Brian Vera: I’ll rough Golovkin up; I’ll fight him

vera2By Allan Fox: WBO NABO middleweight champion Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) answered in the affirmative when asked if he’d like to fight WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) next after Vera’s 10th round TKO win over former WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-2-1, 24 KO’s) last night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York, USA.

“I’ll fight Gennady Golovkin and I’ll rough him up a little bit…I would love to have that fight,” the 31-year-old Vera said to Bleacherreport.com.

Before last night’s fight, Vera said that he wants to fight Golovkin on March 30th, which is Golovkin’s next tentatively scheduled fight date. However, it’s now uncertain that Vera will be able to fight by that date even if Golovkin chose to give him the fight.

Sergio Martinez vs. Gennady Golovkin won’t be happening, says Martinez’s promoter

golovkin1By Dan Ambrose: Lou Dibella, the promoter for WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), doesn’t see any upside in him putting the soon to be 38-year-old Martinez in with the hard hitting unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) in a unification fight.

Dibella said this about the idea of having him match Martinez against Golvokin to espn.go.com “No way. Golovkin doesn’t draw a dime! [Miguel] Cotto and [Manny] Pacquiao would never get asked about this.”

As Dan Rafael pointed out earlier today, Dibella didn’t feel this way when he was trying to get Martinez a fight with the more popular former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last year in September. He didn’t mind the fact that his fighter Martinez was the lesser known guy and the one that wasn’t a big seller in the United States.

Quillin sees Golovkin as low priority opponent for him right now

golovin1By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (28-0, 20 KO’s) sees WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) as just another one of the normal middleweight champions, and he doesn’t rank him as a high priority in terms of the fighters that he wants to take on.

Quillin says he prefers facing IBF champ Daniel Geale and WBC champ Sergio Martinez before he faces someone like Golovkin, according to fighthype.com. Quillin says he does want to fight Golovkin at some point but only after he’s made a name for himself by getting a few more fights under his before he faces him.

What’s really interesting is that Quillin sees himself as a well-known fighter in the United States, at least more so than Golovkin. Quillin believes his name has already been established despite the fact that he’s still pretty much an undercard fighter and not a main event guys.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Brian Vera = A good stay busy fight for Gennady

golovkin10By Dan Ambrose: After watching WBO NABO middleweight champion Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) slaughter the aging Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-2-1, 24 KO’s) in Verona, New York, I think the 31-year-old Vera would be a good opponent for one of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s stay busy fights later on this year. Vera wouldn’t have much of a chance of winning the fight because the skill and power difference between him and Golovkin would be way too far apart. Golovkin is a much better fighter than Vera.

Golovkin reportedly wants to get back in the ring by March or possibly April to keep busy so that he continue to improve and make a name for himself in the United States. A fight between Vera and Golovkin would be an interesting fight while it lasts.

Is Sergio ducking Gennady Golovkin?

martinez2By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez has shown no interest in moving up to the super middleweight division nor has he shown any interest in unifying is own division. However, he is interested in fighting welter weight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. The part that baffles me is fight fans claim that if Floyd doesn’t take the fight that he’s ducking. A few points before I move on.

Floyd is a welterweight and he stretches himself when he does fight at junior middleweight. For his fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto, he only tipped the scale at 150 pounds. Sergio is a middleweight who claims he get down to 154 pounds and even 150 pounds to make the fight happen. 154 is a stretch and 150 is impossible. Moreover, he’s a MIDDLEWEIGHT. He is naturally bigger than Floyd and would be a super middle weight on fight night. How about fighting WBA champ Gennady Golovkin?

Rosado: I proved I’m on the elite level now with the Golovkin fight

rosado9By Dan Ambrose Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) thinks his performance in losing a 7th round knockout to WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovin (25-0, 22 KO’s) last weekend proved that he’s an elite fighter. Rosado believes he won a lot of new fans by staying in there until the 7th when he fight was halted by his corner. Rosado says he’s going to move back down to 154 where he hopes he can get fights against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo based on his performance against Golovkin.

Rosado told ringtv “I gave fans a good fight and I believe I do have more fans after Saturday night…Fans will want to see me again. I stood up against the toughest guy at 160…The Golovkin fight puts me on that elite level.”

Gennady Golovkin vs. Sergio Martinez: Is this Fight Worth Making?

golovkin222By Ryan Wardle: On January 19 current WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) took the ring for his second U.S. televised bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden. He made his sixth title defense against Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s). Golovkin’s popularity is quickly rising in the U.S. and last Saturday he put his skills on display. Over the course of the fight Rosado was fluidly dismantled by Golovkin as he made his way to a seventh round TKO victory.

During the second round he opened a cut over the left eye of Rosado and continued to target the area for the duration on the fight, this eventually led to Rosado’s demise as he could no longer see punches and ultimately caused his corner to call the fight.

Golovkin is known to have exceptionally heavy hands, with 22 of his 25 fights ending by knockout.

Did Rosado ruin his chance of beating Golovkin by running?

rosado2By Allan Fox: Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) was in line for a title shot at 154, but instead he chose to move up in weight to fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) last Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. Rosado lost the fight to Golovkin by a 7th round stoppage. However, Rosado looked like he wasn’t really trying to win the fight.

Rosado opted to box/run for seven rounds instead of mixing it up with Golokvin, and the end result was Rosado getting slowly beaten down until his corner threw in the towel in the 7th. The question here is did Rosado ruin what little chance that he had by choosing the game plan to run instead of trying to fight? Rosado likely would have lost the fight anyway if he had chosen to fight, but he’s had stood a better chance of winning than by simply running.

Darren Barker wants Andy Lee in 2013; Golovkin also a possibility

barker2By Scott Gilfoid: Former EBU middleweight champion Darren Barker (24-1, 15 KO’s) is hoping to get a shot against Ireland’s Andy Lee (28-2, 20 KO’s) this year if possible. Barker says he’s willing to even travel to Ireland in order to fight the 28-year-old Lee.

Barker said to Sky Sports News “I’d go to Ireland to fight him [Lee]. Not a problem…I believe I’ve got his number. I’ve got the style to beat him…I’m sure he wants the fight as much as I do.”

It’s possible Lee may say yes to a fight with Barker. I mean, look at who Lee is fighting on February 9th.

Golovkin expected back in action in March or April

golovkin14By Allan Fox: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) will be fighting in March or April, according to Steve Kim. There still isn’t an opponent picked out for his next fight but his promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions has some possibilities he’s looking at. Golovkin’s next fight might not be televised on HBO due on account of them possibly not having an open date for him during those months.

Golovkin defeated Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) by a 7th round TKO last Saturday night in Madison Square Garden in New York. It was pretty much a one-sided fight considering Rosado chose to circle the ring for most of the fight rather than attempting to engage Golovkin.

Rosado was able to land some nice shots in the 5th round when he attempted to engage Golovkin for the first time in the fight in a sustained manner.
