Gilberto Ramirez: Brook has no chance against Golovkin

By Dan Ambrose: WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez says he doesn’t like the September 10 fight between unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) and unbeaten welterweight Kell “Special K” Brook (36-0, 25 KOs), because he doesn’t think Brook has any chance of winning the fight. Ramirez thinks Brook will try moving around the ring for two or three rounds, but the match will end as soon as Triple G lands one of his big shots.

“For me, I don’t like the fight, but if you want to fight with me, then let’s do it,” said Ramirez to fighthub.com. “No, I don’t give him [Brook] a chance. I think he’s going to move around for two or three rounds, but when Gennady throws a good punch, he’s going to knock him out. One punch,” said Ramirez.

By Dan Ambrose: WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez’s hand surgery has been deemed a success. The 25-year-old Ramirez had suffer on a torn ligament in his right knuckle that he suffered while training for a fight against little known German fringe contender Dominik Britsch.

Ramirez was supposed to fight Britsch in the co-feature bout on the Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol card this Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Ramirez vs. Britisch fight would have likely been a mismatch, but that was the whole point. It was a voluntary defense and showcase fight for the 6’2” Ramirez.

By Allan Fox: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is looking to find a suitable replacement fight to fill in for the co-feature bout on the July 23 card on HBO PPV. Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol is he headliner, but their previously scheduled co-feature bout between WBO upper middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and Dominik Britsch was cancelled on Wednesday due to Ramirez suffering a hand injury that will require surgery.

Gilberto Ramirez to miss five months with hand injury

By Allan Fox: WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs) suffered a hand injury this week on Tuesday during a sparring session. The injury is to the extent that Ramirez, 25, will need to pull out of his scheduled fight against challenger Dominik Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) for the July 23 card that was scheduled for HBO PPV. Ramirez won’t be able to fight for five months, as his hand will need surgery.

The injury could delay Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s plans of matching Ramirez against unbeaten middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. The 84-year-old Arum wanted to put Ramirez in with Golovkin in early 2017 after having him fight two more times in 2016. That’s not going to happen now due to Ramirez’s hand injury.

The injury was bad enough for the 25-year-old Ramirez to be pulled from the July 23 fight card, where he was supposed to be defending his WBO super middleweight title against #10 WBO Dominik Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Ramirez vs. Britsch fight was supposed to have been the chief support for the Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol fight.

This is an important fight for Ramirez, because he needs a victory to get to potential bigger fights this year and in 2017 against possibly Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.

Ramirez, 25, doesn’t just want to win the fight. He wants to win and put on a great performance in giving the boxing world a war that will make them happy. For Ramirez to accomplish his goal of turning the fight into a brawl, he’ll need to fight the opposite of the way he fought his last fight against former WBO 168lb champion Arthur Abraham last April.

Arum will be matching the 25-year-old Ramirez against middleweight star Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in early 2017, and he believes that the 6’2” Ramirez will win that fight thanks to his four inch height and five inch reach advantage over the Kazakhstan fighter.

Arum sees a victory for Ramirez over Golovkin as a fight that will transform the Mexican fighter into a pay-per-view attraction on HBO. Whether that happens or not is debatable. Ramirez may need to do a lot more than beating the 34-year-old Golovkin for him to become a PPV attraction.

Smith, 6’3”, has a great deal of respect for the talented 6’2 ½” Ramirez, and he feels that he’s going to be around for a long time as a top fighter.

Ramirez is only 24-years-old and already a world champion after whipping Arthur Abraham by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision last April to capture the WBO super middleweight title from the German fighter. Ramirez will be making his first defense of his WBO strap next month on July 23 against #11 WBO fringe contender Dominik Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view on the Terence Crawford vs. Viktor Postol card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ramirez is expected to make easy work of the 28-year-old German Britsch.

While the fight has been talked about taking place in early 2017, there is an outside chance that we could see the two fighters facing each other at the end of this year if Ramirez wins his next fight on July 23 against #11 WBO Dominik Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) – and if Golovkin’s promoters at K2 Promotions aren’t able to negotiate a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

By Dan Ambrose: WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (34-0, 24 KOs) says he cannot drop down in weight from 168 to fight IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin at a lower weight in their planned fight for early next year. Ramirez, 24, and his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank say they cannot drop from 168 to fight Golovkin at a catch-weight.

Ramirez is already big for the super middleweight division, and asking him to move down further to accommodate a catch-weight for Golovkin is a non-starter.
