now all he wants to do is get out of boxing following the Jones fight. It’s more than sad, because Calzaghe’s career has been disappointing, for despite his impressive record, there’s very little substance in there.

Will Calzaghe be Branded A Coward If He Retires Without Facing Pavlik?

calzaghe335333.jpgBy Michael Lieberman: Undefeated super middleweight Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) has made it no secret that he’d like to retire with his undefeated record intact, and with his boxing legacy unblemished with any ugly defeats that would mar his record. In the past several months, however, he’s been pursued steadily by unbeaten WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (34-0, 30 KOs), who has gone to great lengths in order to try and land a fight with him. Even though Pavlik is the smaller fighter, he’s willing to take the risky bout because he knows that he’ll ultimately earn more respect from the boxing public, and be rewarded by receiving even bigger paydays should he come out on the winning end of such a fight.

Calzaghe, though, has opted to take the safe route, taking a nice comfortable bout against the totally shot Roy Jones Jr. on November 8th, at the Madison Square Garden, in New York City, New York. It’ll give Calzaghe, who wants to get as much money he can before retiring from boxing, a nice payday at a minimum of risk. The drawback to that, however, is that it’s not a fight that the boxing public, in large part, want to see, with most of them preferring the try and shut the trap of Pavlik by any means necessary.

Calzaghe-Jones, Pavlik-Hopkins, De La Hoya-Pacquiao: Is Boxing In a Race To The Bottom?

jones464346664.jpgBy Tony Krebs: Just looking at the current state of boxing now with fighters like Kelly Pavlik facing 43 year-old former champion Bernard Hopkins rather than other more deserving middleweights, undefeated Joe Calzaghe avoiding his top super middleweight opponents to fight a 39 year-old Roy Jones Jr, and then for the kicker of them all, Oscar De La Hoya taking on Manny Pacquiao, a fighter that he outweighs by 25 lbs. There is certainly a great deal of ridicule that has occurred due to these bouts, as it seems to have made a mockery of the different weight classes, removing established weight boundaries, turning things into a state of chaos in which only what brings about the most money seems to count.

Forget about taking on your number one mandatory, these fighters seem to be out for one thing – the most money they can get for a fight. I suppose it wouldn’t matter so much if it didn’t affect other fighters in their weight classes, ones that are being overlooked just so these fighters can get a chance for a big payday. However, I don’t see it as being fair to the other fighters in the division, nor to boxing either. If someone like Kelly Pavlik, the WBC/WBO middleweight champion, is taking on fighters like Hopkins as 170, what happens to other fighters that may have had a chance to show their talent if given the chance against Pavlik?

Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr. On November 8th

calzaghe464444437.jpgBy Dean Harman: Undefeated Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) and Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) are ready to end their boxing careers on November 8th in a 12-round mega fight scheduled at the Madison Square Garden, in New York. After the fight was previously postponed because of an injury to Calzaghe, it will finally be taking place on three months from now, barring any more injuries to the brittle hands of the 35 year-old Calzaghe. In terms of excitement, this bout is just barely more interesting in the last fight of Calzaghe’s against 43 year-old Bernard Hopkins in April, which Calzaghe won by a 12-round split decision.

Seemingly no longer concerned with taking on competitive fights against highly ranked opponents, Calzaghe is looking to take this last fight for the big money that it brings in. Like the last fight, a dull fight by most accounts, this will be a good payday for both fighters, despite Jones’s lack of success in the ring in the past four years. For many boxing fans, this fight has come about far too late in Jones’ once great career, because at 39, he’s well past his prime and no longer has the speed or boxing ability that he once possessed earlier in his career.

Calzaghe Injures Wrist, Will Fight Jones In November

cal5733535.jpgBy Eric Thomas: In the latest boxing news, undefeated super middleweight Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) injured his right wrist while training on a heavy bag for his upcoming September 20th bout with Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. However, the bout will go ahead anyway a month in November unless the 36 year-old Calzaghe re-injures his wrist again. According to his father, Enzo Calzaghe, who told Setanta Sports that the fight will continue and that Joe just needs a little extra time to recover from his wrist injury, which suddenly swelled up after a heavy pad workout.

Joe Calzaghe has a history of injuries usually involving his left hand rather than his right, which has caused him to postpone other bouts. However, given his history of hand injuries it makes sense for him to take the time off rather than risk taking the fight and end up fighting with only one hand and losing to Jones. Calzaghe didn’t exactly impress in his last fight against Bernard Hopkins in April, a fight that Calzaghe narrowly won by a 12-round split decision. Many boxing fans felt that it was the 43 year-old Hopkins that actually should have been awarded the fight due to his harder and cleaner landing shots in comparison to Calzaghe’s slapping shots.

Joe Calzaghe To Fight On After Bout With Jones

calzaghe4646444.jpgBy Nate Anderson: Undefeated light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) is reportedly going to continue his boxing career after his September 20th fight with Roy Jones Jr. in Madison Square Garden, New York City, and he plans to move back down to the super middleweight division where he intends on defending his WBO title. Calzaghe, 36, has reportedly sent a fax to the President of the WBO, letting him know his intentions of defending the WBO title after he fights Jones in September.

Needless to say, this is quite extraordinary news for most boxing fans, many of who have previously thought that Calzaghe would be retiring immediately after he fights Jones. In interviews, Calzaghe has been saying that the Jones fight would be his last, and that he didn’t wish to continue fighting because he had nothing to prove. Previous to that, Calzaghe had been hinting at fighting undefeated middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, who was also quite interested in a fight with Calzaghe. It’s uncertain now, however, whether Calzaghe would be merely interested in defending his WBO title against one of the top three contenders – Mikkel Kessler, Jean Pascal and Carl Froch – or seeking out a bout with Pavlik.

Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr. To Happen At MSG on September 20th

jones33221.jpgBy William MacKay: In recent boxing news, it seems as if undefeated light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) has finally found a home for his final bout of his career against 5-time champion Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs), with the bout likely taking place at New York’s Madison Square Garden on 20 September. The two had previously been considering making the fight in Las Vegas, but it appears now that it will be taking place in New York. Calzaghe, 36, has said that this will be his last fight of his career, as he doesn’t wish to continue on after this and face other more exciting fights like ones against Kelly Pavlik.

Most fans aren’t too particularly pleased with Calzaghe’s choice of fighting the 39 year-old Jones, who many feel is a faded and washed up fighter, having left his best behind him five years ago when he defeated John Ruiz for the WBA heavyweight title. It’s been pretty much a downward spiral since then, however, as Jones has frequently lost, getting beaten by Glen Johnson, and twice more by Antonio Tarver. Perhaps not wanting to experience that feeling again, Jones has lowered the level of his opposition considerably in recent years, defeating fringe light heavyweight Anthony Hanshaw in a controversial 12-round unanimous decision in July 2007, and before that beating a non-top 15 ranked Prince Badi Ajamu.

Joe Calzaghe Gives Up WBC Title For Bout With Roy Jones Jr.

cal57454.jpgBy Sean McDaniel: In a move to avoid having to face his dangerous mandatory Carl Froch, undefeated super middleweight Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) earlier today gave up his WBC super middleweight title, thus putting him in the position to take on Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) for later on this year. In the meantime, Froch will be going ahead and possibly taking on Jermain Taylor for Calzaghe’s vacated WBC super middleweight title. The move by Calzaghe, 36, is especially disappointing one for many of his boxing fans, who had hoped that he would take on a better opponent than Jones, preferably the unbeaten knockout artist Kelly Pavlik, who has been especially keen on fighting Calzaghe.

However, Calzaghe had stated publicly that he’s not interested in fighting Palik, saying that he’s not in the same class as Calzaghe and would only end up losing.

Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr. In September?

calzaghe45344.jpgBy William MacKay: In the latest boxing news, five-time world champion boxer Roy Jones Jr. (52-4, 38 KOs) is saying that he’ll be fighting Joe Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) likely in September, and that the fight will possibly be taking place in Las Vegas rather than Calzaghe’s native Wales. This bout will be Calzaghe’s last fight, as he’s decided to skip over the idea of facing undefeated middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, who Calzaghe feels isn’t up to his level. As things work out, Calzaghe’s decision to end with only the Jones fight leaves pretty much all of his boxing fans greatly disappointed, for they wanted to see him fight the power-punching Pavlik, who is considered by many to be the best fighter in the middleweight division bar none.

The decision to fight Jones rather than Pavlik is especially bad, in that it makes Calzaghe look more than a little afraid to many people in the boxing community. Worse, however, is Calzaghe’s excuses to try and explain it away, suggesting that Pavlik would only lose if they fought and that he’s not up to his level, all of which seem rather evasive, as if he’s hiding the real reason why he’s not interested in fighting Pavlik.
