Whatever happened to the heavyweight division?

ali3By Tony Crooks: As a young boy, I grew up watching the great fights that went on to be legend. I am not going to mention those fights to you, as you as boxing fans will know exactly what I am talking about. The younger boxing fans out there can use the internet to discover and educate themselves on the history of boxing and personally watch the true stories unfold.

We all know of Muhammad Ali & Joe Frazier, the formidable George Foreman who used to be a devastating fighter before he made low fat cooking grills. I mentioned George Foreman to my son and told him that he had one of the hardest punches ever, he looked at me and laughed and said:” Do you mean the big bald guy that sells health grills.” In all honesty and in sadness and in respect of this great fighter, I politely told my son that he was mistaken.

George Foreman and Felix Trinidad celebrate birthdays today

foreman454By Allan Fox: Former 1968 U.S Olympic heavyweight Gold medalist and former IBF/WBA/WBC World heavyweight champion George Foreman (76-5, 68 KO’s) turns 64 today. Also, former three division world champion Felix “Tito” Trinidad (42-3, 35 KO’s) turns 40 today.

Trinidad was one of the best welterweights in boxing in the 1990s, beating the likes of Hector Camacho, Oba Carr, Freddie Pendleton, Maurice Blocker, Pernell Whitaker, David Reid, Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Vargas. In 2000, Trinidad moved up to light middleweight and captured the WBA World light middleweight title with a win over David Reid. He then beat Marmadou Thiam, Vargas, and William Joppy.

George Foreman: Vitali is as good as any of the past champions

Image: George Foreman: Vitali is as good as any of the past championsBy Eric Thomas: Big George Foreman (76-5, 68 KO’s) gave WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) a big compliment after his win over Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) last weekend, saying on his twitter “The champ Klitschko is as good as any other of the past champs. Better than me.”

Now that is a big compliment to be sure, because Foreman was well respected during his prime in the early 70s. However, after beating then WBA/WBC heavyweight champion Joe Frazier by a 2nd round knockout in January 1973, Foreman was only able to successfully defend the title twice, beating Jose Roman and Ken Norton before losing the belts to a 32-year-old Muhammad Ali in October 1974.

The Top Five Greatest Chins in the Heavyweight Division – All time

Image: The Top Five Greatest Chins in the Heavyweight Division - All timeBy Tommaso Nappo: The list was compiled based on the criteria of ability to take a punch, and quality of opposition. It does not I repeat does not take into account the individual fighters skill level or accomplishments. Some of those that earned an honorable mention were current fighters – David Tua, Vitali Klitchko, Oliver McCall,. These guys can all take big time shots, but the quality of big time punchers faced is limited.

Adamek vs. 1973 version of George Foreman: Who wins?

Image: Adamek vs. 1973 version of George Foreman: Who wins?By Scott Gilfoid: Okay, I saw the fight last night between Tomasz Adamek and Michael Grant, and I thought Adamek did a pretty good job under the circumstances. He really didn’t look that bad other than a few hard punches he took in the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th. Adamek handled the situation pretty well after getting hit hard by Grant and got out of the way quick to avoid getting hit again. I think Adamek has a chance against the Klitschko brothers. I don’t give him a very good chance, but I think he still has a slim chance of beating one of them.

Why Didn’t Ali Give George Foreman a Rematch?

foreman443By Chris Williams: For those who remember the great Muhammad Ali’s shocking 8th round stoppage of the then unbeaten George Foreman on October 30th in 1974, they saw a great fight from Ali in which he used a now famous rope a dope, along with a lot of pawing and clinching to tire out and eventually stop a young 26 year-old Foreman in the hot outside ring in the Democratic Republic Of The Congo. What people don’t remember, however, is that Foreman pursued Ali afterwards trying to get a rematch with him and having no luck whatsoever in getting Ali back in the ring.
