Gennady Golovkin the best middleweight in the world?

golovkin5By John Kelvin: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has received a lot of hype and attention over the last 6 months based on his victories over Grzegorz Proksa and Gabriel Rosado. With these wins he has been called the best middleweight in the world by many people and has also been labeled the most avoided man in the sport.

Golovkin is a strong fighter with good power but he has done nothing to deserve being called the world’s best middleweight. He has defeated no name opponents or faced any credible contenders. He has been a champion for 2 years but has yet to face fellow champions Peter Quilllin, Daniel Geale, Dmitry Pirog and Sergio Martinez or even contenders like Andy Lee, Martin Murray, Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin.

Vera: I’d give Golovkin a lot of trouble

vera1By Dan Ambrose: #2 WBO, #6 WBC, Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the World Boxing Association, but he feels that he’d give WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) all kinds of trouble if he decided to fight him.

Golovkin probably won’t bother fighting Vera because he’s not ranked by the WBA, and he was badly beaten not too long ago by Andy Lee, someone that Golovkin would destroy without any problems.

Vera told Jenna Jay at doghouseboxing.com “I’d be the style that would give him trouble because he’s been fighting guys that run around, a lot of movers and I’d stay right in the pocket and I think it would be a great fight.”

Hearn doesn’t want Barker to fight Golovkin

barker232By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn doesn’t like the idea of his fighter middleweight contender Darren Barker (24-1, 15 KO’s) facing WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) for his title unless there’s absolutely no other options available for the 30-year-old Barker to fight for a world title in 2013.

Presently, Hearn believes there’s a chance for Barker to fight either IBF champion Daniel Geale or WBO champ Peter Quillin for their titles, so it won’t be necessary for Barker to fight Golovkin.

Hearn told thaboxingvoice.com “There’s no value in a fight against Golovkin. It’s not a huge fight…If that’s the only world championship fight presenting itself then we’ll take it.”

Is “GGG” ready for “Maravilla”?

golovkin22By Gibran Samad: WBA middleweight champion Gennaady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) first burst on the scene in America last year and made his HBO debut against Grzegorz Proska. He stalked and unleashed massive blows to Proska, knocking him down 5 times before finally defeating him by TKO in the 5th round.

Right after his win, people said things like “There’s a monster in the Middleweight Division! or “Sergio Maretinez better watch out!”. Last month GGG won by TKO against a game Gabriel Rosado and again the talks of Martinez came into play. But is Golovkin really ready for Martinez? GGG has never fought anyone as fast and slick as Martinez before. One thing GGG can do for sure is cut the ring off on Martinez and stalk his way through. But remember someone else that did the same thing against Martinez?

Mares’ move to featherweight a bad idea; Golovkin vs. Sturm an option?

mares34By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KO’s) has decided to move featherweight after being rejected for a unification bout against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire.

The 5’4 ½” Mares reportedly is having problems making the super bantamweight limit of 122 pounds, and that’s why he’s decided to move to 126 to go after the champions at that weight class.

Mares is making a big mistake in my view because he doesn’t have the power to mix it up with the top featherweights like Mikey Garcia, Jayson Velez and Daniel Ponce De Leon. Mares would be competitive against WBA champion Chris John and IBF champ Billy Dib.

Golovkin-Ishida official for March 30th in Monte Carlo

golovkin222By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) won’t be fighting on HBO for his next bout on March 30th against 37-year-old Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 KO’s) at the Chapiteau de Fontvielle, in Monte Carlos. With the fight not being televised on HBO, there’s not as much money to find a bigger name to fight the 30-year-old Golovkin, and there’s not as much pressure for Golovkin to fight anyone good.

Golovkin would be more than happy to fight a top quality fighter, but at this short notice it’s just not going to be possible to find anyone worthwhile.

Golovkin vs. Ishida is a good stay busy fight due to Ishida having good skills, and a lot of experience. He’s not a pushover despite his recent problems in his last two fights in losses to Paul Williams and Dmitriy Pirog.

Golovkin wants Quillin, Sturm or Geale in 2013

golovkin200By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) is hoping he can get one of the champions to face him this year, and he’s got several fighters on his list that he’d like to take on in the near future if they’re game.

Golovkin says he’d be interested in fighting former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm, IBF champ Daniel Geale or WBO champion Peter Quillin. Golovin is scheduled for a tune-up bout against Nobuhiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 KO’s) on March 30th, in Monaco, but after that Golovkin is free, and he’s be willing to fight Sturm, Geale or Quillin if they’re looking for a big fight.

Sturm: Gennady Golovkin hasn’t proven himself

golovkin201By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-3-2, 16 KO’s) thinks WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) is still a fighter that hasn’t really shown whether he’s as good as what some boxing fans think he is. Sturm isn’t sure himself and he thinks he’s got a lot to prove before he’ll consider him a good fighter.

Sturm said to RingTV “He [Golovkin] hasn’t proved himself and backed up his talk and especially his management talk…there was never a real offer from his side for a fight against me, it’s just talk. He has to prove himself and get known before a fight would make sense, both financially and from a boxing perspective.”

Gennady Golovkin vs. Nobuhiro Ishida possible for March 30th in Monte Carlo

ishida4543By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) is reportedly set to be back in the ring on March 30th against 37-year-old Nobohiro Ishida (24-8-2, 9 KO’s) in Monte Carlo, according to Steve Kim. This is little more than a stay busy fight for Golovkin to keep in shape while he waits for some bigger fights to open up for him.

Ishida would have been considered a good fight for Golovkin had this fight taken place two years ago following Ishida’s 1st round knockout win over a rusty and flabby James Kirkland in 2011. However, Ishida’s career luck has gone sour for him with him losing his last two fights to Paul Williams and WBO middleweight champion Dmitriy Pirog in lopsided 12 round decision defeats.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Osumanu Adama possible for March 30th

golovkin2By Allan Fox: According to fightnews.com, unbeaten WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) could be fighting #6 IBF Osumanu Adama (20-3, 15 KO’s) next on March 30th in France. This would likely be a fight that won’t be shown on HBO unless they’re willing to deal with the time difference between France and the United States.

Adama, 32, has good power and nice technical boxing skills. He has a 9th round TKO win over Roman Karmazin from October 2011. In his last fight, Adama was beaten by IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale by a 12 round unanimous decision last year in March.
