Golovkin v Murray makes sense

murray66By B.G.B: Based on last weekends action, the question on every boxing fan’s mind right now is where does Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) go after his demolition job of tough middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s)? Throughout the 3 rounds of the bout, Golovkin demonstrated frightful power along with patience, poise, accuracy and a solid defense.

As the hype grows, the opponents improve (or so they should), and although fans around the world would dream of seeing ‘GGG’ face the likes of Martinez, Alvarez, Froch and Ward  next, those fights are not likely to materialize any time soon. One fight I would like to see that has a very realistic possibility of being made is ‘GGG’ v Martin Murray (27-25, 11 KO’s). Here’s why:

Sergio Martinez won’t be fighting until 2014, says Dibella

martinez1By Allan Fox: If you were hoping to see WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO’s) step up to the plate and face the dangerous IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) in a unification match this year you can forget it because Sergio’s promoter Lou Dibella is saying that he’ll be out of action the remainder of the 2013 healing from his injuries sustained in his hard-fought 12 round unanimous decision win over Martin Murray last April in Argentina.

Martinez will hopefully be fighting in early 2014, but not against Golovkin.

Dibella said to fightnews “Right now, his [Sergio] concentration is on healing and rehabilitation and he will not fight until sometime in the first half of 2014.”

Golovkin’s camp interested in Chavez Jr. bout

chavez423By Hayesa: After this past weekends destruction of Matthew Macklin, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) is now looking to quickly advance his way through the middleweight division. It took just 3 rounds for Golovkin to put a stop to his encounter with the New York based fighter, something that took Sergio Martinez 12 rounds to do.

All the talk is now surrounding the power puncher and where his Boxing journey takes him next, but we could soon have the answer as his promoter Tom Loeffler has hinted at now targeting the Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1, 32 KO’s). Loeffler confirms that they will be looking to get another two fights in for Golovkin before the year is out.

Money is the issue, not skill for GGG

golovknin00001By Sotoman: On Saturday June 29th, WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin made truly easy work of Mathew Macklin.  For true boxing fans, the results were predetermined.  I am not sure they though it would end in such style, but GGG did in 3 rounds what Sergio Martinez struggled to do in 11 rounds.  Andre Ward made little to no mention about fighting GGG yet, and I highly doubt it will be soon.

Individuals all over the world continue to suggest that GGG has not proven himself to get a big fight.  Well he has! and with and amateur pedigree which extends well beyond Wards, some just need not to comment:  Wards Amateur record: Ward started boxing in 1994 and had a record of 115–5, GGG finished his amateur career with an outstanding record of 345-5. Riddle me that!

If Sergio won’t fight Golovkin, why should Floyd?

golovkin888By Robert Elmore: Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella may be up to something. He might know something that only his inner circles know about a possible Sergio Martinez/Gennady Golovkin fight. He might understand that letting a fight of this magnitude simmer just a little longer before unleashing the phrase, the fight is on.

Then again, he might be stalling, buying time, while he moves in the background to avoid Golovkin while securing a cash out fight for his fighter Sergio Martinez. DiBella has stated numerous times that Gennady or Triple G does not bring in anything financially. Lou has point. Golovkin’s purse against Matthew Macklin was 350,000 dollars. He is certainly carving out space in the middleweight division. He’s a good fighter. He might be too good for his own good.

Next steps for Golovkin

golovkin45by Bob Smith: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) is fresh from a very impressive win over the brave but overmatched Matthew Macklin, but the question remains: where to go from here? Golovkin systematically dismantled, overwhelmed, and in the end dominated one of the best middleweights in the world in Matthew Macklin.

Macklin is a peer of both Martinez and Felix Sturm and performed impressively against both of them. But against Golovkin he looked like an amateur.

However, don’t take my word for it – far more important words come from Matthew Macklin, and his promoter Lou Dibella said to ESPN: “I heard that shot, It sounded like something cracked. That was the hardest body shot possibly I’ve ever seen.”

Golovkin’s promoter wants him back in August; targeting Chavez Jr.

golovkin56By Allan Fox: Tom Loeffler, the promoter for IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s), plans on having Golovkin fight twice more this year with his next fight being in August.

Loeffler is hoping that he can get a fight between Golovkin and former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Unfortunately the chances of Chavez Jr. or his promoter Bob Arum saying yes to that fight are probably not very good.

Loeffler said to ESPN “We are on track for five times. I think the ideal fight would be Chavez Jr., but that’s who we want…any of the champions or big names. A performance like this, though, might make people who didn’t want to fight him before really not want to fight him.”

Gennady Golovkin v Sergio Martinez fight a long ways off

martinez45By Dan Ambrose: Sergio Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella wasn’t talking about wanting to put his fighter in with IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennedy Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) after watching Golovkin dismantle another one of his fighters Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) last Saturday night in Connecticut.

Dibella said this to ESPN about the idea of Sergio Martinez facing Golovkin: “It makes no sense.”

That was about all he would say, but you can read between the lines what Dibella is saying here. He has an aging fighter in Sergio Martinez, who has suffered knee and hand injuries in his last two fights, and who may not fight until next year because he’s still recovering from his injuries in his last fight against Martin Murray.

Hearn: Golovkin vs. Froch woud be epic at 168

golovkin453By Scott Gilfoid: It seems that Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s), may be getting some ideas about a possible fight between the 6’1” Froch and the 5’10” IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) after watching Golovkin make short work of Britain’s Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) last night in blasting him to smithereens in 3rd rounds at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Hearn said this on his twitter after watching the talented Golovkin smash up Macklin: “GGG is a beast. Golovkin v @Carl Froch at 168 would be epic @HBOBoxing.”

You notice how Hearn included HBO with the tweet. It looks like Hearn is trying to plant some seeds in the minds of the top executives at HBO about trying to make this fight happen. I think it would be a good one, but not for Froch though.

Peter Quillin: Me and Golovkin will be a PPV headliner

golovkin343By Dan Ambrose: WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin (29-0, 21 KO’s) says he and IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) will wind up on pay per view with them fighting it out in a unification bout.

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is interested in the Golovkin-Quillin fight and he sees it taking place on HBO if Quillin accepts the fight.

Quillin said on his twitter “Me and @GGGboxing [Golovkin] will be a PPV headliner. Trust and believe coming for that other belt until I get em all.”

I think Quillin is dreaming if he thinks a fight against Golovkin would be a PPV bout.
